A digital cellular radio communication system having a remote repeater is provided. The communication system includes a central communication site which: transmits and receives signals in a first radio channel assigned according to a cellular communication system channel reuse plan, transmits signals to and receives signals from a cellular communication network unit, and digitally processes received signals for subsequent transmission in the first radio channel or to the cellular communication network unit. The communication system further includes a remote communication site, substantially remotely located from the central communication site, which: receives a signal in either the first radio channel or a second radio channel assigned according to the cellular communication system channel reuse plan, channel shifts the received signal between the first and the second radio channels, and transmits the shifted signal in the other of the first and the second radio channels.

A wireless communication system (200, 300, 400, 500) mitigates the effects of excess timing delay caused by varying lengths of communication paths. In one general implementation, a transition communication path (206, 323, 329) is used to transfer a time-advanced version of a timing reference signal so that the cumulative time delay at a transition cell (209, 325, 331) is reduced. In another general implementation, the timing reference signal is time-advanced in all communication paths (403-411), and selected communication paths (403-407) include a time delay means (423-427, 503-507) such that the cumulative time delay at an area (421) near a target coverage area (130) is reduced. By reducing the cumulative time delay at the area (421) near the target coverage area (130), a handoff of a communication of a mobile station (128) into the target coverage area (130) can be performed.

The dual mode communication network comprises a first communication system having a frame structure and a first traffic channel protocol and a second communication system having the frame structure and a second traffic channel protocol. There is provided a mechanism for providing data services over a wireless cellular network. It comprises: establishing communications over the cellular network; upon a subscriber designating that it has a data communication, redirecting data traffic to the designated frequency (a shared data channel) on an interconnected wireless data network exhibiting (cellular) reuse of data channel frequencies; and returning the subscriber's transceiver to voice mode upon cessation of data communications. A secretarial telephone station for use with a secretarial answering system and a switching system which includes a plurality of subscriber telephone stations each equipped with a buzzer. The secretarial answering system is connected to the subscriber stations and transmits subscriber station busy, idle and ringing status and line identification information to the secretarial station. The secretarial station includes a lamp and switch pair for each associated subscriber station, first and second processing units, and an audible signalling circuit. The first processing unit receives this information according to a link bus protocol for packetized messages. The second processing unit receives this information and causes the lamp associated with each of the subscriber stations to display dark, lit or flashing signals corresponding to the idle, busy and ringing status. The second processing unit also causes the audible signalling circuit to provide a ringing tone whenever a lamp is flashed. In response to operation of the switch associated with a called subscriber station, the second processing unit transmits a directed call pickup and a call transfer message to the switching system which route the subscriber's incoming call to the secretarial station for screening. A buzzing requested message is then transmitted to the secretarial answering system via the first processing unit according to a link bus protocol for packetized messages. The buzzing requested message informs the secretarial answering system to cause the subscriber station's buzzer to provide an audible signal indicating that the current incoming call has been screened by a secretary.
