A modular adsorption plant comprises one or more transportable cargo containers which hold the various adsorbent beds, pumping apparatus and so on which comprise the plant. The containers are easily transportable, and may be rapidly assembled in modular fashion to produce a large capacity plant.

Adsorption apparatus

A multi-bed PSA pressure vessel includes a hollow tubular body having one or more end plates releasably secured thereto. Secured to the end plate(s) are pipes which extend along the interior of the hollow tubular body. Each of the pipes terminates at a location along the length of the tubular body different from the remaining pipes. In a preferred embodiment, a plurality of perforated spacing flanges are secured to the pipe and some adjacent flanges defining between them a space for receiving adsorbing sieve material.

PSA systems

Air is supplied along a pipeline to an apparatus for separating an oxygen-enriched gas stream from the air by vacuum swing adsorption. The oxygen-enriched gas stream is supplied to a burner which fires into a furnace. A hot gas stream leaves the furnace through an outlet. Steam is raised from the hot gas in a waste heat boiler. Steam so raised flows through one or more of the eductors to draw through a pipeline the vacuum necessary for the operation of the vacuum swing adsorption apparatus.

Air separation

A vacuum swing adsorption apparatus for separating a gas mixture includes a pipeline along which the vacuum is able to be drawn. The apparatus is provided with a plurality of eductors each connected to the pipeline 6 and in parallel with the other eductor respective stop valves. The stop valves are arranged and operable so as to select the number of eductors in communication with the pipeline. Thus the degree of vacuum to which the apparatus is subjected may be varied.

Gas separation

A container (10) for the storage of perishable foodstuffs is chilled by means of a liquefied gas comprising a mixture of oxygen and nitrogen which when totally vaporised has an oxygen concentration of between 15 and 22%, the remaining concentration being substantially of nitrogen. Such an atmosphere is breathable, and hence avoids the problems associated with non breathable chilling atmospheres.

Storage of perishable foodstuffs

A pressure swing adsorption apparatus (10) is provided with actuator air via a reservoir (40) which draws its supply either from one or more of the process vessels (12) after it has been dried thereby or directly from the system compressor (32). Controls are provided to ensure actuator air is preferentially drawn from the dried source and for ensuring instrument air is available even on start up of the apparatus.

Pressure swing adsorption apparatus valve activation

A method of treating a material with ozone including the steps of passing oxygen rich gas from a PSA plant 2 through an ozonizer 4 and then passing the ozonized oxygen thus formed directly back to the PSA plant where the ozone is adsorbed in a bed of silica gel contained within a vessel. During the desorption step nitrogen adsorbed in a bed of zeolite also located in the vessel desorbs the ozone from the bed of silica gel and a nitrogen-ozone gas leaves the PSA plant via a line in the feed end. The material is treated with the nitrogen-ozone gas.

Treating materials with ozone

During a purge step of a PSA plant the waste gas being vented is analyzed to identify when a preselected volume of the waste gas contains purge gas after which the purge step is stopped.
