Molded article, container and a method for the molding and recycling thereof

Disclosed herein, amongst other things, is a method of transferring a molded article from a moveable mold half of a mold into a receptacle of a post-mold tool. The method includes positioning the moveable mold half relative to the post-mold tool to position the molded article thereon closer to the receptacle and retracting the moveable mold half while simultaneously extending a stripping device to eject the molded article from the moveable mold half and to transfer it into the receptacle.

A dynamic mixer and associated injection molding system for mixing a melt flow. The injection molding system includes: a hot runner assembly having a plurality of splits; an injection unit that delivers a melt flow to the plurality of splits in the hot runner assembly via a melt channel; and a dynamic mixer incorporated into the melt channel upstream from the plurality of splits, wherein the dynamic mixer includes a rotor assembly configured to be rotationally driven by the melt flow, and wherein the rotor assembly is further configured to mix the melt flow passing through the melt channel.

Disclosed is a drive unit operable to translate and rotate a shaft, the drive unit including: (i) a hollow electric motor having a rotor, (ii) a fluid cylinder, (iii) means for connecting the shaft to the rotor of the hollow electric motor, (iv) means permitting the shaft to move lengthwise coupled with the fluid cylinder, and (iv) means connecting the fluid cylinder to the shaft, whereby the shaft may be rotated by the hollow electric motor and moved lengthwise by the fluid cylinder, and wherein the fluid cylinder has an outer wall coupled with the rotor of the hollow electric motor.

Drive assembly for rotating and translating a shaft

A drive assembly for rotating and translating a shaft comprising a hollow shaft motor and a fluid cylinder. The hollow shaft motor rotates the shaft and the fluid cylinder moves the shaft lengthwise. The drive is particularly useful in the injection unit of an injection-molding machine. In one preferred embodiment the injection unit includes a hollow electric motor and a hydraulic cylinder. A first cylinder wall of the hydraulic cylinder is joined to a rotor of the hollow motor. A second cylinder wall of the cylinder is connected to a stationary portion of the hollow motor. A piston has two end portions. One end portion of the piston engages the first cylinder wall and the other end portion of the piston engages the second cylinder wall. Means for rotating the piston are attached to the rotor. The means for rotating also permits the piston end portions to slide along the cylinder walls. One channel means provides hydraulic fluid to drive the piston in a forward direction and another channel means provides hydraulic fluid to drive the piston in a reverse direction. Means are provided for attaching an injection screw to the piston. In the preferred arrangement, the cylinder is at least partially situated within the hollow motor.

Methods for enhanced purging of an injection molding shooting pot assembly are provided. Old melt is purged from a shooting pot having an injection plunger slidably received in an injection cylinder. The plunger is moved by a powered piston, which moves the injection plunger to a purging position. The plunger is then arrested in the purging position. Sufficient new melt is injected through an inlet positioned such that the new melt sweeps substantially an entire volume of the injection cylinder ahead of the injection plunger in flowing between the inlet and a single outlet remote from the inlet.

A rotatable turret block is mounted on an index molding machine. The turret block includes at least one mold core for forming molded articles thereon at least one face of the rotatable turret block. The molded articles are transferred from the mold cores to spaced track members for retention and cooling thereon, and the cooled molded articles removed from the track members.

Cooling process for molded articles

Construction includes a stationary platen and a movable platen movable with respect to the stationary platen from a closed position in clamping engagement with the stationary platen to an open position spaced from the stationary platen. At least two tiebars are provided connecting the stationary platen to the movable platen, and a stroke cylinder within each tiebar operative to move the platens from an open to closed position and from a closed to open position. Clamping means are provided to clamp the platens together in the closed position, and including means carried by the tiebars to engage the clamping means.

An apparatus and method for detecting whether platens in a mold clamp remain parallel throughout an entire molding process. The apparatus includes a frame, a first platen having a surface orthogonal to a predetermined axis, a second platen having a surface opposing the first platen, the second platen being reciprocatable along the predetermined axis, actuating cylinders for reciprocating the second platen along the predetermined axis, and positions transducers for electromagnetically detecting the positions of a plurality of points on the surface of the second platen. The method includes the steps of emitting first and second electromagnetic interrogation pulses from a controller, transmitting the first pulse to a first transducer rod fixed relative to the first platen, and transmitting the second pulse to a second transducer rod fixed relative to the first platen and parallel to the first transducer rod, generating a first return signal when the first pulse reaches a magnet disposed adjacent to the first transducer rod and fixed relative to one end of the second platen, and generating a second return signal when the second pulse reaches a magnet disposed adjacent to the second transducer and fixed relative to an opposite end of the second platen, transmitting each of the first and second return signals to the controller, measuring the time elapsed between the emission of each pulse and the arrival of the corresponding return signal at the controller, and determining, based on the times elapsed, whether the opposing surfaces of the second platen and the first platen are substantially parallel.

Cooling device for molded articles

The present invention relates to a device for unloading and cooling molded parts from an injection molding machine having an index turret block rotatable about a central axis. The device comprises a cooling turret block rotatable about an axis substantially parallel to the central axis, which cooling turret block has a plurality of faces. At least one of the faces includes a plurality of nozzles for applying a cooling fluid to surfaces of the molded parts while the molded parts are resident on the index turret block. At least two of the other faces of the cooling turret block include a plurality of receiving tubes for receiving molded parts from the index turret block for further cooling. The cooling turret block of the present invention is capable of cooling multiple sets of molded parts.

The present invention relates to an improved injection molding machine and process. The injection molding machine includes a first mold half with at least one mold cavity or mold core and a rotatable turret means rotatable on an axis for rotating a pair of mating mold halves into alignment with the first mold half. Each mating mold half includes at least one mold core or mold cavity matable with the first mold half for forming a mold for forming at least one molded article. The turret block is movable so that a first one of the mating mold halves can be brought into contact with the first mold half. The machine also includes an injection system for injecting molten material into the mold to form the molded article(s). After the injection cycle is completed, the turret block with the molded article(s) thereon is moved away from the first mold half and is rotated by 180 degrees to align a second one of the mating mold halves with the first mold half and to bring the molded article(s) to an ejection position. Thereafter, the molded article(s) are allowed to be dropped via gravity onto a molded article receiving device.
