A pressure housing assembly according to exemplary aspects includes: a saddle assembly configured to encase a midpoint access section of a cable; and a pressure housing configured to be mounted on the saddle assembly. The saddle assembly has a first cable SSTL tube opening where a first seal member is provided; and a second cable SSTL tube opening where a second seal member is provided. The pressure housing has a corresponding first cable SSTL tube opening where a third seal member is provided; a second cable SSTL tube opening where a fourth seal member is provided; and a port configured to allow at least one penetrator to be inserted therethrough. The saddle assembly comprises a seal block configured to at least partially surround the midpoint access section of the cable.

An armored cable termination/fiber-optic seal which connects a fiber optic cable&#x2014;the fiber optic cable including one or more armor wires and one or more cable tubes&#x2014;to a pressure housing, the armored cable termination/fiber-optic seal including: an armored termination which locks the one or more armor wires in a conical cavity; sealing paths which block water from traveling in the interstitial space between the one or more armor wires and the one or more cable tubes into the pressure housing; and fiber feed-through tubes which block water from traveling in the interior of the one or more cable tubes into the pressure housing.

A modular undersea optical fiber telecommunication system includes a plurality of fiber optic cable segments each containing fibers of a fiber type different from at least some of the other cable segments. Each cable segment has a plug unit at one end and a receptacle unit at the opposite end comprising mating halves of an underwater connector. The connector units contain a plurality of optical fiber contact terminals, and each optical fiber in the cable segment is terminated to a respective one of the contact terminals in the plug unit at one end and to a respective one of the contact terminals in the receptacle unit at the opposite end. The plug unit of each cable segment is releasably securable to a receptacle unit of a selected second cable segment and the receptacle unit of each cable segment is releasably securable to a plug unit of a selected third cable segment, such that the optical fibers in the cable segment are connected with the fibers in the second and third cable segments without requiring splices.

Undersea optical fiber telecommunication system and method

An underwater cable branching apparatus has an elongate cable junction housing for positioning in line between two cables for installation underwater. The housing has through bores at each end for receiving the ends of respective first and second cables, and the cables are each terminated at a respective connector in the housing for releasably connecting the two cable ends together. Each connector is pivotally and retractably mounted in the housing by a respective pivotal linkage, such that the connectors can be separated and rotated upwardly out of the housing by an ROV for selective connection to other cables in an underwater network, to permit branching.

Underwater cable branching apparatus and method

A cable system for installation on the ocean floor or under another body of water includes a plurality of sub-sea junction boxes installed at spaced locations throughout a predetermined sub-oceanic cable network. At least some of the junction boxes are located at a predetermined distance off-shore from a respective on-shore cable junction node. A single main, high fiber count conduit extends from each off-shore junction box to the respective on-shore cable junction node. Each off-shore junction box has plurality of ports for releasable connection to a selected offshore cable terminated at the junction box, and a fiber routing unit in the junction box connects at least some of the ports to fibers in the main conduit.

Sub-oceanic cable network system and method

A cable branching apparatus for installation underwater has a circuit distribution unit with first and second ports connected to respective cables, and at least two additional, third and fourth ports. A switch assembly in the circuit distribution unit selectively connects the first port to the second port in a straight through arrangement, or the first and second ports to the third and fourth ports, respectively, in a branching configuration. At least two wet mateable underwater connectors each comprise a dummy unit and an active unit releasably secured to the dummy and connected to a respective one of the third and fourth ports. Branch cables can be selectively connected to one or both cables underwater simply by separating one or both dummy units from the active units, and connecting the active units to mating connector units at the end of branch cables, using an ROV.
