A method of setting actuator position of a variable geometry turbine linked to drive a compressor for a compression ignition engine using exhaust gas recirculation. The method includes detecting an engine transient event; determining current mass air flow through the compressor and exhaust temperature; resetting variable geometry turbine position to maximize mass air flow through the compressor; adding the maximum allowable quantity of fuel; determining exhaust temperature increase; adjusting exhaust pressure to allow an increase in mass air flow and exhaust temperature; and returning to the resetting step until a limit is reached.

Control method for variable geometry exhaust turbine

In response to activation of a compression release brake when a motor vehicle having a turbocharged internal combustion engine is operating at some elevation above sea level and a turbocharger compressor is operating in a region of an operating map which is creating boost air in an engine intake manifold which would cause the compression release brake to decelerate the vehicle more slowly at that elevation than it would at sea level for the same operating conditions of the vehicle and engine other than altitude, the compression release brake decelerates the vehicle less slowly by causing an exhaust gas recirculation system to reduce at least one of a) mass of exhaust diverted to an intake system of the engine and b) cooling of the diverted exhaust.

Turbocharger operation to increase brake effectiveness

An exhaust gas turbocharger housing () for an engine includes a main turbine housing portion () and a throat portion () defining an exhaust gas passageway () that is in upstream fluid communication with the main turbine housing. The exhaust passageway () communicates exhaust gases (EG) to the main turbine housing portion (). A flow divider () generally bisects the exhaust gas passageway () forming a first inlet passageway (A) and a second inlet passageway (B). A flow hole () is disposed through the flow divider () for permitting the fluid communication of exhaust gas (EG) from the first inlet passageway (A) to the second inlet passageway (B).

An improvement to a diesel engine cylinder head disclosed in U.S. Pat. No. 4,860,700, wherein the improvement comprises any of: a by-pass opening formed in partition walls thereof; a spine density of less than about five spines per square inch; spacing an inner chamber wall surface thereof with respect to an inner fire-face wall surface thereof between about 0.75 inches and 0.25 inches; coolant by-pass ports thereof having a cross-section of between about 0.1875 inches and 0.0625 inches; and a radial rib thereof extending complete and free of any rib opening.

An improved diesel engine water pump includes three main features that aid in extending the maintenance-free life of the pump. The impeller shaft is carried by tapered roller shaft support bearings of which the impeller bearing has a floating outer race that is urged axially by a preload spring to provide a prescribed axial preload that maintains concentricity of the shaft with the axis and prolongs bearing life. An improved oil seal combines an oil slinger, a stationary deflector and a lip oil seal with a return passage to the engine to more effectively limit oil leakage from the pump. An improved water seal includes pressurized water jets fed from the pump volute that flush wear particles from the water seal surface and increase water seal life. Further details of these features are also disclosed.

A system for a turbocharged internal combustion engine includes an engine having a charge inlet connected to the compressor outlet and an exhaust outlet connected to the turbine inlet for driving the turbocharger with hot exhaust gas and supplying compressed air to the engine for combustion. A bypass duct connects the compressor outlet to the turbine inlet for diverting a portion of the compressed air around the engine to the turbine inlet or exhaust. A control device selectively controls the diversion of air. An operating method for the system involves controlling peak cylinder firing pressure and/or maximum turbine inlet temperature, optionally with exhaust NOx and smoke in order to limit these variables to acceptable limits with a minimum of operational limitations.

Diesel engine water pump with improved water seal

A turbocharger rotor includes a turbine wheel, a compressor wheel, a shaft extending between the turbine and compressor wheels for rotation together about an axis, and connecting means including two pairs of non-locking cones. In a preferred embodiment, the cones include external cones on the turbine and compressor wheels and internal cones on the ends of the shaft. The non-locking cones are centered on the axis with the external and internal cones drivingly engaging one another to align and connect the wheels with the shaft. A long bolt fastener extends through the compressor wheel and the shaft to engage the turbine wheel and hold the rotor components in assembly. An alternative embodiment includes engaging radial surfaces outward of the cones. The radial surfaces share the transmission of torque through the connecting means and assist in stabilizing the joints between the shaft and the connected wheels. Additional features are disclosed.

Conically jointed turbocharger rotor

A turbocharger rotor includes a turbine wheel, a compressor wheel, a shaft extending between the turbine and compressor wheels for rotation together about an axis, and connecting means. The connecting means include first and second joints including alignment couplings joining opposite ends of the shaft with adjoining inner ends of the compressor wheel and the turbine wheel. The couplings are configured to coaxially align and drivingly engage the shaft with the compressor and turbine wheels. A fastener rod extends through the shaft and the compressor wheel, engaging the turbine wheel to retain the rotor components together under compressive load. The rod is resiliently stretchable to limit changes in the retaining force changes in axial dimensions during operating and stationary conditions. Additional features and variations are disclosed.

Turbocharger rotor with alignment couplings

An engine turbocharger includes a thermal isolation connection between a rotor and compressor section support and an exhaust section including an exhaust duct attached to the rotor support. The connection includes spring biased wear pads allowing sliding motion at one or more interfaces between the exhaust duct and the rotor support to accommodate relative radial thermal growth. Radial key and slot guides between the exhaust duct and rotor support maintain axial alignment of the connected components during relative radial motion at the connecting interfaces.

Turbocharger thermal isolation connection

An engine turbocharger includes a turbine inlet scroll for conducting exhaust gas from a laterally offset position to the annular inlet of a turbine wheel. An outer wall defines a generally S-shaped passage connecting an inlet flange with concentric annular outlet flanges aligned on laterally spaced parallel axes. An inner wall positioned near the outlet end of the turbine inlet duct defines an annular passage portion for distribution of exhaust gas to the turbine inlet. Three annularly spaced struts or vanes support the inner wall within the outer wall slightly upstream from the outlet flanges of the scroll. A straight vane is positioned on the central plane of the turbine inlet scroll to support the wall with the least possible interference with gas flow. Second and third vanes are positioned approximately 110 degrees clockwise and counterclockwise respectively from the first vane and are formed as aerodynamically curved vanes which assist in redirecting the gas flow in an axial direction toward the annular outlet of the scroll to provide relatively even distribution of gas to the turbine inlet.

Turbine inlet scroll

A turbocharger includes a rotor having coaxial turbine and compressor wheels. In a preferred embodiment, a turbine inlet scroll conducts exhaust gas toward the turbine wheel and an exhaust duct carries exhaust gas away from the turbine wheel. A turbine nozzle ring coupled between the inlet scroll and the exhaust duct defines an annular passage including angled stator blades and vanes that direct gas angularly against energy converting blades of the turbine wheel. Ring seals at outer and inner edges of the nozzle ring inlet end seal the inlet end against loss of gas pressure. They may also form springs that axially bias the nozzle ring against a stop to fix the axial position of the nozzle ring. The nozzle ring is centered by radial guides at the outlet end which may include at least three radial keys on the nozzle ring engaging mating guide slots connected with the exhaust duct. The guides maintain axial alignment of the nozzle ring and an integral shroud with the rotor axis while accommodating relative thermal growth of the connected components.
