A system, method, and computer program product is provided to select at least one channel based on one or more channel characteristics and initiate a first transmission to a first multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO)-capable portable wireless device, and further initiate a second transmission to a second multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO)-capable portable wireless device, such that at least a portion of the first transmission occurs simultaneously with at least a portion of the second transmission and both occur via a first wireless protocol; and is further configured to initiate a third transmission to a third multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO)-capable portable wireless device via a second wireless protocol including a 802.11n protocol, where the first wireless protocol includes another 802.11 protocol other than the 802.11n protocol.

Methods and apparatus for overlapping MIMO physical sectors

A system is provided comprising: a first wireless part with a multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) capability; a second wireless part with a multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) capability; and circuitry in communication with the first wireless part with the multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) capability and the second wireless part with the multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) capability. The system is configured such that the first wireless part with the multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) capability selects a channel based on one or more channel characteristics and initiates a first transmission to a first multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO)-capable portable wireless device via the first wireless protocol, and further initiates a second transmission to a second multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO)-capable portable wireless device.

A system is provided comprising: a first wireless cell transmission point with a multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) capability; a second wireless cell transmission point with a MIMO capability; and third circuitry in communication with first circuitry of the first wireless cell transmission point and second circuitry of the second wireless cell transmission point. The system is configured such that the first wireless cell transmission point cooperates with the second wireless cell transmission point in connection with a first transmission to a first MIMO-capable portable wireless device, for improving the first transmission. The system is further configured for: receiving first information from the first MIMO-capable portable wireless device; receiving second information from the first MIMO-capable portable wireless device; altering at least one aspect of the first transmission; and transmitting data in connection with the first transmission to the first MIMO-capable portable wireless device.

A apparatus is provided comprising a multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO)-capable portable wireless device including: a plurality of mobile device directional antennas, at least one mobile device radio in communication with the mobile device directional antennas, and mobile device circuitry in communication with the at least one mobile device radio. The multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO)-capable portable wireless device is operable for: measuring a first interference in connection with a first transmission point with a multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) capability of a single wireless cell configured to operate in a packet-switched cellular network; measuring a second interference in connection with a second transmission point with a multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) capability of the single wireless cell; reporting first information that is a function of the first interference; reporting second information that is a function of the second interference; and receiving data in connection with the first transmission.

A system for communicating with wireless devices. The systems includes radio groups whose MIMO physical sectors overlap. The MIMO physical sectors communicate using different channels. The MIMO physical sectors overlap to form an area of overlap. Each radio group includes directional antennas and radios. Radios are selectively coupled to the antennas. The antennas that are oriented so that the physical sectors of the antennas overlap to operate as MIMO antennas and form the MIMO physical sector for the radio group. The antennas operate as a MIMO antenna.

A system is provided comprising a single wireless cell configured to operate in a packet-switched cellular network, the single wireless cell including: a first transmission point with a multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) capability; a second transmission point with a MIMO capability; and third circuitry in communication with first circuitry of the first transmission point and second circuitry of the second transmission point. Methods and apparatus for overlapping MIMO  physical sectors

A method is provided comprising: providing access to a single wireless cell configured to operate in a packet-switched cellular network, the single wireless cell including: a first transmission point with a multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) capability; and a second transmission point with a MIMO capability; cooperating with a MIMO-capable portable wireless device; receiving first information from the first MIMO-capable portable wireless device that is based on the measurement of the first interference; receiving second information from the first MIMO-capable portable wireless device that is based on the measurement of the second interference; altering at least one aspect of a first transmission; and transmitting data during the first transmission to the first MIMO-capable portable wireless device, utilizing at least one of: the multiple first directional antennas of the first transmission point with the MIMO capability, or the multiple second directional antennas of the second transmission point with the MIMO capability.

MIMO systems communicate with wireless devices. MIMO systems include directional antennas that are oriented so that the physical sectors of the antennas overlap to form areas of overlap. The areas of overlap are oriented in unique directions. Radios are selectively coupled to the portion of the antennas to communicate with the wireless devices. The physical sectors of the antennas that are selectively coupled to the radios overlap. The radios use the antennas to communicate with the wireless devices. The antennas operate as a MIMO antenna.
