A sealing system for an acoustic touchscreen includes an elongate gel body between the touchscreen and the bezel of a housing onto which the touchscreen is mounted. The elongate gel body forms a seal around the perimeter of the touch-sensitive area of the touchscreen. A stop element controls and limits the amount of compression of the elongate gel body. The resulting seal is highly effective in protecting the unexposed parts of the touchscreen (i.e., areas other than the touch-sensitive area) from contaminants, especially liquid contaminants, at the cost of an acceptably low loss in acoustic signal strength.

A method and apparatus for continuously monitoring and measuring the concentration of gases in a gas-containing liquid such as a transformer oil. The method and apparatus employ a passive gas extraction technique which comprises a high performance membrane material to extract dissolved gases from the oil, and an IR-based sensor to detect gases present. The passive gas extractor extracts dissolved gas from the gas-containing liquid, there being a known relationship between the concentration of a constituent gas in the extracted gas and the concentration of the constituent gas remaining dissolved in the gas-containing liquid. The gas sensor senses the concentration of a constituent gas in the extracted gas, in the presence of other constituent gases. The gas sensor comprises a sample chamber which receives the extracted gas, a non-dispersive infrared (IR) absorption sensing system which generates an electrical signal corresponding to the light absorption, at one or more specified IR wavelengths, of the extracted gas in the chamber, and an electrical output comprising the electrical signal generated by the non-dispersive IR absorption sensing system. A processor having receives the electrical signal corresponding to the light absorption, at the one or more specified IR wavelengths, of the extracted gas in the chamber, and computes the concentration of at least one gas constituent present in the extracted gas.

A surge arrester (1) includes varistor elements (2) forming a stack (3) and having opposed end surfaces (4a, 4b). The varistor stack is electrically connected via the opposed end surfaces to end terminals (7a, 7b) having circumferential ridges (32a, 32b), which, in the event of failure of the varistor elements, are designed to relocate the resulting arc and direct it in a manner which reduces or minimizes damage to the surge arrester. The ridges serve as damage-tolerant sacrificial rooting points for an arc in the event of varistor element failure by presenting a substantial metal mass for the arc to erode away.

The invention provides for a modularized terminal block (100) and an improved method of manufacturing the modular block. The block permits the connection of a plurality of drop wires (550) or other devices (600, 700, 800) in a reversible manner through the use of a standardized plug in module (16) configuration. The module can be optimized for a given drop wire range which then uniformly connects to the base block (10) through a standardized demateable contact (15). The base block (10) electrical contacts (15) are encased in a sealant material (13) such as gel. The mateable plug-in module connectors enclose an electrical contact (24) also surrounded by such sealant (13). Upon mating of the contacts (15, 24), the sealant material (13) is maintained under compression.

A surge arrester has end terminals having circumferential ridges, which, in the event of failure of varistor elements of the surge arrester, are designed to relocate the resulting arc and direct it in a manner which reduces or minimizes damage to the surge arrester. An apparatus (10) and a method are described for extracting gas from a liquid containing dissolved gas. The liquid is pumped from an external reservoir (40) of the liquid into a separation cell (14) by a liquid-pumping chamber (11). In separation cell (14) a permselective membrane (17) effects extraction of the dissolved gas from the liquid. A gas-pumping chamber (23) pumps the extracted gas from the permeate chamber (16) of the separation cell (14) to a collection station (27), where the extracted gas can be analyzed, separated into its individual components, or stored, as desired.

A surge arrester has a single varistor element or a stack of varistor elements held between two end terminals by a plurality of elongate strength members disposed therearound. The ends of the strength members are inserted into recesses in the end terminals. Crimping of the end terminals distorts the recesses sufficiently to hold the strength members firmly therewithin, but without shearing and crushing (or otherwise damaging) the strength members.

A terminator cap and system for using the terminator cap is provided for protecting a standard coaxial cable port from atmospheric conditions and from unwarranted tampering. The cap is a hollow cylinder with one enclosed end. The terminator cap is dimensioned to slip over one end of a connection jack connector, the other end of which has a plurality of attachment fingers dimensioned to fit over the connection jack. The swagging shell is used to firmly hold the terminator cap to the connection jack connector and firmly hold the flared fingers of the connection jack connector to the connection jack. A locking shroud is attached to the connection jack such that the locking shroud surrounds the connection jack, the connection jack connector, the terminator cap and the swagging shell.

A feedthrough coaxial cable connector includes a tubular mandrel body dimensioned to be pressed between a foil-bonded dielectric core and other elements of an outer conductor of the prepared end of the cable. The body has cable engagement surface which defines a knife edge projection therearound for engaging an outer conductor of the cable by creating shear stresses therein without actually shearing the outer conductor. A tubular shank portion extends from the cable engagement surface portion to a radial wall portion, and a jack engagement portion is coaxial about the exposed central conductor. The jack engagement portion achieves a tight friction fit upon a jack and may be formed as an inside compression collet. A radial compression providing structure causes an inside surface region of the outer conductor to bear directly against and bend over the knife edge portion. Preferably, a slideable shell is slideably positionable generally away from a connector end facing the outer surface of the jack to enable the jack engagement portion of the connector to slide over the outer surface of the jack, and slideably positionable toward the connector end so as to radially compress the radially diverging jack engagement portion against the outer surface of the jack to secure the connector thereto. A kit of parts including an expendable installation tool enables proper assembly of the cable connector without special skills or tools.

A surge arrester for protecting power distribution equipment from overvoltages has a varistor as the active surge-arresting element. In the event of a persistent overvoltage, an amorphous conductor electrically in series with the varistor heats up to or above a critical temperature at which its tensile strength substantially decreases. The amorphous metal conductor breaks, triggering a series of events including the closing of a switch creating a permanent short to ground, operating the network overcurrent protection to de-energize the arrester and associated protected equipment, and protecting the electrical network equipment from insulation damage and/or failure because of a sustained or permanent power frequency overvoltage condition.

A method and a device is provided which allows the connection of coaxial cable termini to one another with minimum long-term loss of RFI shielding. The method comprises the removal of metal oxides from the concentric conductor portions of the two cable termini, applying a sealant to the concentric conductor termini and then connecting the central conductor termini to one another and the concentric conductor termini to one another. The device comprises a collet structure dimensioned to slip over the outside of a standard connection jack. Within the collet structure is disposed a quantity of sealant and the collet structure has at least one aperture through which sealant oozes from the collet structure to the exterior of the collet structure. When the collet structure is attached to the jack, the sealant is caused to ooze onto the concentric conductor thereby sealing the concentric conductor from the ambient.

A switching device for electrically activating and deactivating a coaxial cable junction between a coaxial cable terminus and a connection jack, where both the terminus and connection jack have external and internal conductors, is disclosed. The switching device comprises an electrically conductive housing having a first end adapted to be physically connected to the external terminus conductor, and a second end adapted to be physically connected to the external connection jack conductor. An interior member disposed within the housing, has a first end adapted to be electrically connected to the internal terminus conductor, and a second end adapted to be electrically connected to the internal connection jack conductor. A first electrically conductive path lies between the first and second end of the interior member, and a switch is disposed within this conductive path. The switch is capable of being alternated between (i) a first position wherein high frequency electrical signals are substantially transmittable between the terminus and connection jack, and (ii) a second position wherein high frequency electrical signals are substantially not transmittable between the terminus and connection jack.

A device is provided for firmly attaching a plurality of coaxial cable terminus to a plurality of standard connection jacks in such a way that each connection point is effectively shielded from tampering by individuals and is effectively sealed from degrading elements in the atmosphere. The device is a locking shroud which defines a plurality of locking shroud chambers, each being adapted to attach to a respective connection jack so as to surround the connection of a cable terminus to the jack. Each locking shroud chamber is attached to one other locking shroud chamber by a flexible web disposed in a curved plane. Because of the flexible webs, the locking shroud can be easily adjusted to fit any standard coaxial cable multiple connection equipment. The use of the locking shroud of the invention makes it difficult to de-attach and/or re-attach the cable terminus to the jack without special tooling. The use of the locking shroud further makes it difficult to break off the locking shroud by twisting the shroud, such as with a pair of pliers. The device can be used to make coaxial cable connections secure from tampering and atmospheric degradation. It is simple and inexpensive to install and maintain. Furthermore, the system can be retrofitted into existing coaxial cable equipment, using standard coaxial cable connection jacks.

A system is provided for firmly attaching a coaxial cable terminus to a standard connection jack in such a way that the connection point is effectively shielded from tampering by individuals and is effectively sealed from degrading elements in the atmosphere. The system includes a jack attachment member having a collet structure, a swagging shell which slips over the collet structure to accomplish a firm connection with the jack and a locking shroud which surrounds the swagging cylinder so as to make it difficult to de-attach and/or re-attach the cable terminus to the jack without special tooling. Such special tooling, however, is simple and inexpensive for authorized service technicians, thereby making the system at once relatively secure from tampering and atmospheric degradation and simple and inexpensive to install and maintain. Furthermore, the system can be retrofitted into existing coaxial cable equipment, using standard coaxial cable connection jacks.
