A method of producing a welded assembly comprising two members and wherein the assembly is adapted subsequently to have an element connected thereto in a manner that imparts a connection force to the welded connection between the two members and the method comprising the steps of, prior to welding the two members together, temporarily applying a force to at least one of the two members to simulate the force which is to be imparted to the welded connection between the two members as a result of the connection of the further element to the assembly, welding the two members together to form the assembly while maintaining the predetermined force on the at least one member and subsequently removing the predetermined force from the at least one member.

Method of producing a welded assembly

A manually adjustable wheel for a vehicle e.g. an agricultural tractor comprises a rim to receive a tire, the rim having at least one cylindrical portion; a plurality of channel-shaped lugs spaced apart around the radially inner surface of the cylindrical portion of the rim, the channel in each lug extending perpendicular to the rotary axis of the wheel and receiving a pair of circumferentially spaced apart bolts extending transversely across the channel and through the walls thereof, each lug having flanges extending circumferentially of the wheel rim and being attached by welding to the radially inner surface of the cylindrical portion of the rim; and a wheel disc for connection to a hub of the vehicle, the disc having substantially the shape of a square with the corners removed to provide an irregular generally octagonal shape having four longer sides and four shorter sides arranged alternately around the periphery of the octagon each shorter side being juxtaposed against a lug, the disc and lugs being arranged so that the disc may be selectively secured to the lugs by the bolts in either of two positions, the bolts being located along the shorter sides of the disc only and, at each of the shorter sides comprising the pair of bolts each passing through the disc and through a lug juxtaposed to the shorter side.

Laterally movable wheel rim

The spacer (2) is for use in spacing a disc from attachment portions of the rim of the wheel. The spacer comprises two spacing portions (4,6) and a rigid joining portion (22) retaining the spacing portions at a constant distance and orientation with respect to each other. The spacing portions (4,6) each have a bolt-receiving passage (24) and bearing surfaces (8,10) extending around the mouths of the passage. The bearing surfaces (8,10) of each spacing portion are in parallel planes which are the same planes for both spacing portions.
