Recombinant microorganisms having an improved ability to co-metabolize in medium both fructose and glucose are described. The recombinant microorganisms comprise a promoter operably linked to a native or non-native nucleotide sequence that encodes a fucose: H+ symporter polypeptide. The recombinant microorganisms are useful for the production of a variety of products including glycerol and glycerol derivatives such as 1,3-propanediol and 3-hydroxypropionic acid.

Co-metabolism of fructose and glucose in microbial production strains

The invention is a process useful for providing a treated support comprising a porous nanoweb coating wherein the treated support is characterized by a biofilm cell count of less than 50% that of an untreated porous support control. The process is useful for modifying porous materials, such as filter media and barrier fabrics to provide resistance to biofouling. The porous nanoweb coating is comprised of fibrous structures derived from gelation and drying of supramolecular assemblies of non-covalently bonded organogelators. Typical organogelators useful in the invention include those that assemble via hydrogen bonding and &#x3c0;-stacking.

Method for providing resistance to biofouling in a porous support

Processes for providing durable antimicrobial surfaces are disclosed that comprise treating a polymer substrate surface with formaldehyde followed by treatment with an antimicrobial peptide. Further embodiments include articles, including medical devices, characterized by a durable antimicrobial surface provided by the processes of the invention.
