Gears, gear arrangements and gas turbine engines

A gear train comprising: an input shaft; a first sun gear coupled to the input shaft; a plurality of first planet gears engaging the first sun gear; a first ring gear engaging the plurality of first planet gears; and a first planet carrier coupled to the plurality of first planet gears; a second sun gear coupled to the input shaft; a plurality of second planet gears engaging the second sun gear; a second ring gear engaging the plurality of second planet gears; and a second planet carrier coupled to the plurality of second planet gears; and an output member coupled to the first planet carrier at a first torque transfer location and coupled to the second planet carrier at a second torque transfer location, different to the first torque transfer location.

Gear trains

An actuation arrangement for effecting actuation of pivotable vane, for example, variable inlet guide vane in gas turbine engine. The actuation arrangement includes an actuator having a support plate and pivotable plate. The pivotable plate is fixedly connected to pivotable vane and pivotable plate and pivotable vane are pivotable about a pivot axis. The actuator further includes at least one actuation element having a length extending from support plate to proximal a transverse edge portion of pivotable plate substantially perpendicular to pivot axis. The or each actuation element is fixedly connected to each of the support and pivotable plates and formed of a material that changes dimension upon application of external energy. Thus, upon application of external energy, for example, heat, a change in length of the or each actuation element occurs such that change in length effects pivoting of pivotable plate and pivotable vane about the pivot axis.

Actuation arrangement

A valve arrangement including a valve body and a valve seat each having an opposed surface, the valve arrangement also includes a high-frequency cyclic actuator to move the valve body with respect to the valve seat to bring the opposed surfaces into and out of abutment, characterised in that the opposed surface of at least one of the valve body and the valve seat includes a resiliently displaceable surface.

Valve

A fluid conduit for a gas turbine engine. The conduit includes a superelastic material such as TNTZ or Ti2448. The conduit is installed such that at least part of the conduit is subject to a stress which lies in one of a superelastic and a plastic region of the material in use.

Superelastic fluid conduit for a gas turbine engine

A hollow cylindrical rotary bearing shaft for a planet gear of an epicyclic gear train, has a cylindrical outer surface accommodating the planet gear, and a wall thickness. The wall thickness of the bearing shaft varies circumferentially around a diameter of the bearing shaft so as to produce a pre-determined circumferential variation in the wall thickness.

A method of determining the axial load on load-sharing thrust bearings including: providing first and second thrust bearings, each including an inner race and an outer race supported by at least one resilient element; applying a test axial load to each of the first and second thrust bearings to elastically deform the at least one resilient element so as to axially displace the outer race; determining the test axial displacement of each outer race to obtain calibration data comprising values of axial load versus axial displacement; applying an in-service axial load to the first and second thrust bearings to elastically deform the resilient elements so as to axially displace the respective outer races; measuring the in-service axial displacement of each outer race; and based on the measured in-service axial displacements, inferring from the calibration data the values of the in-service axial loads on the first and second thrust bearings.

Bearing arrangement and method

A bearing arrangement includes: first and second thrust bearings, arranged on a shaft and including respective first and second pressure faces; and a hydraulic connection, connecting the first and second thrust bearings and having a non-compressible fluid. Applying a shaft thrust load axially moves the first thrust bearing so that the first pressure face displaces the non-compressible fluid from the first thrust bearing to the second thrust bearing so as to apply a reaction force to the second pressure face, in order that the thrust load is shared between the first and second thrust bearings.

Bearing arrangement

A turbomachine casing assembly including a casing adapted to encase an aerofoil structure, the aerofoil structure having a tip, a leading edge and a trailing edge, the casing substantially surrounding the tip of the aerofoil structure, wherein the casing has a set-back portion extending from a position in the region of the leading edge or the trailing edge of the aerofoil structure part way towards a position in the region of the respective other edge and set back from the remainder of the casing away from the aerofoil structure, such that the set-back portion permits a flow over a corresponding portion of the tip of the aerofoil structure.

Turbomachine casing assembly

A gas turbine engine variable area exhaust nozzle has a plurality of first and second movable members arranged circumferentially around a fan casing extending in downstream. The first and second movable members alternate around the variable area nozzle. During cruise conditions the first and second movable members are in un-actuated positions. At take off conditions the first movable members are in an actuated position and the second movable members are in the un-actuated position. At top of climb conditions the first movable members are in the un-actuated position and the second movable members are in an actuated position. The first movable members move radially outwardly from the un-actuated position to the actuated position and the second movable members move radially inwardly from the un-actuated position to the actuated position.

Gas turbine engine variable area exhaust nozzle

A bearing arrangement is disclosed. The bearing arrangement includes first and second bearings, with each bearing including a respective support element and a respective set of rolling elements and defining a respective load path extending through the respective support element and rolling elements. The support elements are coupled such that a load applied to either support element is transmitted through both the first and second load paths. The arrangement further includes a pair of superelastic titanium alloy elements located in the respective load paths to provide resilient movement between the bearings when a load is applied to the bearing arrangement.

A bearing arrangement comprises: first and second thrust bearings, each including an inner race which is disposed on a shaft and an outer race which is supported by at least one resilient element. Applying a shaft thrust load elastically deforms the resilient elements so as to axially displace the respective outer races in order that the thrust load is shared between the first and second thrust bearings.

A tip clearance control device adapted to control the clearance of a rotating aerofoil structure with a surrounding casing portion, and a method of controlling the tip clearance of a rotating aerofoil structure with a surrounding casing portion. The device includes a member operatively connected to the casing portion; the member having at least a first configuration in which the casing portion is at a first radial position and a second configuration in which the casing portion is at a second radial position, wherein the configuration of the member is controlled by magnetic flux in a magnetic circuit which includes at least one ferromagnetic element including ferromagnetic material, where the configuration of the member is responsive to the temperature of the ferromagnetic element.

Tip clearance control device

An apparatus for pre-stressing a component, the apparatus includes means to direct a beam of radiation in a path through a medium adjacent to the component between a pair of electrodes to produce ionisation in the path through the medium and means to produce an electrical discharge between the pair of electrodes in the path through the medium to produce a pressure pulse in the medium adjacent to the component without the electrical discharge directly contacting the component, the pressure pulse impacting a surface of the component to produce a region of compressive residual stress within the component.
