A piston for a hydraulic unit of a cam phaser, wherein the piston is configured cylindrical and wherein the piston is received axially movable in a cam phaser opening of the cam phaser, wherein according to a positioning of the piston a plurality of connections, in particular operating connections of the cam phaser are opened and closed, wherein the piston includes an outer contour that is configured for opening or closing the connections wherein the outer contour is configured complementary to an inner contour of the cam phaser opening in order to provide opening and/or closing of the connections. A cam phaser for an internal combustion engine, the cam phaser including a stator including vane cells; a rotor configured rotatable relative to the stator and including vanes arranged in the vane cells of the stator, wherein the vanes respectively divide the vane cells into advance chambers and retard chambers; a control valve configured to move the rotor at least between an advance position and a retard position, wherein the control valve includes a hollow piston that is axially movable within a piston channel, a pressure medium connection, a tank connection and at least four operating connections including at least one advance connection and at least one retard connection, wherein each of the vane cells includes an advance chamber that is connected to the control valve through the at least one advance connection and a retard chamber connected to the control valve through the at least one retard connection.

Cam phaser and operating method

A cam phaser including a rotation phaser and a hydraulic valve hydraulically loading the rotation phaser, wherein the hydraulic valve is connectable torque proof with a cam shaft so that the cam shaft is rotatable, wherein the rotation phaser includes a stator and a rotor configured coaxial with the stator, wherein the rotor is rotatable relative to the stator, wherein the hydraulic valve is configured so that it protrudes at least partially into the rotation phaser, wherein an adapter is provided for a relative axial positioning of the rotor and the stator. According to the invention the adapter is configured for loose mounting in the rotation phaser so that a fixated connection of the adapter in the rotation phaser is provided when the cam shaft is mounted at the hydraulic valve.

A system for mounting a cam phaser at a cam shaft of an internal combustion engine, the system including the cam phaser including a stator and a rotor that is rotatable relative to the stator; a control valve configured to adjust a phase angle of the cam shaft, wherein the control valve is configured to control a position of the rotor of the cam phaser by letting fluid flow into the cam phaser or letting fluid flow out of the cam phaser; and an assembly tool that includes at least one support device that is insertable into at least one corresponding support opening of the rotor so that a force is transferable between the rotor and the assembly tool.

A valve timing control device, in effect a cam phaser, for an internal combustion engine. The valve timing control device includes a rotor connected to a camshaft and having a plurality of vanes. A stator is engaged with the rotor, and includes a plurality of webs. Pressure chambers are provided between each of the webs and vanes. The cam phaser is configured to automatically locate to its mid-lock position, without having to rely on electronic control. At least one embodiment of the present invention is configured to use cam torque to recirculate oil from one side of the vanes of the rotor to the other.

In a hydraulic valve comprising a spool, one or more band-shape check valves and an enclosing bolt or snout, the check valve may be compressed to the point of excessive wear or failure and may impede spool movement. The problem outlined is solved by an inventive hydraulic valve for use with a cam phasing apparatus of an internal combustion engine. The hydraulic valve comprises a hollow bolt or snout, check valves, and a spool disposed inside the bolt while still being able to shift axially within the bolt. The bolt and spool are configured to provide fluid passageways between the spool and the cam phasing apparatus depending on a translational displacement of the spool. Furthermore, the spool is configured to allow an oil flow through the fluid passageway, yet limit a compression of the band-type check valves.

A valve timing control device for an internal combustion engine. The valve timing control device includes a rotor connected to a camshaft and having a plurality of vanes. A stator is engaged with the rotor, and includes a plurality of webs. Pressure chambers are provided between each of the webs and vanes. A centering slot is provided on the stator and/or the rotor. A pressure medium control valve is disposed in one of the vanes of the rotor, and is configured to not only selectively lock and unlock the position of the rotor relative to the stator, but is also configured such that pressure medium in the pressure chambers is ventable through the centering slot and thereafter through the pressure medium control valve.

A pressure medium control valve is disposed in one of the vanes of the rotor, and is configured to not only selectively lock and unlock the position of the rotor relative to the stator, but is also configured such that pressure medium in the pressure chambers is veritable through the centering slot and thereafter through the pressure medium control valve.
