The systems and methods discussed herein related to digital to analog conversion. A digital to analog conversion a compensation circuit and a digital to analog conversion circuit. The compensation circuit includes a filter configured to provide roll off compensation in a baseband frequency using real coefficients. The compensation circuit is configured to convert the first digital signal to a second digital signal so that the second digital signal can be filtered by the filter using the real coefficients.

A mesoporous, nanocrystalline, metal oxide construct particularly suited for capacitive energy storage that has an architecture with short diffusion path lengths and large surface areas and a method for production are provided. Energy density is substantially increased without compromising the capacitive charge storage kinetics and electrode demonstrates long term cycling stability. Charge storage devices with electrodes using the construct can use three different charge storage mechanisms immersed in an electrolyte: (1) cations can be stored in a thin double layer at the electrode/electrolyte interface (non-faradaic mechanism); (2) cations can interact with the bulk of an electroactive material which then undergoes a redox reaction or phase change, as in conventional batteries (faradaic mechanism); or (3) cations can electrochemically adsorb onto the surface of a material through charge transfer processes (faradaic mechanism).

Mesoporous nanocrystalline film architecture for capacitive storage devices

A portable electronic device determines a battery available power for the device's battery and manages device power usage based upon the battery available power. The device includes a battery and a controller. The controller is configured to receive a first voltage value for the battery at a first time, a first current value for the battery, a second voltage value for the battery at a second time, and a second current value for the battery. It is determined that a time difference between the first time and the second time exceeds a predetermined time threshold. An estimated resistance of the battery is determined based at least on a first difference between the first current value and the second current value and a second difference between the first voltage value and the second voltage value. Real-time power usage of the device is controlled based on the estimated resistance of the battery.

Method for determining battery available power for an electronic device

An electrochemical cell is formed. The cell includes a non-lithium negative electrode in contact with a lithium ion permeable negative electrode current collector, and a positive electrode disposed in contact with a lithium ion permeable positive electrode current collector. The non-lithium negative electrode and the positive electrode are lithium ion permeable. The cell also has a lithium source electrode including lithium ions. A respective microporous polymer separator is disposed between the lithium source electrode and each of the negative and positive electrodes; or a first separator is disposed between the lithium source electrode and one of the negative and positive electrodes, and a second separator is disposed between the negative and positive electrodes. An electrolyte is introduced into the electrochemical cell. A voltage potential is applied across the electrochemical cell to pre-lithiate any of the non-lithium negative electrode and positive electrode with lithium ions from the lithium source electrode.

A system and method for operating a portable electronic device are presented. The device includes a battery and a controller. The controller is configured to execute instructions for determining a first resistance value for the battery during a first power cycle of the battery, and determining a second resistance value for the battery during a second power cycle of the battery. The second power cycle is after the first power cycle. The controller is configured to execute instructions for determining that a first difference equal to the first resistance value subtracted from the second resistance value is less than a first predetermined threshold value, and electrically isolating the battery. In an embodiment, the first resistance value and the second resistance values are determined at the same state of charge for the battery.

Method for operation of device using battery state of health

In some variations, a method of real-time monitoring of battery capacity comprises correlating electrode open-circuit voltage with electrode state of charge for a selected electrode; compiling a look-up table to correlate the electrode open-circuit voltage with the electrode capacity at different values of the active-material capacity; during real-time operation, identifying first and second times at which battery terminal voltages are approximated as battery open-circuit voltages; and calculating battery capacity based on the difference in battery open-circuit voltages at the first and second times, current integration, and the look-up table. No reference electrode is needed, and a complete battery charge/discharge is not necessary to determine the capacity. This technique can therefore be implemented on-board and in real time to provide reliable capacity estimation even as the battery ages. The methods are applicable to various metal-ion secondary battery systems, including lithium-ion batteries, with different material chemistries.

Methods for online estimation of battery capacity and state of health

Systems, methods, and computer-readable media are disclosed for improved battery performance. The systems, methods, and computer-readable media described herein may improve user experiences and prolong the battery's life. In an example method described herein, a battery may be placed within a clamp or housing that applies configurable pressure to the battery. In turn, the applied pressure may counter the swelling pressure of the battery and improve the battery's power output, reduce the internal resistance or impedance, and improve the life cycle of the battery.

Methods and systems for improved battery performance

Methods, systems, and apparatuses, including electrical circuitry, are described for auto-negotiation. Active cables, active backplanes, and line cards may include one or more instances of electrical circuitry and/or integrated circuits that intercept advertisements of standard auto-negotiation protocol signaling from an initiating device for establishment of communication links with a receiving device. Auto negotiation information in the intercepted signaling may be translated and encoded into signaling in accordance with the capabilities of the receiving device. Active cables and active backplanes may also include one or more connection components between instances of electrical circuitry and/or integrated circuits to provide high-speed transmission of data packets encapsulating the auto-negotiation information in a format that differs from the standard auto-negotiation protocol.

A thermomagnetic sensor includes a thermomagnetic probe that includes a ferromagnetic material having a temperature-dependent magnetic permeability characterized by a maximum magnetic permeability value at a temperature below a Curie temperature of the ferromagnetic material. The thermomagnetic sensor further includes an alternating magnetic field source to produce an alternating magnetic field in a vicinity of the thermomagnetic probe to facilitate a measurement of the temperature-dependent magnetic permeability as function of temperature remotely using a thermomagnetic effect. A predetermined relationship between the temperature-dependent magnetic permeability and temperature in a range between the maximum magnetic permeability value and the Curie temperature provides a measurement of a temperature local to the thermomagnetic probe. A battery-temperature measurement system includes the thermomagnetic probe in a battery, a magnetic field coil to apply the alternating magnetic field, and a magnetic permeability measurement apparatus to measure the temperature-dependent magnetic permeability.

Thermomagnetic temperature sensing

This invention provides metal-foam electrodes for batteries and fuel cells. In some variations, an electrode includes a first metal layer disposed on a second metal layer, wherein the first metal layer comprises an electrically conductive, open-cell metal foam with an average cell diameter of about 25 &#x3bc;m or less. The structure also includes smaller pores between the cells. The electrode forms a one piece monolithic structure and allows thicker electrodes than are possible with current electrode-fabrication techniques. These electrodes are formed from an all-fluidic plating solution. The disclosed structures increase energy density in batteries and power density in fuel cells.

Methods of fabricating metal-foam electrodes for batteries and fuel cells

The internal temperature of an electrochemical device may be probed without a thermocouple, infrared detector, or other auxiliary device to measure temperature. Some methods include exciting an electrochemical device with a driving profile; acquiring voltage and current data from the electrochemical device, in response to the driving profile; calculating an impulse response from the current and voltage data; calculating an impedance spectrum of the electrochemical device from the impulse response; calculating a state-of-charge of the electrochemical device; and then estimating internal temperature of the electrochemical device based on a temperature-impedance-state-of-charge relationship. The electrochemical device may be a battery, fuel cell, electrolytic cell, or capacitor, for example. The procedure is useful for on-line applications which benefit from real-time temperature sensing capabilities during operations. These methods may be readily implemented as part of a device management and safety system.

Methods and apparatus for sensing the internal temperature of an electrochemical device

The disclosed battery system comprises a three-electrode metal-ion battery configured with voltage meters connected between anode and cathode, between anode and a reference electrode, and between cathode and the reference electrode; a current source connecting the anode and cathode; and a programmable computer. The system is configured to control the current source to drive the battery with a current cycling profile, and to measure current signals between anode and cathode, and voltage signals derived from the voltage meters. An impulse response is then calculated for each of the anode and cathode, to dynamically estimate open-circuit potential and impedance of each of the anode and cathode. Battery aging, battery capacity fading, and other diagnostics are provided in real time. This invention can characterize each individual electrode of a battery, even when the battery is cycling away from equilibrium states, which is important for electric vehicles.
