An excavation cutting tool holder retention system. The cutting tool holder retention system includes a cutting tool holder having a holder side surface, a flange recess at least partially enclosed by the holder side surface, and a holder engagement surface together with a support block having a tool holder bore into which the cutting tool holder is inserted and a block pin bore intersecting the tool holder bore, the block pin bore defining a block engagement surface which is inclined downwardly relative to the tool holder bore. The cutting tool holder retention system further includes a pin having a pin shaft, the pin shaft having a pin flange which engages the flange recess so as to limit translational movement of the pin shaft. The pin engages the block engagement surface and the holder engagement surface such that the pin may be moved to draw the cutting tool holder into the tool holder bore.

Cutting tool holder retention system

An excavation cutting toolholder retention system. The cutting toolholder retention system includes a cutting toolholder having a flange recess and a holder engagement surface and a support block having a toolholder bore into which the cutting toolholder is inserted and a block pin bore intersecting the toolholder bore, the block pin bore defining a block engagement surface which is inclined downwardly relative to the toolholder bore. The cutting toolholder retention system further includes a pin having a pin shaft, the pin shaft having a pin flange which engages the flange recess so as to limit translational movement of the pin shaft. The pin engages the block engagement surface and the holder engagement surface such that the pin may be moved to draw the cutting toolholder into the toolholder bore.

Cutting toolholder retention system

A cartridge-type milling cutter is provided having a cartridge mounting mechanism that resists the centrifugal load applied to the cartridges at high rotational speeds. The milling cutter includes a generally cylindrical cutter body, at least one replaceable tool cartridge having a trailing face, and a leading face having a cutting insert for cutting a workpiece, and a mounting mechanism for detachably securing the tool cartridge onto the cutter body. The mounting mechanism includes a recess in the cutter body for receiving the cartridge that includes a radially canted wall for providing dovetail-type resistance to radial movement of the cartridge, and at least one compressively loaded set screw in the cutter body for compressively engaging the leading face of the cartridge in order to seat and retain it within the recess. During the operation of the cutter, the centrifugal load is substantially borne by the combination of the radially canted wall and the set screw. The mounting mechanism preferably also includes a screw, optionally radially-oriented, that passes through a through bore in the sides of the tool cartridge for providing additional insurance against the loosening or breaking away of the cartridge during high speed operation.

High-speed, cartridge-type milling cutter

A coupling device for high speed rotation applications comprised of a first member about a longitudinal axis having a collar integrally attached to a solid base and a second member about a longitudinal axis having a sleeve which is receivable within the collar. When the first and second members are rotated the sleeve expands within the collar to minimize or eliminate any clearance that may exist between the sleeve and collar. The coupling device may, among other applications, be utilized for machine tools such as milling cutters.
