Methods and systems for conducting a secure online transaction with a physical payment card. In an embodiment, a user computer identifies, during an online transaction, a selection of a secure payment option involving a physical payment card. Next, a security module of the user computer enters a secure transaction mode of operation which prevents other applications running on the user computer from access to cardholder data, establishes a communication session with a payment provider device, and prompts a user to present a payment card to a card reader device associated with the user computer. The card reader device then reads cardholder data from the physical payment card, and the security module creates a request message. A Chip Authentication Program based on 3-D Secure protocols is provided for authenticating customers' on-line transactions. An issuer, who may be a payment card issuer, operates Access Control and Authentication Request Servers for authenticating transactions by individual customers who are identified by their personal EMV-complaint smart cards. An authentication token is generated at the point of interaction (POI) for each transaction based on information from the customer's smart card and transaction specific information sent directly by the issuer to populate a web page at the POI. Authentication tokens generated at the POI are evaluated by the Authentication Request Server to authenticate individual customer and/or card presence at the transaction POI. Authentication values are transported on-line in designated Universal Cardholder Authentication Fields consistent with 3-D Secure protocols.

A personal powered proximity payment device that can be owned by or issued to an individual user is provided. The device is a non-ISO card device that includes an internal dual-mode (contact and contactless) chip card coupled to a display and a robust PIN entry or biometric reading means. The device provides proximity payment functions, and optional proximity payment on/off and local pre-purchase account holder verification functions to the individual user.

All-in-one proximity payment device with local authentication

A system is described for remotely issuing a payment device. The system includes a payment network, a chip card issuer and a remote dispensing device. The remote dispensing device is configured to receive a request from a consumer to purchase a proximity payment card, to transmit a transaction authorization request to the payment network and to receive a transaction authorization. The remote dispensing device then reads proximity payment card information from a pre-personalized proximity payment card, transmits it and a request for personalization data to the chip card issuer, receives the personalization data and transmits it to the pre-personalized proximity payment card to store thereon to create a personalized proximity payment card, and lastly dispenses the personalized proximity payment card to the consumer.

Methods and systems to remotely issue proximity payment devices

Methods and apparatus for issuing a payment device from a remote dispensing device are provided. In an embodiment, a dispensing device receives a purchase request including a load amount, to purchase a proximity payment device. The dispensing device reads proximity payment device information from a stored pre-personalized proximity payment device, establishes a secure communications channel with a security terminal, encrypts a personalization data request, transmits it to the proximity device issuer server, and receives an encrypted personalization message. The dispensing device then decrypts the encrypted personalization message to obtain personalization data, writes the personalization data and the load amount to the pre-personalized proximity payment device, and then dispenses the personalized proximity payment device.

Pursuant to some embodiments, methods, systems, apparatus, computer program code and means for conducting an online transaction by a user operating a computer are provided which include identifying, at the computer, that the user has selected a secure payment option during a transaction with a merchant. The computer is caused to enter a private session. During the private session, payment card data from a physical payment card held by the user is received, and the payment card data is forwarded to a payment provider to cause the payment provider to provide substitute payment card details to the merchant to complete the transaction.

Pursuant to some embodiments, methods, apparatus, systems, devices, and means for issuing a payment device from a remote dispensing device are provided which include receiving a request to purchase a payment device from the remote dispensing device, the request including a load amount. Device information is read from a pre-personalized payment device in the remote dispensing device, and a request is made to an issuer of the pre-personalized payment device, for personalization data to personalize the pre-personalized payment device. In some embodiments, the request is sent over a secure authenticated session established between a module of the dispensing device and the issuer. The personalization data is loaded in the pre-personalized payment device to create a personalized payment device, and the personalized payment device is dispensed for use by a consumer.

Methods and systems for mutual authentication and personalizing a transaction device, such as a payment, transaction, or identity card. Successively generated one time codes are calculated by a first and second entity. One of the codes is transmitted to the second entity, which verifies the code is proper, then encrypts a second one time code using a third one time code and transmits the encrypted data to the first entity. The first entity decrypts the data using the third one time code, verifies the encrypted second one time code is proper, thereby mutually authenticating, and establishing a shared encryption key for subsequent communications, including transmission of personalization data.
