A method for building a three-dimensional object in a layer-by-layer manner, the method comprising heating a build chamber of a digital manufacturing system, feeding a solid feedstock of a modeling material comprising an amorphous metallic alloy to a liquefier assembly of the digital manufacturing system, heating the modeling material of the solid feedstock in the liquefier assembly to an extrudable state, and depositing the heated modeling material within the heated build chamber in a predetermined pattern to form the three-dimensional object.

A debris herding method and apparatus is described comprising a low power air blower and a tilted rotary rake. The air blower acts together with a tilted rotary rake to dislodge and impel the debris. A motor driven chassis transports the blower and the rotary rake across the lawn. The blower and rotary rake can be energetically powered, such as by a solar cell array mounted to the chassis. The present invention is directed to an energetically efficient device for moving debris on a surface, such as leaves on a lawn.

An autonomous blower is described that utilizes GPS signals for blowing ground debris from a clearable area to a target area. A controller coordinates motors that propel and steer the autonomous blower. A database created in a teaching mode defines clearable, target, and no-trespassing areas with respect to GPS coordinates. An algorithm in the controller computes a serpentine trajectory for the autonomous blower so that it traverses the clearable area while transporting ground debris to the target area.

A pump system comprising a delivery assembly configured to feed a solid material under operational power of a first drive motor, and a screw pump comprising a housing that at least partially defines a barrel of the screw pump, an extrusion tip secured to the housing at a first end of the barrel, a liquefier secured to the housing and intersecting with the barrel, and an impeller extending at least partially through the barrel. The liquefier is configured to receive the solid material fed from the delivery assembly, to at least partially melt the received solid material, and to direct the at least partially melted material to the barrel, and the impeller is configured to drive the at least partially melted material that is directed to the barrel toward the extrusion tip under operational power of a second drive motor.

Disclosed is a modeling filament for use as feedstock in a fused deposition modeling liquifier, and a method for manufacturing the filament. The diameter and standard deviation of the filament are controlled to meet various tolerance requirements of jam resistance, slip resistance, model strength, liquifier overflow prevention and hysteresis-free transient response. Standard deviation of the filament diameter is matched to a filament target diameter. The resulting filament is used to form high-quality models.

High-precision modeling filament

A method and an apparatus for detecting relative changes in the surface energy of a test surface by adhering a tacky sampling surface to the test surface and removing the tacky sampling surface from the test surface while measuring the force and speed of removal. The measured force and speed of removal is used to compute a relative surface energy, which is compared to a standard value for that surface. This technique has utility for monitoring the cleanliness of surfaces in printing, adhesive and paint application, display and semiconductor fabrication, and generally test surfaces requiring cleanliness and which cannot readily be transported to or configured for an existing surface analysis technique.

A multi-tip extrusion method and apparatus for building a three-dimensional object deposits modeling materials from distinct supply sources, each in a layerwise predetermined pattern, from dispensers having co-planar dispensing tips. The tip spacing is controlled so that a road of material extruded by a leading one of the tips will cool and shrink from the plane of the tips before a trailing one of the tips passes over the road. In this manner, smearing of the road by a trailing one of the tips is avoided.

Disclosed is a multi-tip extrusion apparatus and design methodology whereby a single extrusion head having approximately co-planar, fixed-position dispensing tips is used in a three-dimensional modeling machine to deposit multiple types of materials from distinct material supply sources. The tips are spaced apart a distance great enough so that a road of material extruded by a leading one of the tips will cool and shrink from the plane of the tips so that it is not smeared by contact with a trailing one of the tips.

A method and an apparatus for detecting removable particulates initially on a test surface or surface to be inspected. The removable particles are transferred to a portion of a tacky surface on a carrier by adhering and then removing the portion of the tacky surface from the test surface. The carrier is received by a positioning means and passed through the field of view of a surface inspection means guided by a controller. Signals from the surface inspection means are combined with coordinates from the controller to produce particle coordinates, which indicate particulates initially on the test surface. Particle coordinates on the tacky surface measured before the tacky surface is adhered and removed from the test surface can be compared with particle coordinates measured after the tacky surface is adhered and removed from the test surface. Several test surfaces can be sequentially inspected using the same carrier by storing particle coordinates after each measurement and comparing the most recent measurement with the cumulative previous measurements. The tacky surface and the associated particle coordinates can be conveyed to other analytical instruments for subsequent analysis.

Surface cleaning and particle counting

An apparatus and method for controlling the extrusion of thermoplastic through one or more discharge orifices is described. An apparatus comprises one or more thermally conductive flow tubes defining flow channels in a heated thermally conductive body and terminating in discharge orifices. Each flow channel may be independently valved on and off, by selectively supplying a flow of coolant. An array of flow channels can be independently opened and closed in a predetermined pattern, so as to vary the extrudate configuration of thermoplastic emerging from the discharge orifices. By extruding thermoplastic layer-by-layer onto a base in this manner, a three-dimensional object may be formed.
