A method, and apparatus for transferring a fluid to a sterile field includes the use of a sterile enclosure () housing a syringe (). The enclosure () is made in two parts, and allows the syringe () to be operated while it is in the enclosure. When it is desired to pass the fluids to the sterile field, the enclosure is separated into at least two parts to allow the syringe to be removed. This removal of the syringe is done such that the user in the non-sterile field does not touch the syringe. Thus, the syringe, and fluid therein are easily transferred to the sterile field.

A snow plow blade includes a selectively extendable barrier attachment. The barrier attachment includes a base pivotally secured to the plow blade and secured to one end of each of a number of flexible members that are also engaged by a retraction mechanism for the barrier attachment that is disposed on the blade. The retraction mechanism is used to automatically retract and extend the flexible members as the base is pivoted between a retracted position and a deployed position on the blade. In the deployed position, the flexible members form a wall that prevents snow collected or diverted by the plow blade from passing through the barrier attachment. The barrier attachment may also include a separate deployment mechanism that operates to move the base between the retracted and deployed positions, and a brace used to hold the barrier attachment in position when in the deployed position.

The rotator has a frame (52) with a person support member (66) rotatably mounted on the frame at an axis (68) coplanar with the top (504) of the bed and perpendicular to the side. The patient uses a controller (94) to rotate himself on the person support member between vertical and horizontal orientations as desired while he remains on his side.

A centrifuge is capable of holding a sample container in selected orientations, either during or after centrifugation, to drain supernatants between two or more chambers of the container. The draining may be gravity or centrifugal draining. This allows an automated process to subject a sample to a first physical or chemical treatment to produce a first supernatant, the first supernatant to be subjected to a second physical or chemical treatment, and a second supernatant to be separated from a desired component.

Automatic multiple-decanting centrifuge

An improved cannula with needle which provides improved support between the cannula and the syringe. The cannula provides a base member which is substantially perpendicular to the wall member forming the edge of the barrel. In this manner, lateral forces applied to the barrel of the syringe are efficiently transferred to the cannula without causing undue force upon the syringe's nozzle or the side portion of the barrel wall. Further, the cannula attaches to the outside of the syringe nozzle. Preferably, this attachment is accomplished by a thread which engages the exterior of the nozzle as the cannula is twisted onto the nozzle. Another embodiment of the invention allows the needle portion to be attached to the nozzle through a luer-lock arrangement and then the support member applied over the needle arrangement. Still another embodiment creates a locking mechanism to the nozzle which is secured both at the inside and the outside of the nozzle.

A liquid handling apparatus is employed for washing a coated microtiter plate well. The apparatus includes a probe with a bent outlet which is employed for directing the wash current against the sidewall of the well and for creating swirling current of wash liquid upon such sidewall.

A blood washing device is employed for recovering shed blood or other sources of blood and preparing packed red cells therefrom. The device employs a gravity sedimentation procedure but achieves a shortened washing period by using an aggregating reagent for aggregating or agglomerating the red cells so as to increase their sedimentation velocity during the gravity sedimentation. The wash period is further shortened by employing a vessel with a flat shallow configuration for shortening the sedimentation path length of the aggregated red cells. A non-turbulant removal of the resultant broad shallow layer of sedimented red cells is achieved by carefully tilting the vessel after the sedimentation step so as to induce the sedimented red cells to slide or shift into a funnel configuration within the vessel. After the red cells have shifted into a funnel configuration, they are allowed to stand in that configuration so as undergo further concentration. As the red cells become packed, an elutriation of the intercellular fluids occurs. The resultant packed red cells are then carefully drained from the bottom of the funnel configuration for reinfusion into the patient. The period of the wash cycle is sufficiently short that a patient's shed blood can often be recovered during an operation and then washed and reinfused into the same patient during the same operation or shortly thereafter. Autologous transfusions are useful in cases where there is a shortage of blood or where the safety of donor blood is in question.

An apparatus for washing pellets of magnetic particles magnetically bound to the bottom of a test tube employs a liquid handling probe having an aspiration channel with a forked inlet for positioning the probe onto the periapical region of the test tube for optimizing both the aspiration and expression of liquids. While contacting the periapical region of the test tube, the forked inlet may aspirate liquid adjacent to the pellet without contacting the magnetic particles. Furthermore, the contact between the forked inlet and the periapical region of the test tube, serves to position the outlet of the liquid channel directly over the pellet for dislodging and resuspending the magnetically bound pellet with a forceful stream of wash liquid.

Leakage from the manifold of a manifold type multi-channel dispenser, aspirator, or washer may be diminished by employing siphon shaped pipettes and backsipping liquid from the long leg of such siphon shaped pipettes after each use of the device. The siphon shaped pipettes may be attached to the top-most part of the manifold so as to facilitate the purging of bubbles therefrom.

The immunobead aspirator reduces the amount of carry over liquid which remains within a test tube or other immunoassay vessel after an aspiration procedure. When the immunobead aspirator lifts up the immunobead during the aspiration procedure, the immunobead contacts an array of protuberances within an inverted bowl from which a vacuum is drawn. The array of protuberances define a hollow which exceeds the size of the immunobead. Accordingly, at any given time, the immunobead makes limited contact with only a portion of the protuberances. This reduces the amount of liquid which is trapped within points of contact between the lifted immunobead and the aspiration device and reduces the amount of carry over liquid.

A centrifuge having an automatic dispensing rotor is employed for pelleting material and automatically decanting supernatant liquid by means of gravity drainage. The automatic decanting rotor employs a magnetically activated lock mechanism for locking swinging buckets in an elevated position while the rotor is at speed. When the rotor is brought to rest, the swinging buckets do not pivot to their rest position but are sustained in their elevated position by means of the magnetically activated lock. Liquids are automatically decanted from the swinging buckets when the rotor is brought to rest while the swinging buckets are sustained within their elevated position.
