The ignition coil driver module of the present invention includes a control integrated circuit, formed of a low voltage semiconductor material, and a high current load driver integrated circuit, formed of a high voltage integrated circuit, housed within a common package. The high current load driver integrated circuit is responsive to a low voltage drive signal provided by the control integrated circuit to permit a load current to flow unrestricted through the load driver integrated circuit and an inductive load connected thereto. The control integrated circuit includes a sense resistor which receives the load current from the high current load driver integrated circuit, converts this current to a sense voltage, compares the sense voltage to a reference voltage generated within the control integrated circuit, and forces the low voltage drive signal to drop to a level which will limit the load current to a predetermined current value.

Coil current limiting feature for an ignition coil driver module

The ignition coil driver module of the present invention includes a control integrated circuit and a high current load driver integrated circuit housed within a common package such as a TO-247 or TO-264 package. The control integrated circuit is formed of a semiconductor material manufactured in accordance with a standard low-voltage integrated circuit processing technology and is responsive to a control signal input to provide a low voltage drive signal. The high current load driver integrated circuit is formed of a semiconductor material manufactured in accordance with a high-voltage integrated circuit processing technology and is responsive to the low voltage drive signal to energize the high current load. A current limit function is further provided for limiting the load current to a predetermined level.

Ignition coil driver module

An insulated gate electrical load driving device includes simple and accurate gate control circuitry for limiting load current therethrough. Preferably, all circuitry is formed of a single integrated circuit having the insulated gate load driving device dielectrically isolated from the gate control circuitry. The gate control circuitry may include either one, or both, of a zener diode and a resistor divider. An input drive signal to the circuit is accurately controlled by the gate control circuitry to thereby limit the saturation current through the insulated load driving device, and hence the load current, to predetermined current level. Preferably, the predetermined saturation current level falls within a range of saturation currents of the insulated gate load driving device that is substantially constant over a wide operating temperature range.

Electrical load driving device including load current limiting circuitry

The multi-channel ignition coil driver module of the present invention includes a control integrated circuit and multiple high current load driver integrated circuits housed within a common package. The control integrated circuit is formed of a semiconductor material manufactured in accordance with a standard low-voltage integrated circuit processing technology and is responsive to multiple control signal inputs to provide a corresponding multiple number of low voltage drive signals. Each of the high current load driver integrated circuits are formed of a semiconductor material manufactured in accordance with a high-voltage integrated circuit processing technology and are each responsive to a different one of the low voltage drive signals to energize a different one of a multiple number of high current loads. A current limit function is further provided in each of the multiple channels for limiting the corresponding load current to a predetermined level.

Multi-channel ignition coil driver module

An apparatus for developing a signal voltage that represents the angular position of the crankshaft of an internal combustion engine. The apparatus includes a variable reluctance sensor that has a pick-up coil. The sensor is associated with means driven by the crankshaft of the engine for causing an alternating voltage to be induced in the pick-up coil as the crankshaft rotates. The apparatus includes a negative voltage clamp which clamps the voltage of a junction of the clamp circuit to substantially ground potential during negative half-cycles of the alternating voltage induced in the pick-up coil. The clamp circuit is adapted to be connected to a control circuit that is an integrated circuit having a bulk substrate diode. The clamp circuit prevents forward biasing of the bulk substrate diode.

A reference voltage developing circuit that develops a multiple slope reference voltage that is a function of temperature. The circuit has a plurality of base-emitter multipliers each of which includes a transistor and each of which develops an output voltage that is a function of the base-emitter voltage of the transistor of the multiplier. Since the base-emitter voltage varies with changes in temperature, each multiplier circuit develops a voltage that varies with changes in temperature. The multiplier circuits have different multiplier magnitudes to thereby provide temperature dependent output voltages that have different slopes. A voltage selector circuit is connected to the multiplier circuits and it provides an output voltage that corresponds to the higher of the output voltages developed by the multiplier circuits.

Temperature compensated voltage reference circuit

A concentric collector PNP transistor is utilized in electrical circuits to determine when the voltages of different parts of a circuit are very close to each other. The transistor has an emitter zone, an inner collector zone that surrounds the emitter zone and an outer collector zone that surrounds both the emitter zone and the inner collector zone. When the voltage of the emitter is slightly higher than the voltage of the inner collector a signal is developed at the outer collector which is used as a trigger or control signal. An oscillator-voltage doubler circuit and a series pass voltage regulator circuit are disclosed that utilize the concentric collector transistor.

A high gain voltage responsive current source supplies emitter current to a lateral input PNP transistor in a monolithic integrated circuit voltage responsive switch and, in conjunction with an impedance between the voltage signal input terminal and base region of the input PNP transistor, protects the voltage responsive switch from negative voltage transients at the signal input terminal.
