A corrosion-inhibiting composition for application to a metal substrate, such as aluminum or steel, and in connection with a paint, and the synthesis of the composition. The active inhibitor constituent of the composition can be selected from the group consisting of 2,5-dimercapto-1,3,4 thiadiazole (DMTD), 2,4-dimercapto-s-triazolo-[4,3-b]-1,3-4-thiadiazole, trithiocyanuric acid (TMT), and derivatives of DMTD and TMT, including various N&#x2014; or S&#x2014; and N, N&#x2014;, S&#x2014; and N&#x2014;,S-substituted derivatives of DMTD, including salts of DMTD of the general formula: M(DMTD), where n=1,2 or 3, and M is a metal cation and preferably M=Zn(II), Bi(III), Co(II), Ni(II), Cd(II), Pb(II), Ag(I), Sb(III), Cu(II), Li(I), Ca(II), Sr(II), Mg(II), La(III), Ce(III), Pr(III), Al(III) or Zr(IV). DMTD, TMT, and their derivatives may also be combined with phosphates, molybdates, borates, silicates, tungstates, phosphotungstates, phosphomolybdates, cyanamides, carbonates, SiOand mixtures thereof.

Corrosion inhibitor composition applicable for aluminum and steel protection and procedure

A pigment grade corrosion inhibitor and a method of applying the inhibitor is disclosed. The inhibitor is comprised of a host species comprised of an inorganic compound having a layered structure and a guest species comprised an anionic species of a weak acid. The host species is preferably a double hydroxide having a structure of: [M(II)M(III)(OH)] [A.y HO], where M(II) is a divalent metal cationic species, M(III) is a trivalent metal cationic species, and Ais an anionic species, preferably with the species present in a range of: 0.2&#x2266;M(III)/(M(II)+M(III))&#x2266;0.4. The guest species include: various phosphoric acids and derivatives thereof; boric acid; cyanamidic acid; nitrous acid; derivatives of thio- and dithiocarbonic acid; thio-organic compounds functionalized with at least one &#x2014;SH group of acidic character, including: 2,5-dimercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazole (DMTD), 2,4-dimercapto-s-triazolo-[4,3-b]-1,3-4 thiadiazole, trithiocyanuric acid (TMT), and dithiocyanuric acid.

Pigment grade corrosion inhibitor host-guest compositions and procedure

A pigment grade corrosion inhibitor and a method of applying the inhibitor is disclosed. The inhibitor is comprised of a host species comprised of an inorganic compound having a layered structure and a guest species comprised an anionic species of a weak acid. The guest species include: various phosphoric acids and derivatives thereof; various molybdic acids and derivatives; boric acid; cyanamidic acid; nitrous acid; derivatives of thio- and dithiocarbonic acid; thio-organic compounds functionalized with at least one &#x2014;SH group of acidic character, including: 2,5-dimercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazole (DMTD), 2,4-dimercapto-s-triazolo-[4,3-b]-1,3-4 thiadiazole, trithiocyanuric acid (TMT), and dithiocyanuric acid, and various derivatives thereof.

An organic-inorganic hybrid composite which comprises an inorganic component and an organic conducting component. The inorganic component inhibits deprotonation of the organic conducting component when the composite is exposed to a medium having a pH which would deprotonate the organic conducting component but for the presence of the inorganic component.

A process for producing a strontium chromate corrosion inhibitor includes the steps of providing an aqueous slurry containing dispersed particulate strontium chromate, adding to the slurry a phosphoric acid or a neutral or acidic soluble salt of a phosphoric acid selected from the group consisting of ortho-phosphoric, pyro-phosphoric, tri-phosphoric, polyphosphoric, metaphosphoric, polymetaphosphoric, cyclic tri-metaphosphoric acid, and phosphorous acid, and, filtering and drying the resultant material whereby particulate strontium chromate of reduced solubility is produced.

Hybrid pigment grade corrosion inhibitor compositions and procedures

A tannin stain inhibiting latex paint composition for application to wood based on an alkaline latex suspension of a polymer in water is provided with a tannin-stain inhibiting additive. The additive includes effective amount for stain inhibition of a non-acidic compound selected from ammonium zirconium carbonate, sodium zirconium carbonate or potassium zirconium carbonate.

A corrosion inhibiting composition for application to a metal substrate such as steel, copper or aluminum includes a film forming organic coating composition and an inorganic pigment which displays synergistic corrosion inhibitive properties. The preferred composition of the corrosion inhibitor pigment includes cation selected from Zn, Al, Mg, Ca, Sr, and ion that a combination of ions including cyanamides, phosphates or phosphites, silicates, carbonates and zinc oxide.

Synergistic pigment grade corrosion inhibitor compositions and procedures

A process of treating wood to reduce the tannin staining of coatings subsequently applied includes the steps of providing a solution of a zirconyl compound in a carrier liquid such as water, applying the solution to a wood surface, and, drying the solution. The pore structure of the wood is modified or sealed so that staining of coating compositions applied subsequently over the surface is reduced. The process is particularly beneficial in cases where the coating composition a clear or a light-colored latex paint, especially white. The preferred zirconyl compound is zirconyl acetate. The treating solution may be modified by addition thereto of a lanthanide compound, especially cerium, to provide UV light protection to a substrate and further by one or more metal cations to impart mildewicidal activity to the composition.

A process of inhibiting of the staining of a film forming finish applied to a tannin containing wood substrate includes the step of applying to the wood substrate prior to or concurrently with the film forming finish, a protective coating containing an effective amount of zinc cyanamide to inhibit the migration of tannins from the substrate into the finish.

A method of preparing a (Me)bis-hydrogen cyanamide composition with enhanced corrosion preventive activity, wherein Me is a divalent metal selected from the group consisting of nickel and cobalt or mixtures thereof. Improved corrosion preventive pigment grade zinc cyanamide suitable for protective coatings is prepared by providing a hydrated slurry of finely divided, dispersed basic zinc carbonate, mixing with said slurry a stabilized soluble aqueous solution of hydrogen cyanamide to form zinc cyanamide having a crystalline structure characterized by the presence of an intense IR absorption spectral band at 2200 cm.sup.-1 and the substantial absence of component bands at 2050 cm.sup.-1 and 700 cm.sup.-1.

Improved corrosion preventive pigment grade zinc cyanamide suitable for protective mirror backing coating is prepared by reacting a totally hydrated zinc oxide slurry with hydrogen cyanamide. The reaction is carried out while maintaining a stoichiometric excess of zinc oxide at an elevated temperature between about 75.degree. C. and about 85.degree. C. The reaction mixture is provided in a condition free of inorganic soluble salts and free of anions containing sulfur such as sulfides or sulfates.
