An integrated network receiver includes a first universal resource identifier for a first channel and an input suitable for receiving a first input video content from the Internet based upon the first universal resource identifier. The integrated network receiver provides the first input video content for the first channel to a head end connected to a plurality of customer devices through a transmission network. The integrated network receiver updating the first universal resource identifier based upon data obtained from a video address server.

System to monitor and manage integrated receiver decoders

A multi-rate statistical multiplexing system is configured to determine whether a subscriber-line is in a congested-state. The subscriber-line provides one or more channels requested by a subscriber. The system selects a version among different versions of each requested channel based on the level of congestion and an indicator of perceived quality of viewing experience of each requested channel. The system switches to the selected version of each channel and the perceived quality of viewing experience is maintained after switching.

Multi-rate statistical multiplexing

In one embodiment, a method for encoding content includes receiving source content and encoding the source content into a plurality of content streams. The encoding includes aligning the plurality of content streams at Group of Pictures (GOP) boundaries. The encoding further includes embedding, in each content stream, metadata identifying segmentation points within the content stream, where the segmentation points correspond to one or more of the GOP boundaries.

Encoder-aided segmentation for adaptive streaming

A video coding system includes a decoder configured to decode an encoded reference picture, a primary memory, and a secondary memory configured to store the decoded reference picture. The video coding system also includes a logic device configured to extract motion vectors for generating a predicted picture of the reference picture and to store the extracted motion vectors in memory bins. The reference picture includes a plurality of predefined regions and each memory bin stores motion vectors for a particular region of the plurality of predefined regions. For each of the plurality of predefined regions of the reference picture, the logic device is configured to use the memory bin corresponding to a reference region to read the reference region from the secondary memory and write the reference region into the primary memory. The written reference region and the motion vectors of the corresponding memory bin are used to spatially translate the written reference region into the predicted picture.

Motion compensation in video coding

A current pixel of a video image is adaptively filtered to provide stronger filtering when there is a high likelihood that noise is present. Weaker filtering is provided when the presence of a color and/or brightness edge is likely in the video image. Each pixel has luminance and chrominance amplitude values. In a filtering method, a current pixel is intermediate to first and second pixels in the video frame. Difference signals are determined based on the amplitude difference between the current pixel and first and second adjacent pixels. A plurality of available filters provide successively stronger filtering of the current pixel amplitude. One of the filters is selected for filtering the current pixel according to the difference signals. Secondary difference signals which indicate the amplitude difference between the current pixel and pixels which are adjacent to the first and second pixels are also considered in the selection process. The selection process may further be biased by a user-selectable control word. The scheme may also provide temporal filtering with successive video frames or images. Filtering with pixel interpolation may also be used.
