Methods and systems are provided for controlling coolant flow through parallel branches of a coolant circuit including an AC condenser and a charge air cooler. Flow is apportioned through each of an air-conditioning condenser, a charge air cooler (CAC), and a transmission oil cooler (TOC) of the coolant circuit to maintain an estimated transmission oil temperature (TOT) below a threshold. The TOT is estimated from a torque converter slip ratio.

Methods and systems for control of coolant flow through an engine coolant system

Methods and systems are provided for controlling coolant flow through parallel branches of a coolant circuit including an AC condenser and a charge air cooler. Flow is apportioned responsive to an AC head pressure and a CAC temperature to reduce parasitic losses and improve fuel economy. The flow is apportioned via adjustments to a coolant pump output and a proportioning valve.

Methods and systems for coolant system

Methods are provided for engine coolant system diagnostics. In one example, engine coolant system malfunction is indicated based on an engine coolant temperature inference model, whereas in another example engine coolant system malfunction is indicated based on a time-based monitor, where the inference model is enabled at ambient temperatures above a predetermined threshold, and where the time-based monitor is enabled at ambient temperatures below the predetermined threshold. In this way, accurate engine coolant system diagnosis may be accomplished under ambient temperature conditions wherein the engine coolant temperature inference model may be compromised.

One example method includes varying oil injection by an oil injector onto a piston of an engine to accommodate different operating conditions. For example, by adjusting oil injection, suitable cooling effects can be provided without providing additional oil that increases the amount of oil deposits in the engine. In this way, the risk of pre-ignition can be reduced.

Methods and systems are provided for diagnosing an intake air temperature sensor in a hybrid electric vehicle. An engine temperature is compared to each of an intake air temperature sensed before an engine start but after sufficient engine soak, as well as an intake air temperature sensed after selected vehicle operating conditions have elapsed since the engine start. Based on discrepancies between the air temperature and the engine temperature, degradation of the sensor is determined.

Methods and systems are provided for diagnosing each of a plurality of engine cooling system components including various valves and grill shutters. Each valve may be individually closed and opened for a specified duration, and corresponding changes in coolant temperature may be monitored. If all the components are functional, the various valves may be adjusted to stagnate coolant at the engine and expedite engine warm-up during a cold-start.

Embodiments for indicating degradation of a piston-cooling jet system are provided. In one example, an engine method comprises indicating degradation of a piston-cooling jet system in response to a relationship between engine speed and oil pressure at maximum oil pump displacement conditions. In this way, engine operation may be adjusted in response to an indicated degradation.

A system and method for demonstrating or testing operation of on-board diagnostics in a vehicle include imitating performance degradation of a vehicle hardware component and/or associated vehicle system by dynamically modifying at least one control system parameter value associated with the hardware component in response to a request to demonstrate operation of a selected diagnostic function or a specified performance degradation. Embodiments modify at least one control system parameter value associated with the input/output signal of a sensor/actuator to imitate a specified performance degradation. The diagnostics independently monitor operation of various vehicle control systems and operate to detect the degraded performance without knowledge of, or distinguishing between, whether the performance degradation was caused by an actual hardware component, or by the requested modification to the control system parameter value(s) associated with a particular hardware component.

System and method for demonstrating functionality of on-board diagnostics for vehicles

A computer-implemented software development system is provided for constructing applications that are embedded in a microcontroller of a motor vehicle. The development system includes a data dictionary which stores data type information for a plurality of vehicle parameters and is able to generate a parameter definition file having data type information for each vehicle parameter associated with a first application. A calibration repository is used to generate a calibratable file for the first application, where the calibratable file includes calibratable vehicle information and controller executable instructions for the first application. The parameter definition file and the calibratable file are then used by a calibration tool to calibrate the first application in relation to a particular motor vehicle.
