The invention relates to integrated electrode separators (IES), and their use in lithium ion batteries as replacements for free standing separators. The IES results from coating an electrode with a fluoropolymer aqueous-based emulsion or suspension, and drying the coating to produce a tough, porous separator layer on the electrodes. The aqueous fluoropolymer coating may optionally contain dispersed inorganic particles and other additives to improve electrode performance such as higher ionic conduction or higher temperature use. The IES provides several advantages, including a thinner, more uniform separator layer, and the elimination of a separate battery component (separator membrane) for a simpler and cost-saving manufacturing process. The aqueous separator coating can be used in combination with a solvent cast electrode as well as an aqueous cast electrode either in two separate process steps, or in a one-step process.

Integrated electrode separator assemblies for lithium ion batteries

The invention relates to a novel film, membrane or powder media made from fluoropolymers, especially PVDF-based and ETFE-based polymers, which are suitable for separating gases, especially carbon dioxide, from a gas mixture. The novel film has good selectivity, high permeance, good mechanical properties, and exhibits a high resistance to oxidant and acid attack. The separation film is especially useful in harsh and corrosive environments.

Fluoropolymer gas separation films

Nonfluorinated surfactants selected from C7&#x2013;C20 linear 1-alkanesulfonates, 2-alkanesulfones, and 1,2-alkanedisulfones are particularly effective for stabilizing emulsions in preparing non-elastomeric fluoropolymers containing at least 71 wt % vinylidene fluoride and having at least a 2% crystalline polyvinylidene fluoride content. Processes for making such fluoropolymers using these surfactants, particularly in combination with one or both of a nonionic polymerization initiator and the use of mechanical coagulation to isolate the product, are also provided, as are fluoropolymers made thereby.

Method of producing thermoplastic fluoropolymers using alkyl sulfonate surfactants

Compositions comprising acid salts of amine-functionalized styrene-maleic anhydride resins are disclosed. The salts can be dissolved in organic solvents, UV/EB polymerizable monomers and/or oligomers, and/or water and act as a polymeric surfactants to disperse pigments or fillers, emulsifying agents, or hard resin additives in a variety of formulations. The compositions react under UV/EB cure conditions, and provide enhanced properties such as cure speed, hardness and adhesion to polymer compositions.

Acid salts of amine-functionalized SMA imide resins

Compositions comprising (A) non-branched polybutadiene having terminal hydroxyl functionality less than 2 per molecule by average; and (B) branched polybutadiene having terminal hydroxyl functionality more than 2 per molecule by average; the weight ratio of (A) to (B) being about 99:1 to 1:99. These compositions are reacted with organic polyisocyanates to form prepolymers which are cured by reaction with a chain extender such as a diol to produce cured resins which exhibit unexpectedly improved tear strength properties and themoplasticity with high modulus, and improved tackiness and shelf life for hot melt adhesives. The prepolymers have lower viscosity and better storage stability as compared with those from conventional branched polybutadienes of the (B) type. Alternatively, the compositions can be cured directly in a one-shot reaction with diisocyanates to form a polyurethane with the described combination of properties. In addition, the compositions of (A) and (B) can be reacted to form polybutadienes with carboxyl, amine or epoxy-terminal functionality with are useful components of formulations.

Hydroxyl-terminated polybutadienes and their use in curing formulations

Improved amine-terminated polybutadienes (ATPBs) having one or two terminal groups of the formula &#x2014;CHRNHwherein R is C-Calkyl, are prepared by aminating a secondary hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene having no ether groups. The ATPBs may be hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated, either prior to or after the animation, to saturate or partially saturate the polymers. Preferred ATPBs are of the formula HNCHR-(polybutadiene)-CHRNHwherein R is C-Calkyl. Polyureas, polyurethanes, crosslinked epoxies, polyamides, and other derivatives with improved properties can be prepared from the ATPBs. The resultant derivatives are useful in liquid binders for braking systems, electric potting compositions, coatings, adhesives, sealants, and water proofing membranes, for example.

Amino-terminated polybutadienes

Improved amine-terminated polybutadienes (ATPBs) having one or two terminal amino groups, are prepared by cyanoalkylating a hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene by Michael addition of acrylonitrile in the presence of a base, forming nitrile termination, followed by hydrogenation in the presence of a Group VIII metal as catalyst. The ATPBs may be hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated, either prior to or after the amination, to saturate or partially saturate the polymers. Polyureas, polyurethanes, crosslinked epoxies, polyamides, and other derivatives with improved properties can be prepared from the ATPBs. The resultant derivatives are useful in liquid binders for braking systems, electric potting compositions, coatings, adhesives, sealants, and water proofing membranes, for example.
