An engine assembly includes a vapor canister in selective fluid communication with a crankcase to store alcohol vapor when the temperature inside the crankcase causes alcohol accumulated in the crankcase to boil. The vapor canister is in selective fluid communication with an air induction system to recirculate the alcohol vapor through the engine in a metered fashion.

Crankcase vapor management system

Preignition in an engine is prevented by identifying engine conditions that relate to autoignition. If one or more of the engine conditions exceed a threshold, a controller retards the spark in the engine. The controller detects whether autoignition occurs in the engine due to the retarded spark advance. If autoignition is detected, the controller corrects the one or more engine conditions by at least one of reducing a throttle opening, cutting of fuel to a cylinder, adjusting a camshaft phase, and storing a diagnostic code.

Method of preventing preignition for an internal combustion engine

A supercharged internal combustion engine is provided with charge pressure control means, such as a turbocharger wastegate valve, to control engine charging pressure and a control system for actuating the charge pressure control means to vary charge pressure as a function of the deviation of the location of peak pressure in the engine cylinder relative to a desired value in order to control engine combustion rate and thereby the peak pressure location.
