A composition for absorbing oxygen and releasing carbon dioxide in a high moisture environment including by weight an iron-based component for absorbing oxygen in an amount of between about 15% and 60%, a carbon dioxide releasing component for releasing carbon dioxide in an amount of between about 8% and 50%, an acidifying component for providing acid for activating the carbon dioxide releasing component, and a dry water-attracting component for preventing premature activation of the iron-based component and carbon dioxide releasing component and for attracting water from a high moisture environment to thereby supply water for activating the acidifying component and the iron-based component. A method of absorbing oxygen and releasing carbon dioxide in a container having a product and a high moisture environment and wherein oxygen was flushed out and replaced by at least 26% carbon dioxide and the remaining atmosphere in the container having 17% or less oxygen content after the flushing and into which additional oxygen may have entered including the steps of providing a container, placing a product into the container, flushing the container with a gas containing carbon dioxide, and inserting into the container a packet containing the above described composition.

An oxygen-absorbing label consisting of a base sheet, adhesive on the base sheet for securing the base sheet to an internal surface of a container, an oxygen-absorbing composition on the base sheet, and a cover sheet secured to the base sheet to confine the oxygen-absorbing composition therebetween, the cover sheet being fabricated of material which will permit oxygen to pass therethrough but will not stain due to the oxidation of the oxygen-absorbing composition or due to contact with materials in the container. A plurality of the foregoing labels are mounted on a web to be used with conventional labeling equipment.

Oxygen-absorbing label

An oxygen-absorbing label and a moisture-sensitive label. The oxygen-absorbing label consists of a base sheet, adhesive on the base sheet for securing the base sheet to an internal surface of a container, an oxygen-absorbing composition on the base sheet, and a permeable cover sheet secured to the base sheet to confine the oxygen-absorbing composition therebetween. The moisture-sensitive label is one wherein a moisture-sensitive material is used as part of the label instead of the oxygen-absorbing composition. The moisture-sensitive material may be a moisture adsorber such as silica gel or molecular sieve, or it may be a moisture supplier such as hydrogel. A plurality of the foregoing labels are mounted on a web to be used with conventional labeling equipment.

Moisture-sensitive label

An absorbent packet for absorbing carbon dioxide at a rapid rate from a closed container, such as a package or can containing coffee and water vapor, including a porous envelope containing calcium oxide and a hydrating agent, such as silica gel with water adsorbed therein. The water vapor from the container permeates the envelope at a relatively rapid rate because of the affinity of silica gel for the water vapor in the container, and the silica gel becomes supersaturated and gives off water. The carbon dioxide from the environment also permeates the envelope because of its concentration outside of the envelope and because of the pressure gradient between the outside and inside of the envelope. The water given off by the supersaturated silica gel combines with the calcium oxide in the envelope to form calcium hydroxide. The carbon dioxide and the calcium hydroxide react to produce calcium carbonate and water. Any other suitable metal oxide may be used, including but not limited to the oxides of sodium, potassium, magnesium and barium. Also other hydrating agents may be used instead of silica gel.

Carbon dioxide absorbent packet and process

An oxygen-absorbing composition for absorbing oxygen from an enclosure, such as a package, containing a low-moisture product having an equilibrium relative humidity, or water activity, of between 30% and 90% including in relatively sufficient proportions for absorbing oxygen in the container, particles of iron, particles of a solid electrolyte material, and particles of hydrogel.

A method of attaching a membrane across an opening of an annular deformable wall including the steps of placing a disc across the opening with the disc extending outwardly beyond the wall, and deforming the outer edge of the disc and the wall simultaneously by applying heat and pressure thereto to fuse the outer edge of the disc onto the wall.

Method of fabrication of a container for bulk material

A closet drier including a container having an upper portion and a lower portion divided by a normally stretched elastic diaphragm having perforations therein and retaining deliquescent material in the upper portion of the container, a membrane at the top of the container for permitting only water-vapor, but not liquid water, to pass therethrough into the deliquescent material which forms a solution with the deliquescent material which passes through the perforations into the lower portion of the container, the elastic diaphragm contracting as the deliquescent material is consumed so that the space previously occupied by the deliquescent material can be occupied by the resulting solution, and the perforations in the elastic diaphragm also contracting as the elastic diaphragm contracts to reduce the ability of liquid from underneath the diaphragm in the container from passing therethrough.

Closet drier

A combined controlled rate adsorbent and disc drive stabilizing unit in the shape of a computer disc including an adsorbent of planar shape, a casing of porous material having a predetermined water vapor transmission rate encasing the adsorbent for prolonging the water vapor adsorption time of the adsorbent, and a self-sustaining jacket on the casing of a shape for installation into a computer disc drive during transit.

Controlled rate adsorbent and disc drive stabilizing unit

An adsorbent packet including a casing of permeable material, adsorbent in the casing, and a sleeve of metal foil fused to a central portion of the casing by ultrasonic welding and having a layer of nylon on the outside thereof. A method of fabricating an adsorbent packet including the steps of superimposing a first sheet of permeable material over a first sheet of metal foil, superimposing a second sheet of metal foil over a second sheet of permeable material, forming the first sheets into a pocket with the metal foil on the outer surface of the central portion thereof, filling the pocket with adsorbent, superimposing the second sheet of permeable material and the second sheet of metal foil over the pocket with the second sheet of metal foil on the outside thereof and in line with the first sheet of metal foil, sealing edge portions of all of the first and second sheets to form a casing containing adsorbent with a metal foil sleeve on the outside thereof and with a seam extending copmletely around the casing, and trimming the flash off of the material outside of the seam.

Method of fabricating an adsorbent packet with integral heat shield

A floatable oxygen-absorbing cartridge for placement into a container of liquid having an air space above the liquid level including a casing, a weighted base on the casing for causing the cartridge to float in an upright position with its upper portion above the level of the liquid, an oxygen-absorbing composition within the casing, and a permeable membrane on the upper portion of the casing exposed to the air space for permitting oxygen to pass therethrough to be absorbed by the oxygen-absorbing composition while preventing the passage of the liquid into the casing.

Floatable oxygen-absorbing cartridge

A packet for effecting a compound treatment of gaseous material by desiccation and/or absorption and/or adsorption including a permeable envelope of carbon-loaded sheet material for effecting a first treatment of gaseous material which comes into contact with it, and bulk material in the envelope for effecting a second treatment of the gaseous material which enters the envelope. An envelope fabricated of carbon-loaded paper for receiving a foreign body and adsorbing gases which may deleteriously affect it.

An adsorbent packet including a casing of permeable material, adsorbent in the casing, and a sleeve of metal foil fused to a central portion of the casing by ultrasonic welding and having a layer of nylon on the outside thereof. A method of fabricating an adsorbent packet including the steps of superimposing a first sheet of permeable material over a first sheet of metal foil, superimposing a second sheet of metal foil over a second sheet of permeable material, forming the first sheets into a pocket with the metal foil on the outer surface of the central portion thereof, filling the pocket with adsorbent, superimposing the second sheet of permeable material and the second sheet of metal foil over the pocket with the second sheet of metal foil on the outside thereof and in line with the first sheet of metal foil, sealing edge portions of all of the first and second sheets to form a casing containing adsorbent with a metal foil sleeve on the outside thereof and with a seam extending completely around the casing, and triming the flash off of the material outside of the seam.

Adsorbent packet with integral heat shield and method of fabrication

A controlled rate adsorbent unit including an adsorbent and a heat-shrunk casing of porous material having a predetermined water vapor transmission rate encasing the adsorbent for prolonging the water vapor adsorption time of the adsorbent. The controlled rate adsorbent unit may be in the shape of a recording disc or it may be in the shape of a three-dimensional solid with the heat-shrunk casing stretched tightly thereover. A method of fabricating a controlled rate adsorbent unit including the steps of providing an adsorbent material, heating the adsorbent material to dry off moisture therefrom, providing a porous material having a controlled water vapor transmission rate, sealing the adsorbent material in a casing of the porous material, heat-shrinking the porous material about the adsorbent, and storing the sealed adsorbent material in a moisture barrier package.
