A chain-belt for engagement with the pulleys of a continuously variable transmission consists of interleaved sets of chain links joined for articulation by a joint which has a rocking action. The joint includes a pair of pins. A small camber is introduced into one or both of the pins to create a spring load between the pins and the links to retain the pins in the chain during handling and assembly. Each chain link includes a pair of spaced apertures adjacent the opposite ends; each aperture has a generally hour-glass shape with the enlarged ends receiving the pins. Also, each chain link has a pair of oppositely disposed tabs adjacent one end with the location of the tabs on the links alternating on adjacent links of each set. In addition the outermost two links of each set of links had a width substantially less than the width of the inner links in that same set.

A chain-belt for engagement with the pulleys of a continuously variable transmission consists of interleaved sets of chain links joined for articulation by a joint which has a rocking action. Cambered pin CVT chain belt

A power transmission chain-belt as disclosed is especially adaptable to transmit power between the pulleys of a pulley transmission, the pulleys of which are each constructed of a pair of flanges. The chain-belt comprises a plurality of sets of interleaved links joined by pivot means, and a set of at least three generally V-shaped or trapezoidal load blocks located between each adjacent pair of pivot means. Each load block has a central opening permitting its assembly with the links, and edge surfaces to drivingly contact the pulley flanges. The central opening of the load blocks has a height greater than the height of the links, so as to define a space therebetween. Resilient means, such as a curved leaf spring, is positioned between each set of links in the space between the chain and the central opening of a set of load blocks to apply a force on the load blocks of each set. The load blocks of a set engage the pulley flanges at different times, both insuring a sharing of the load by all blocks of a set of blocks and also changing the usual pattern of impact noise due to the blocks successively engaging the pulley flanges.

Power transmission chain belt

The disclosed control system regulates changes of gear ratio in an automatic transmission for a vehicle. A supervisory control arrangement monitors operator input commands through the shift range selector lever, and receives a desired-ratio command either from a shift point computer or from a manual gear shift selector. When the supervisory control arrangement determines that the desired-ratio signal differs from the actual ratio, the monitoring function is interrupted and a shift-initiate command is provided. This command is utilized to assign certain components for use in a shift quality control arrangement, for effecting the controlled ratio change. A torque output signal from the vehicle drive line is used in conjunction with the shift quality control arrangement. After the shift is completed, the previously assigned components are released and the supervisory control arrangement resumes the monitoring of the desired ratio as contrasted to the actual gear ratio. One circuit controls all the upshifts, whether 1-2, 2-3, or 3-4, and one other circuit controls all the downshifts. This assignment of certain components for each controlled ratio change, and their release so they can be re-used in subsequent ratio changes, contributes to a cost-effective trade-off between the number of circuits required in the total system and the complexity of the logic circuits actually employed.

Transmission control system for multi-ratio gear arrangement

A planetary transmission mechanism comprising two simple planetary gear sets driven by the engine of a vehicle by an input clutch or torque converter and having four friction engaging devices and a one-way engaging device to establish four forward driving ratios and reverse through the transmission. A center output gear is mounted between the input clutch or torque converter and the planetary gear sets. The pair of friction engaging devices comprising clutches associated with the planetary gear set are mounted immediately adjacent the gear input elements which they connect.

Planetary transmission

A control system to change gear ratio in an automatic transmission through friction elements engaged by hydraulic pressure. A closed loop electrical circuit is completed between a transducer, which provides an electrical signal related to the output torque of the transmission, and a pair of control valves, to vary the pressure applied to a friction element by each control valve. A circuit for computing reaction torque is coupled between the transducer and a logic control circuit, which provides logic command signals for controlling operation of components in the closed loop circuit. The system computes an output torque ramp when a downshift is called for by the shift point computer and uses controllers which react oppositely to control engagement of a clutch and brake in response to error signals of torque output compared to a desired ramp to produce a proper shift.

Method and apparatus for transmission control system

A control system used to change the gear ratio in a gear set regulated by a signal from an electronic control unit is disclosed. A transducer provides an output torque signal which is compared to other signals for controlling the gear change. The ratio change is accomplished through a friction element engaged by hydraulic pressure. A unique diaphragm and solenoid control valve is used responsive to the electronic control unit to follow a shift control ramp to insure a smooth shift.

Variable displacement compressor

A speed-responsive engaging mechanism, adapted for use in a hydrodynamic device to couple the turbine and impeller members, including a disc secured to the turbine member having a series of cam surfaces formed in apertures in the periphery thereof with a series of engaging devices or friction shoes in said pockets. The friction shoes engage with the impeller member at a predetermined speed of rotation of the turbine element. The cam means will induce a wedging engagement of the shoes upon further increase of speed. A spring is carried by each shoe urging them toward a disengaged position and retaining the shoes in the apertures.

Fluid coupling with centrifugal and torque responsive lock up clutch

A method of manufacturing a hydraulic torque converter impeller member and the product of such manufacture in which a hardened steel cylindrical bearing is assembled to a drawn hub portion of a generally annular sheet metal part to comprise a torque converter impeller comprising the steps of (1) semidrawing the part to include a partly drawn hub portion, (2) placing a hardened cylindrical bearing in a die mechanism, (3) assembling the generally annular part into the die mechanism with the hub portion engaged in the cylindrical bearing (4) drawing and extruding the hub by moving an object the size of the desired finished inside diameter of the hub through same whereby the hub is formed and forced against the bearing member with sufficient force to make a permanent connection between the hub and bearing, and (5) trimming the excess material from the outer end of the hub portion to conform same to the dimensions of the cylindrical bearing.

A piston for a fluid actuator being formed of two annular sheet metal members having axially and radially extending portions whereby when said piston transmits force, a box-like sheet metal structure is formed.

Axially adjustable clutch pistons

A speed responsive engaging mechanism, adapted for use in a hydrodynamic device to couple the turbine and impeller members, including a series of ramps formed in the turbine member each defining a cam surface. A friction shoe is provided in each ramp in contact with a cam surface and wedgingly engageable with the impeller member at a predetermined speed of rotation of the turbine element.

Centrifugal lock up clutch for fluid couplings

A control system used to change the gear ratio in a gear set regulated by a change-gear signal from a control unit is disclosed. A transducer provides an output torque signal which is compared to other signals for initiating the gear change. In another arrangement, an automatic transmission changes a gear ratio when engine torque is transferred from one member to another member of a three member planetary gear set. This transfer is accomplished through friction elements engaged by hydraulic pressure. A closed loop electrical circuit is completed between a transducer, which provides an electrical signal related to the output torque of the transmission, and a control valve, to vary the control valve pressure. A circuit for computing reaction torque is coupled between the transducer and a logic control circuit, which provides logic command signals for controlling operation of components in the closed loop circuit. The closed loop circuit includes a pulse width modulation circuit for regulating the control valve operation, and a feed-forward circuit to minimize the delay in the control valve portion of the system.

Method and apparatus for a transmission control system

A lubricant valve for use in a control system for an automatic transmission including a shift valve adapted to change ratio in the transmission mechanism by exhausting a first friction device of pressure and engaging a second friction device with pressure. The lubricant valve is connected to the shift valve and to lubricant distributing ports in the device for conducting lubricating oil to the friction plates. The lubricant valve is connected to an exhaust conduit for the first friction device whereby when pressure is exhausted through the exhaust conduit, as initiated by the shift valve when the second friction device is to be engaged, the initial high value of pressure in the exhaust conduit acts on the lubricant valve to move same to a position to connect additional pressure momentarily to the lubricant distributing ports in the second friction device whereby temporarily a large flow of fluid is provided to said clutch plates to provide increased heat dissipation for same during engagement.
