A unit, such as a transport refrigeration unit, may include a plurality of components arranged in multiple stages. At least a portion of the componentsmay be arranged in a serial or parallel manner. A position associated with the plurality of components may be selected to control a load on a power source, such as an engine. For example, a position for each of the components may be selected so as to maximize a delivery of available power from the power source to the unit. In some embodiments, one or more controllersmay measure a parameter associated with the power source and select a position for one or more of the components. A power supply system for a transport refrigeration system includes an engine coupled to a compressor of a refrigeration unit for direct drive powering the compressor and a generator arranged to also be direct driven by the engine for generating electric power. The generator and the compressor are mounted to a common drive shaft driven by the engine, and the generator may be integrated with the compressor. The power supply system may further include an alternator arranged to be belt driven by the engine for generating DC electric power. A battery pack may be provided for storing and supplying additional DC power. During peak load demand on the refrigeration unit, the engine may be operated with the generator switched off to directly drive the compressor and direct current may be drawn from the battery pack to drive the condenser/gas cooler and evaporator fans.

One embodiment can include a damper assembly including a damper door configured to operate in a first position (e.g., closed), a second position (e.g., open), and at least one intermediate position. A transport refrigeration system has an engine driving an electric generator. A compressor is powered by the generator. At least one first electric fan is positioned to drive an airflow across a heat rejection heat exchanger. At least one second electric fan is positioned to drive an airflow across a heat absorption heat exchanger. A controller is coupled to the compressor and first and second fans. The controller is configured to: start the engine; engage the generator and at least one of the first fans before the engine has reached running speed; after the engine has reached running speed, start the compressor; and after starting the compressor, start at least one of the second fans.

A controller is coupled to the expansi&#xf3;n device to control operation of the expansi&#xf3;n device. The controller is configured to op&#xe9;rate the expansi&#xf3;n device to control an evaporator superheat. The evaporator superheat is to be relatively high for a set temperature of a first valu&#xe9; associated with non-frozen perishables. The evaporator superheat is to be relatively low for a second valu&#xe9; of the temperature associated with frozen goods and subject to maintenance of a minimum suction superheat.

Refrigerated transport system

In a transport refrigeration system which is susceptible to having its drive motors connected to a power source in reverse phase relationship to thereby operate the drive motors in reverse, provision is made to measure the current flow to the motors during operation in each direction and for comparing those current flows to determine which is greater and therefore representative of operation in the proper direction. A backup method is also provided for sensing the ambient temperature of the air downstream of the condenser coil, both before and during motor operation to determine whether the temperature during motor operation is greater than that prior to operation to thereby indicate a proper connection.

Phase correction method and apparatus

A refrigerant cycle is provided with a transient mode for moving from a defrost cycle back to steady state operation. In particular, some default position of the expansion device is selected when defrost cycle ends. The evaporator is hot at the end of defrost cycle, and might otherwise suggest an increased flow of refrigerant through the expansion device, which could be undesirable. Thus, a control for the inventive system moves the expansion device to a defrost transient position, with the defrost transient position restricting the flow of refrigerant to a value that would be less than that dictated by the high temperature of the evaporator. At some period of time after the end of the defrost mode, the refrigerant cycle can be returned to state steady operation.
