Biocompatible polymers and adhesives have a cyanoacrylic core and other substituents such as therapeutic agents, targeting moieties, imaging agents, amino acid residues or other organic moieties. Exemplary uses of inventive compositions include use as sealants and adhesives for medical uses, and as polymeric formulations for biocompatible implants and matrices and drug delivery.

A method of making a sterile adhesive composition includes placing a mixture of a polymerizable adhesive monomer and a thickening agent in a container, sealing the container, and sterilizing the mixture and the container. The method provides superior viscosity for the monomer composition. An adhesive composition includes 2-octyl cyanoacrylate and at least one thickener. The sterile adhesive composition is particularly useful as a medical adhesive and can comprise 1,1-disubstituted ethylene monomers, such as &agr;-cyanoacrylates.

An article of manufacture for dispensing an adhesive material, such as a synthetic or semi-synthetic polymerizable or cross-linkable monomer material, includes a container body, and a porous applicator tip having a proximal end that is attached to the container body, and a distal end located away from the container body, wherein the adhesive material is located in the container body in a non-contacting relationship with the applicator tip prior to dispensing the material. A flow pattern of the adhesive material within or on the applicator tip is controlled by providing one or more cuts in the applicator tip to alter flow properties of the adhesive material through the applicator tip.

A method of treating living tissue includes applying to living tissue a biocompatible adhesive composition containing at least one alkyl ester cyanoacrylate monomer and a polymerization initiator or accelerator, wherein the polymerization initiator or accelerator is a quaternary amine.
