Activated olefinically unsaturated organic compounds such as esters, acids, ketones, nitriles, and the like, are reacted with hydrogen sulfide in the presence of at least one of magnesium oxide and anion exchange resins catalysts to produce saturated sulfur-containing compounds. Oxa-organic sulfur compounds, methods of preparing such compounds and methods of using the compounds as polymer chain length terminating agents are provided. The compounds are prepared by reacting allyl alcohol in the presence of a basic catalyst with a compound having the formula ##STR1## to form an intermediate. The intermediate is then reacted with hydrogen sulfide in the presence of ultraviolet radiation and a trialkyl phosphite to form the oxa-organic sulfur compound having the formula ##STR2##

Organothioalkanols are prepared by reacting a mercaptan with an aldehyde or ketone. Reaction impurities, such as water, are removed to enhance product stability.

Interchange reactions between organosulfides and mercaptans are promoted by the use of catalysts containing Group VIB oxides. The preferred catalysts are supported phospho Group VIB oxide acids, such as phosphotungstic acid and phosphomolybdic acid. The preferred supports are moderately acidic supports that contain aluminum, such as zinc aluminate and aluminum phosphate.

An improved process is provided for reacting starting materials in the presence of an acid catalyst in a reaction zone to produce an acid sensitive product. The starting materials are circulated in the reaction zone through a fixed bed of solid acid-type ion exchange resin to thereby catalyze the reaction, and the resulting reaction product is withdrawn from the reaction zone. Starting materials comprised a mercaptan and an aldehyde or ketone are reacted in accordance with the process to produce high yields of aliphatic hydroxyalkyl or hydroxyaryl sulfide.

Catalyst composition

A method for the conversion of mercaptoalkanols to dithiodiglycols having good color properties and low residual odor is provided. Mercaptalkanols are reacted in the presence of small amounts of anhydrous ammonia and an oxygen-containing gas in the absence of any metal-containing catalysts to produce the desired dithiodiglycol products.
