A circulatory assist system is disclosed, the system including an implantable electrical device having an electric motor, an implantable controller connected to the implantable electrical device, and an implantable power source connected to the controller for supplying power to the controller. The controller is attachable to a first side of a percutaneous connector. A second side of the percutaneous connector, opposite to the first side, allows external connectivity to said controller.

A TET system is operable to vary an amount of power transmitted from an external power supply to an implantable power unit in accordance with a monitored condition of the implantable power unit. The amount of power supplied to the implantable power unit for operating a pump, for example, can be varied in accordance with a cardiac cycle, so as to maintain the monitored condition in the power circuit within a desired range throughout the cardiac cycle.

Method and apparatus for applying asymmetric biphasic truncated

A process is provided for programming a device implanted in a patient from an external programming unit. A first access signal is transmitted, from an external source to the implant, to enable a computer within the implant to receive a second access signal. A second access signal is transmitted, from the external source to the implant, to enable the computer to receive and store programming signals representing data. The computer is inhibited from storing the programming signals unless both the first access signal and the second access signal have been received in sequence.

Method for externally programming a device implanted in a patient

For inbound data transmission a carrier signal is gated by the external programmer to transmit bursts of discrete numbers of cycles. The carrier is picked up by an implanted telemetry coil. The bursts are amplified and decoded by 'missing pulse' detection. Outbound telemetry is synchronized with the external constant carrier in a similar manner by loading the coil for discrete numbers of cycles. In the preferred embodiment, within an eight cycle bit period, two cycles of 64 kHz carrier represent '0' while a six cycle burst represents '1', to achieve a two-way data transmission rate of 8000 bits per second.

Biomedical implant with high speed, low power two-way telemetry

A system and process are provided for commanding a device implanted in a patient from an external command unit. A selected routine to be generated in response to a command signal from the external command unit is stored. A first access signal is transmitted from the command unit to the implant, to enable a computer within the implant to receive a command signal. A command signal is transmitted, from the command unit, to operate the selected routine. The operation of the selected routine is inhibited unless both the first access signal and the command signal have been generated.
