Systems and methods are disclosed for use with Implantable Medical Devices (IMD) such as Implantable Stimulator Devices. The system includes a permanent magnet which can be used to reset the IMD (such as during an emergency) and to place the IMD in a pairing mode to establish communications with an external device. An external device paired to the IMD can be used to place the IMD in an MRI mode that renders the IMD safe during a Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scan. In the event that the external device is unavailable to cause the IMD to exit the MRI mode, the bar magnet can also be used in the MRI mode to pair the IMD with another external device.

Programming of pairing and MRI modes in an implantable medical device system

An advertising algorithm is disclosed which operates in an Implantable Medical Device (IMD) to adjust an interval at which the IMD will transmit advertising data packets to an external device able to connect with the IMD. When a communication session between the IMD and an external device is terminated, the advertising algorithm will issue advertising data packets at a higher rate for a set duration. This will allow the external device to connect more quickly with the IMD in a next communication session. After the set duration, when it may be assumed that the external device is less likely to connect with the IMD, the algorithm reduces that rate at which advertising data packets are issued, which saves power in the IMD.

An optical stimulation system includes a light source configured to produce light for optical stimulation; a light monitor; an optical lead coupled, or coupleable, to the light source and the light monitor; and a control module coupled, or coupleable, to the light source and the light monitor. The control module includes a memory, and a processor coupled to the memory and configured for receiving a request for verification or measurement of a light output value; in response to the request, receiving, from the light monitor, a measurement of light generated by the light source; and, based on the measurement, reporting a response to the request.

An example may include the use of a therapy patterning system that allows significant freedom to program therapy patterns using arbitrary shapes and functions. For such patterning to be implemented, a physician may identify a condition needing new and/or alternative therapy options, link the identified condition one or more therapy parameters, program, test and assess the therapy. The process may include multiple iterations to address an initial condition and then to mitigate side effects of the initial therapy. Some embodiments comprises devices configured to deliver combinations of therapy patterns to accomplish at least first and second therapeutic purposes.
