A solid hydrocarbon-insoluble, alpha-olefin polymerization catalyst component with superior activity, stereospecificity and morphology characteristics, comprises the product formed by (a) complexing a magnesium alkyl composition with an organophosphoryl compound; (b) reacting the resulting stable complex with a compatible precipitation agent to form a solid component; and (c) reacting the resulting solid with a titanium (IV) compound and an electron donor compound in a suitable diluent.

A comminuted, supported polymerization catalyst for alpha-olefins comprises (A) an organoaluminum compound and (B) a solid titanium-containing component formed by at least one halogen-containing compound of titanium(IV); (b) at least one electron donor; and (c) at least one hydrocarbon-insoluble magnesium-containing compound; and (2) retreating such comminuted product with (a) at least one halogen-containing compound of titanium(IV); and (b) a mixture containing ethylbenzoate and a substituted alkyl aromatic acid ester in which the substituent group has a negative Hammett constant; and optionally, at least one chlorocarbon and/or at least one haloalkylchlorosilane.

Preferably, the product obtained from such materials is mechanically activated prior to polymerization use.

Catalyst for the stereospecific polymerization of alpha-olefins of 3 or more carbon atoms comprising an organoaluminum compound and a component prepared from halogen-containing compound of titanium(IV), organic electron donor, and a pretreatment product of components comprising magnesium alcoholate, Group II or IIIA metal alkyl, and optionally, one or more pretreatment modifiers such as a mineral acid or anhydride of sulfur, organometallic chalcogenide derivative of hydrogen sulfide, organic acid or organic acid ester. Preferably, the product obtained from such materials is contacted with liquid Lewis acid and mechanically activated prior to polymerization use.

Catalyst and process for polymerization of alpha-olefins

Partial esters of polyhydroxy compounds and combinations thereof with organophosphorus compounds have been found to be effective stabilizers for polyolefins made in processes wherein such polymers are not subjected to extensive removal of process produced impurities during or subsequent to the polymerization process. Combinations of polypropylene produced in a solventless polymerization process and such partial esters are particularly suitable and show substantially improved stability in the presence of additional stabilizing compounds.

Stabilizing additives for polyolefins

Lower alkyl, neutral phosphoryl esters are disclosed herein as effective materials to reduce deleterious chloro compound concentrations in polyolefins and compositions based thereon, which polyolefins and compositions are produced in bulk or vapor-phase processes using high yield catalysts in which catalyst residues and solubles need not be removed prior to processing.
