An electrosurgical system includes a first unit including a generator, and a second unit including an electrode assembly, the second unit being detachably connectible to the first unit such that radio frequency power can be conveyed to the electrode assembly, wherein the second unit firstly includes a passive electrical identification component having a parameter of a finite non-zero value indicative of a characteristic of the electrode assembly, and the second unit additionally includes an output circuit adapted to generate an identifiable characteristic signal, the first unit firstly including a sensing circuit for determining the value of the electrical identification component so as to identify the second unit when the second unit is connected to the first unit, and the first unit additionally including means for receiving the identifiable characteristic signal from the output circuit when the second unit is connected to the first unit.

Electrosurgical system and an electrode assembly for an electrosurgical system

A method of controlling an electrosurgical system is described, the system including an electrosurgical generator and an electrosurgical instrument connected to the generator by means of a cable. A radio frequency signal is supplied to the electrosurgical instrument at an operating frequency, and the voltage of the radio frequency signal is monitored at a frequency corresponding to the frequency of a resonant circuit established by the electrosurgical instrument together with the cable. The monitored voltage is capable of indicating the initiation of arcing from the electrosurgical instrument, such that the voltage of the radio frequency signal can be adjusted in response to the monitored voltage at the resonant frequency. The magnitude of the monitored voltage is an indication of the degree of arcing. An electrosurgical system including an arc detector is also disclosed.

Electrosurgical system

In an electrosurgical system having a generator for generating radio frequency (RF) power and an electrosurgical instrument, the instrument includes a passive electrical identification component having a parameter of finite non-zero value identifying the instrument. The generator has a sensing circuit with a second electrical component, a signal source providing a voltage step-change, and a signal detector for detecting a transient response of the combination of the identification component and the second electrical component, the detector output signal being representative of the parameter value thereby allowing automatic identification of the instrument when it is connected to the generator. Also disclosed is an electrode assembly in which the identification component is associated with a digital device including a memory, the instrument having a pair of contacts interconnected by the identification component and serving to supply power from the generator to the digital device and/or convey data from a data output of the digital device.

An electrosurgical system has an electrosurgical generator with a multiple-phase RF output stage coupled to a multiple-electrode electrosurgical instrument. The instrument has three treatment electrodes each of which is coupled to a respective generator output driven from, for instance, a three-phase output transformer. Continuous RF output voltage waveforms are simultaneously delivered to respective generator outputs at the operating frequency, each waveform being phase-displaced with respect to the other waveforms. The magnitude of the RF output voltage waveform delivered to at least one of the generator outputs is sufficient to cause tissue vaporisation at the respective treatment electrodes when the system is used for tissue treatment. Also disclosed is an electrosurgical generator in combination with an instrument having both bipolar coagulation electrodes and a remote return pad, the generator including means for varying the RF voltage outputs to vary the relative preponderance of bipolar and monopolar coagulation.
