A method for monitoring a chromatograph used to control production of a chemical product. The method involves sampling a chemical mixture of chemical components used during the production to form the chemical product, measuring the composition of the sample with a chromatograph and adjusting the amount of the chemical components based on the measured composition. The method also involves measuring actual parameters of the sample with at least one gauge, determining expected parameters of the sample based on the measured composition and the measured actual parameters using an equation-of-state, and detecting a fault in the chromatograph by comparing the expected parameters with the actual parameters.

Method of monitoring production of a chemical product and a chromatograph used therewith

A method for the delivery of a catalyst to a polymerization reactor is disclosed, comprising: contacting a catalyst with a carrier fluid comprising an inert hydrocarbon in gaseous form, the inert hydrocarbon having a normal boiling point of about &#x2212;1&#xb0; C. to about 81&#xb0; C.; and flowing the carrier fluid to the polymerization reactor such that the carrier fluid transports the catalyst to the polymerization reactor. A catalyst delivery system is disclosed, comprising: a catalyst vessel for containing a catalyst; a catalyst injection line for delivering the catalyst to a polymerization reactor, the catalyst injection line being in fluid communication with the catalyst vessel and the polymerization reactor; and a carrier fluid line in fluid communication with the catalyst injection line for delivering a carrier fluid comprising an inert hydrocarbon to the catalyst injection line, the inert hydrocarbon having a normal boiling point of about &#x2212;1&#xb0; C. to about 81&#xb0; C.

Methods and systems for catalyst delivery

A method for improving the prediction of polymer properties and a system having improved polymer property prediction capabilities is provided. The method for improving the prediction of polymer properties comprises: (1) providing a polymer; (2) providing a prediction model; (3) utilizing said prediction model to define an average polymer property prediction value; (4) determining a feasible range; (5) measuring one or more properties of said polymer; (6) determining whether said one or measured polymer properties are within said feasible range: (7) validating said one or more measured polymer properties if said one or more measured polymer properties fall within the feasible range or invalidating said one or more measured polymer properties if said one or more measured polymer properties fall outside of the feasible range; (8) optionally updating said prediction model; (9) repeating said previous steps at least one or more times; and (10) thereby improving the prediction of polymer properties.

Method for improving the prediction of polymer properties

Embodiments of the invention provide a method of controlling a gas-phase polymerization process. The method includes determining a difference between a control variable of the polymerization process, such as the production rate, and the desired value of the control variable; adjusting or maintaining a first manipulated variable to at least partially compensate for the difference between the control variable and the desired value; and adjusting or maintaining a second manipulated variable to at least partially compensate for the effect of adjusting or maintaining the first manipulated variable. The first and second manipulated variables can include process variables such as the fluidized bed weight, the catalyst concentration, the concentration of one or more monomers, the flow of one or more comonomers, the ratio of one comonomer to another comonomer, the activator concentration, the ratio of an activator to selectivity control agent, the concentration of a chain transfer agent, and the retardant concentration.

Method of controlling a polymerization reactor

The present invention provides methods of controlling a gas-phase polymerization process. The method includes determining a difference between a control variable of the polymerization process, such as the production rate, and the desired value of the control variable; adjusting or maintaining a first manipulated variable to at least partially compensate for the difference between the control variable and the desired value; and adjusting or maintaining a second manipulated variable to at least partially compensate for the effect of adjusting or maintaining the first manipulated variable. The first and second manipulated variables can include process variables such as the fluidized bed weight, the catalyst concentration, the concentration of one or more monomers, the flow of one or more comonomers, the ratio of one comonomer to another comonomer, the activator concentration, the ratio of an activator to selectivity control agent, the concentration of a chain transfer agent, and the retardant concentration.

A method and apparatus are disclosed for controlling product discharge from a fluidized bed reactor and for minimizing the loss of the unreacted monomer in the fluidizing gas upon removing the solid polymer product from the reactor. The method and apparatus utilize at least one detector in the product tank or its vent line and a control system in communication with the detector and the product tank fill valve, along with certain algorithms, to adjust by an iterative process, the product discharge time, thereby maximizing resin fill in the product tank and minimizing the lost reactor gas volume.

Raw material efficiency method and process

The invention is directed to a polymerization system and method of controlling resin properties during the production of bimodal and multimodal polymer compositions using at least one manipulated variable to minimize dynamic deviations from polymer characteristics. In particular embodiments, the method of control includes determining a property of the resin based on a current and/or previous values or estimates or process variables or polymer characteristics. In this manner the control actions serve to reduce process upsets or facilitate in transitioning to a new product or grade to reduce the amount of off-grade resin material produced during transition or during steady state manufacture.

Methods of controlling properties in multimodal systems

The invention provides a novel method of monitoring a process. The method also has the ability to take predetermined actions based on the monitored data. These actions avoid or mitigate process abnormalities or upsets that might impact product quality, production, and/or process efficiencies. The method includes the steps of: obtaining at least one input process variable; determining a comparative process value based on the at least one input process variable using a first method having a first time-based weighting function; determining an expected process value based on the at least one input process variable using a second method having a second time-based weighting function; determining a first deviation value based on the at least one input process variable or historical data; calculating a limit range having a maximum limit and a minimum limit using the expected process value and the first deviation value; and comparing the comparative process value to the limit range.

Process monitoring technique and related actions

A process for controlling a continuous gas phase exothermic process in a reactor comprising: (i) effecting a gas phase exothermic reaction under a set of operating conditions in the presence of a cooling agent, the cooling agent having a pre-selected concentration and feed rate of an induced cooling agent; (ii) determining a maximum production rate (I) without regard to limitations due to the cooling agent under the operating conditions; (iii) determining a maximum production rate (II) with regard to limitations due to the cooling agent under the operating conditions; (iv) calculating an optimal concentration of the induced cooling agent such that the difference between (I) and (II) is minimized; and (v) adjusting the feed rate of the induced cooling agent to achieve the concentration value calculated in (iv).

Method for online estimation of reactor split for multimodal polyolefins

A method for controlling resin properties during the production of polyolefins is provided. The method utilizes coordinated manipulation of reaction temperature in combination with a secondary process variable to control resin flow properties to rapidly respond to manufacturing upsets or specification changes to minimize off-grade or transition polymer material when moving from one polymer grade to another, or during a disturbance in a steady state production.

Control of resin properties

A process is disclosed for removing particulate product from a fluidized bed reactor to optimize, within the constraints of the product removal cycle, conservation of gas in which the product is entrained. Data are compiled on the time required for equalizing pressure between product discharge tanks, and these data are used to determine the optimum times for various valves to be open. Product movement steps and equalization steps can be performed simultaneously.
