The present invention relates to a matte surface film comprising: a base layer comprising a polyolefin; and a matte surface layer comprising a blend of high molecular weight high density polyethylene (HMWHD PE) with at least one incompatible polyolefin. The incompatible polyolefin may be ethylene propylene (EP) copolymers, ethylene butylene propylene (EBP) terpolymers or polypropylene (PP) homopolymers, such as metallocene catalyzed isotactic polypropylene (m-iPP) or metallocene catalyzed syndiotatic polypropylene (m-sPP). The matte surface layer may additionally contain a low molecular weight high density polyethylene or a medium molecular weight high density polyethylene. The film possesses an improved matte appearance and may be used for packaging and label applications.

A block-resistant film is described which comprises a core layer of a thermoplastic polymer having a first side and a second side; a functional layer which is printable or sealable or treatable for printing or sealing is on the first side of the core layer, and a block-resistant layer is on the second side of the core layer. The block-resistant layer comprises a thermoplastic polymer and an amount of a polydialkylsiloxane, based upon the entire weight of the block-resistant layer, sufficient to inhibit blocking of the block-resistant layer to the functional layer when they are in contact. The surface of the block-resistant layer is flame treated or corona treated.

The invention is directed to a thermoplastic film having a matte surface comprising: a core layer of a thermoplastic polymer, the core layer having a first side and a second side, and a matte surface layer on a first side of the core layer, the matte surface layer comprising a blend of (i) a copolymer of ethylene and propylene or a terpolymer of ethylene, propylene and a C.sub.4 to C.sub.10 alpha-olefin or a propylene homopolymer; (ii) an ethylene polymer and (iii) a polydialkylsiloxane selected from the group consisting of (1) a polydialkylsiloxane having a number average molecular weight above about 250,000, typically above about 300,000 and a viscosity of above about 10,000,000 cSt, usually ranging from about 15,000,000 to about 20,000,000 cSt., and (2) a polydialkylsiloxane functionalized polyolefin. The external surface of the matte surface layer demonstrates a coefficient of friction ranging from about 0.1 to about 0.85 as determined by ASTM D1894 with an 18.14 kg (4 lb.) pound sled.

Matte surface film

A block-resistant film is described which comprises a core layer of a thermoplastic polymer having a first side and a second side; a functional layer which is printable or sealable or treatable for printing or sealing is on the first side of the core layer, and a block-resistant layer is on the second side of the core layer. The block-resistant layer comprises a thermoplastic polymer and an amount of a polydialkylsiloxane, based upon the entire weight of the block-resistant layer, sufficient to inhibit blocking of the block-resistant layer to the functional layer when they are in contact and which polydialkylsiloxane deposits silicon onto the functional layer but the amount of silicon deposited is not substantially detrimental to the printing function or the sealing function.

Block resistant film

A multi layer film having enhanced barrier properties against transmission of oxygen and water vapor is provided. The multi layer film includes a polypropylene base layer, with a high density polyethylene layer on at least one surface of the polypropylene base layer. The polyethylene layer includes a surface which has been subjected to plasma treatment with a hydroxyl-donating material such as a methanol. The film further includes a metal layer deposited on the plasma treated surface, such as a layer of vacuum deposited aluminum. Multi layer films according to the present invention are particularly useful as packaging films for food products.

Enhanced barrier vacuum metallized films

A method of producing a multilayer polymeric film is accomplished through the vapor deposition of a barrier coating onto an ethylene vinyl alcohol copolymer layer, which is adhered to a polymeric substrate. A multilayer polymeric film exhibiting barrier characteristics is also accomplished through the use of an ethylene vinyl alcohol copolymer layer between a vapor deposited barrier coating and a polymeric substrate.

Barrier films having vapor coated EVOH surfaces

A carbon coated polymeric film is produced by Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition. An amorphous nylon layer having at least one exposed high energy surface is adhered to a polymeric substrate. Carbon is thereafter deposited on the exposed high energy surface by vapor deposition of a decomposable precursor in the presence of plasma.

Barrier films having carbon-coated high energy surfaces

A pressure-sensitive coating for reducing seal is applied to an exposed surface of a pressure-activated adhesive. The coating is preferably deposited on the exposed surface of the adhesive by decomposition of a decomposable precursor in the presence of plasma. The employed decomposable precursor may include a hydrocarbon gas whereby an amorphous layer of interconnected carbon atoms is deposited on the surface of the adhesive, or a silicone-containing compound whereby the deposited coating is an amorphous layer of interconnected silicone and oxygen atoms.

Protective coating for pressure-activated adhesives

A process for thermoforming thermo-plastics including a random copolymer of polypropylene and polyethylene. The process including stretching in at least one direction, a film or sheet containing polypropylene and polyethylene random copolymer to partially orient the sheet sufficiently as to reduce sag during thermoforming and thermoforming the stretched sheet.

Process for producing thermoformable polypropylene films and sheets

A non-symmetrically layered, highly opaque, biaxially oriented polymer film with a core containing numerous microscopic voids and at least about 1% by weight of opacifying compounds; a first skin layer on one surface of the core containing up to about 12% by weight of inorganic particulate material; and a second skin layer on the other surface of the core.

High opacity film and method thereof

Films having a core of ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer (EVOH) sandwiched between polyolefin, e.g. polypropylene are coextruded so that the polyolefin also encapsulates the EVOH layer on the side edges. The films which can contain adhesive layers are oriented greater than 4 greater in the machines direction and greater than 7 greater in the transverse direction to give excellent oxygen and moisture barrier properties.

Biaxially oriented multilayer barrier films

A composite structure includes a polystyrene foam substrate bonded on at least one major surface to an oriented polypropylene film employing an acrylic adhesive composition. In addition to its other advantageous characteristics, the bond strength between the polystyrene foam and the oriented polypropylene film components of the composite structure is unusually high. The composite can be readily thermoformed into a variety of useful articles such as disposable cups, plates, cartons, containers, and the like.

An oriented multi-layer heat sealable film structure comprising a polyolefin film substrate, a layer of a linear very low density copolymer of ethylene and a C.sub.4 -C.sub.8 alpha olefin or a blend of the same with polypropylene. This structure can also have a primer layer on said copolymer or blend layer and a heat-sealable layer on said primer layer.

An oriented film structure comprising a polypropylene film having on at least one surface thereof a layer of a blend of (I) a linear low density copolymer of ethylene with a minor proportion of a C.sub.3 -C.sub.10 alpha olefin and (II) polypropylene.
