A rotary anvil is outfitted with pins protruding from the base of an axially extending channel along the surface of the anvil. A cutting mat having a generally elongate body includes first and second locking members projecting from opposite axial ends thereof. The cutting mat is installed on the anvil such that the first and second locking members are positioned within the channel over one of the pins. The cutting mat may include a foot extending from the first locking member that includes a pin receptacle that seats down over the pin. Alternatively, a lockup device may be provided to temporarily secure the cutting mat to the rotary anvil. The lockup device includes a pin receptacle on the bottom surface thereof adapted to seat down over the pin. The first and second locking members of the cutting mat are then installed into the channel in cooperation with the lockup device.

Cutting mat for a rotary anvil

A method of dispensing a metal-backed printing blanket onto a printing press cylinder in a controlled fashion is provided. A carton containing the rolled printing blanket may be provided, and a lengthwise slit or opening is opened to withdraw a mounting end of the printing blanket. The alignment and tension of the printing blanket is controlled as it mounts on the printing press cylinder. Parallel reference lines on the carton may be used to draw alignment marks on the printing blanket such that it may be properly inserted into a locking device of the printing press cylinder. The alignment and tension may be controlled using graspable sides of the carton.

Method of dispensing metal-backed printing blankets

A cutting mat includes at least one edge having a nonlinear shape. By nonlinear shape, it is meant that at least one edge of the cutting mat does not follow a single, straight path across the entire length of that edge. For example, a cutting mat may have opposing nonlinear circumferential edges. The cutting mat may include nonlinear axial edges in lieu of, or in addition to the nonlinear circumferential edges.

A lockup device for securing cutting mats to a rotary anvil comprises a base portion, one sidewall, and a wedge portion, and is adapted to be inserted into the channel of the rotary anvil such that the sidewall of the lockup device is adjacent a wall of the channel. A cutting mat having opposing first and second flanged ends is wrapped around the rotary anvil. The first flange is compressed between the locking wedge and the sidewall of the lockup device. The second flange is compressed between the locking wedge and a channel wall. As such, the locking wedge and cutting mat are frictionally secured to the rotary anvil. Further, the cutting mat may be quickly repositioned by releasing the second flange from the channel. When the cutting mat is unwrapped from the rotary anvil, the lockup device remains secured to the first flange, allowing for quick repositioning.

Lock-up system for cutting mat

A cutting mat comprises a cutting mat body and a lock assembly arranged to secure the cutting mat to a rotary anvil. The lock assembly comprises male and female locking members formed at opposite ends of the cutting mat and integral therewith. There are no metal frames or other components welded or otherwise secured to the male or female locking members. The female locking member slips into an axial channel on a rotary anvil. The cutting mat is wrapped around the rotary anvil, and the male member is inserted into the axial channel in locking relationship with the female locking member. Further, the axial edges of the cutting mat are formed in mating, complimentary serpentine shape to prevent a cutting blade from slipping into the seam between adjacent cutting mat surfaces.

Boltless cutting mat lock up

A carton is provided for packaging, shipping, and dispensing a metal-backed printing blanket onto a printing press cylinder in a controlled fashion. A lengthwise slit or opening can easily be formed in a panel of the carton from which only an end of the metal-backed printing blanket may be removed. Parallel reference lines may also be included on the carton which permit alignment marks to be drawn on the printing blanket such that it may be properly inserted into a locking device of the printing press cylinder. Graspable sides of the carton facilitate tension and alignment control as the printing blanket is dispensed onto the cylinder.
