An entity-based platform stores a database of entity mentions and related, entity-based information obtained by processing text in a corpus of documents such as content from a public network or content from a document management system. The platform may analyze changes to a previously-processed document in order to align mentions in the modified document to mentions in a prior document and/or to identify new mentions not present in the previously-processed document. As the underlying documents in the corpus change over time, this advantageously permits sustained use of knowledge graphs and other entity-based representations or analysis linked to specific entity mentions.

Stable identification of entity mentions

Connections among two different entities are identified by processing a collection of documents to identify one or more documents that contain co-occurring mentions of each of the two different entities. This relationship may be graphically displayed in a user interface with an icon or the like for each of the two entities, along with a graphical link interconnecting the entities. The graphical link can be an active element of the user interface that responds to user interactions by providing access to evidence within the collection of documents that substantiates the connection between the two entities. In one aspect, a search input form field in a user interface may be used to explicitly request documents that substantiate a relationship between two entities. In another aspect, a user may ground entity mentions by explicitly selecting documents that mention an entity of interest.

Systems and method for investigating relationships among entities

A journal of operations persistently stores a collection of user and machine interactions with documents, concepts within documents, and relationships/mentions among such documents and concepts. A knowledge graph or other visual expression can be used to provide an interactive format for user interactions with this information, and to visually display the accumulated information in the journal of operations on user's device of choice. Such accumulations are often called aggregations or aggregates. Both human users and computer users such as automated recommendation engines, machine learning algorithms, and the like can interact with the journal of operations to facilitate computer-assisted discovery and organization of data around a topic of interest to the human user. The resulting journal of operations and aggregations of those operations such as a knowledge graph or other visual expression(s) also provides a useful medium for sharing knowledge with other users and collaborating on investigation of a topic.

Under one aspect, a computer-implemented method includes obtaining one or more media objects having location-related content in response to a search query, wherein the location-related content represents one or more locations corresponding to one or more spatial references in the one or more media objects, obtaining respective spatial thumbnails for the one or more spatial references, obtaining respective summaries of the one or more media objects, obtaining a respective one or more hyperlinks referencing to the one or more media objects, and causing to display for the one or more media objects the respective spatial thumbnails, the respective summaries, and the respective one or more hyperlinks.

Systems and methods for spatial thumbnails and companion maps for media objects

A user interface of an entity-centric knowledge discovery system presents an entity profile including a mix of structured and unstructured data relating to an entity. As a user refines the entity profile based on information gathered from various sources, the changing entity profile can be used as a substantially continuously updating query to search, retrieve, and rank new and pertinent information specifically relevant to the profiled entity. The platform described herein provide an active loop for refining an entity description and searching for additional information in which human input and machine-based algorithms can cooperate to more quickly build a comprehensive description of an entity of interest.

Entity-centric knowledge discovery

Under one aspect, a computer-implemented method of displaying information about a media object, the media object being associated with location-related content corresponding to a location, includes receiving a request to display a representation of the media object; in response to the request, obtaining a summary of the media object; in response to the request, obtaining a spatial thumbnail of the media object, the spatial thumbnail comprising an image of a spatial domain encompassing the location; and simultaneously displaying both the summary of the media object and the spatial thumbnail on a visual display.

Under one aspect, an interface program stored on a computer-readable medium causes a computer system with a display device to perform the functions of: displaying an image of a region of a metric vector space; obtaining a set of pixel extents in the image that contain apparent textual annotations; for each pixel extent of the set, obtaining a confidence score that the pixel extent actually contains a textual annotation; and displaying the set of pixel extents in a ranked list based on the corresponding confidence scores. In some embodiments, the program further causes the computer system to perform the functions of, for at least one pixel extent of the set, at least one of automatically generating a text string based on the apparent textual annotation, and accepting user input entering a text string based on the apparent textual annotation.

Systems and methods for obtaining and using information from map images

A computer-implemented method involving a corpus of documents. The method includes accepting search criteria from a user, the search criteria including a domain identifier identifying a domain and including a filter condition specifying a geometric relationship between co-referenced locations; in response to accepting the search criteria from the user, searching among the corpus of documents to identify a set of documents, wherein each document among the set of documents contains anywhere within the document location-related information that refers to a location within the domain and satisfies the filter condition, and wherein the set of documents only includes documents that satisfy the filter condition; and identifying to the user the documents in the set of documents.

Methods of systems using geographic meta-metadata in information retrieval and document displays

A computer-implemented method involving: gathering a set of files from one or more computers; analyzing the set of files to identify a plurality of files among the set of files that contain spatial information; storing information about the plurality of files, the stored information indicating that the identified files contain spatial information; and causing to be displayed to a user an indication that the identified files contain spatial information.
