A combined toxic gas sensor and an oxygen sensor includes a sensor body with a top plate provided with a toxic gas diffusion barrier leading to a chamber from having an outlet aperture registering with the diffusion barrier of the oxygen sensor.

Gas sensors

An electrochemical gas sensor having a housing in which components of the sensor are mounted. A number of electrical connectors are secured to the housing and coupled to respective sensor components enabling the sensor to be connected to a sensor monitoring system for monitoring an electrical output from the sensor and for determining gas concentration. The housing includes one or more indicating formations whose position on the housing causes an appropriate calibration parameter to be selected.

Electrochemical gas sensor

An electrochemical gas sensor comprises sensing and counter electrodes mounted on the same side of a planar support. An electrolyte is in contact with the sensing and counter electrodes. A capillary controls the access of gas to the sensing electrode. A barrier layer extends over the sensing and counter electrodes, the barrier layer being positioned relative to the capillary and the support being non-electrically conductive and being sufficiently porous such that gas from the capillary is guided transversely and laterally through the support first to reach the sensing electrode and then to reach the counter electrode.

An electrochemical gas sensor assembly comprises an electrochemical gas sensor (1) including sensing (39) and counter (32) electrodes, an intervening body of electrolyte contacting the electrodes, and means (5) for controlling the diffusion of gas to the sensing electrode. A test gas generator (7) is connected to the sensor so as to supply a test gas directly to the sensing electrode (39) by-passing the gas diffusion control means (5).

Electrochemical gas sensor assembly

A gas sensing assembly from which a number of gas sensing devices can be constructed for determining the concentration of an active gas in a gas mixture. The assembly comprises a self-contained sensing unit including a sensing element at which active gas reacts and is consumed, an output signal being produced proportional to the rate of reaction of active gas. A number of different control members are provided each defining a respective gas diffusion barrier, each member being separately securable to the sensing unit and detachable therefrom while leaving the sensing unit intact to enable gas sensing devices of different sensitivities to be constructed from the same sensing unit.

Gas sensing assembly

A gas sensor comprises a substrate on which are mounted three cells. Each cell includes an interdigitated capacitor defined by a pair of comb structure, electrically conductive tracks with the fingers of the combs interleaved. The tracks of each capacitor are covered by an insulating and chemically inert protective coating of an electrolyte. A monitor monitors one of a resistive component and a capacitive component of the relative dielectric constant of the electrolyte independently of the other component.

Gas sensor

Gas generating apparatus comprises an electrochemical cell having gas generating (2) and counter electrodes (3) with an intervening body of electrolyte (9). Current passing between the electrodes causes the generation of gas at the gas generating electrode. A first membrane (24) permeable to gas but substantially impermeable to the electrolyte is positioned sufficiently close to the gas generating electrode (2) that gas generated by the gas generating electrode diffuses through the electrolyte and out through the membrane under the influence of a gas concentration gradient, substantially without forming bubbles in the electrolyte and irrespective of the orientation of the apparatus.

Gas generating apparatus

An electro-chemical cell for quantitatively detecting an acidic or an alkaline gas, e.g. carbon dioxide, includes a sensing electrode 9 which is connected to a top cap 12 by a contact strip 8 and is accessible to the gas to be tested through a hole 13. The electrode 9 comprises an electro-chemical couple whose potential is pH-dependent (e.g. silver/silver oxide for carbon dioxide) the active material being supported by a nickel gauze to give good current collection. A counter electrode 2 without significant gas access is immersed in an electrolyte 3 whose pH is such that it will change following adsorption of the gas being tested for. A wicking separator 7 ensures an electrolytic path between the two electrodes. The components are contained within a metal can 1, the top cap 12 being held by folding over the rim 5. An insulating grommet 6 is fitted between the two electrodes. When using silver/silver oxide for the sensing electrode 9, the counter electrode may be of the same material and the electrolyte may be potassium carbonate. The current flowing between the electrodes is a measure of the concentration of gas being detected. A reference electrode 14 may also be included.

A gas sensor cell assembly has planar electrodes separated by a planar hydrophilic wick which extends through the electrode into an electrolyte expansion chamber where it contacts an electrolyte. The cell is extremely compact and operates in all orientations.
