In accordance with various embodiments of the disclosed subject matter, a system, device and method for an electrically tunable wavelength selection filter comprising a wavelength selection filter portion having a plurality of alternating thin films of two dielectric materials with a thin film capacitor displacing one pair of alternating thin films, and an order sorting filter portion electrically isolated from but proximate the wavelength selection filter and having a plurality of alternating thin films of two dielectric materials where one of the dielectric materials exhibits a voltage-dependent refractive index. Independently controlling the capacitor charging voltage and the voltage across the order sorting filter enables selective transmission of narrow spectral lines across a desired frequency region.

Multi-order, tunable Fabry-Perot etalon filter with wavelength down-selector

An antenna array is provided including a substrate, a metal ground plane proximate the substrate, and a dielectric layer proximate the metal ground plane. A first plurality of antenna elements including polaronic organic transducer elements is proximate the dielectric layer and connected in series. A second plurality of antenna elements including polaronic organic transducer elements is proximate the dielectric layer and also connected in series. The first and second plurality of antenna elements are electrically isolated. The antenna elements of the first plurality of antenna elements are configured to detect a first wavelength, while the antenna elements of the second plurality of antenna elements are configured to detect a second wavelength, different from the first wavelength.

Integrated infrared optical antenna and polaronic organic transducer sensor

A method and apparatus are present for steering a radio frequency beam. The radio frequency beam is emitted from an array of antenna elements at a first angle into a lens at a location for the lens. The first angle of the radio frequency beam is changed to a second angle when the radio frequency beam exits the lens. The second angle changes when the location at which the radio frequency beam enters the lens changes. The second angle of the radio frequency beam is changed to a third angle when the radio frequency beam with the second angle passes through a negative index metamaterial lens located over the lens.

Steering radio frequency beams using negative index metamaterial lenses

An automated computer controlled electrical materials characterization system in which a material sample is subjected to focused near field polarization controlled microwave electrical energy radiation. Response of the material sample to either of reflected or transmitted/refracted microwave radiation is determined by a microwave energy sensor disposable in a range of physical locations with respect to the sample. Automated and unattended operation of the characterization system by way of disclosed computer software is provided. Computer positioned, lens equipped, microwave antenna horn elements provide source and reception functions for the sample received and discharged microwave radiation. Output signal polarization response from the sample examination is especially considered. The disclosed system is especially suited to characterization of 'negative index' electrical materials and has utility with a variety of other materials.

Near field free space anisotropic materials characterization

An antenna radiation collimator structure is provided as including a number of resonator circuit boards oriented to form a block structure. A sheet of dielectric material is disposed between each of the number of resonator circuit boards to maintain a substantially uniform spacing between each of the resonator circuit boards. A plurality of conductive unit resonator cells may be disposed on first planar surfaces of each of the number of resonator circuit boards and a plurality of conductive strip lines may also be disposed on second planar surfaces of each of the number of resonator circuit boards. In this arrangement, radiation applied to a substantially central location of the block structure interacts with the plurality of conductive unit resonator cells and the plurality of conductive strip lines for redirecting the radiation out of front and rear facing surfaces of the block structure as respective first and second substantially collimated beams.

Antenna radiation collimator structure

A reconfigurable photoconducting antenna is created on a semiconductor substrate. At equilibrium, the semiconductor is semi-insulating, and therefore appears as a dielectric. Illuminating a region of the substrate results in the generation of free carriers in the substrate and allows the creation of a conductive region (semi-metallic) in the substrate. This conductive region functions as the radiating element of the antenna. Controlling the pattern of the illuminated region directly controls the pattern of the radiating antenna. By using a digital micromirror device (DMD&trade;) to control the pattern of the light, a desired antenna design may be placed on the semiconductor substrate. The pattern can be dynamically adjusted simply by changing the position of the individual mirrors in the DMD&trade; array. The device operates through a standardized digital interface and can be switched between patterns in a period of approximately 20 microseconds. The pattern of the DMD&trade; can therefore be readily and easily controlled through the use of a digital control system.
