The invention provides methods of using beta glucans to treat conditions associated with bone loss or low bone density as well as methods for promoting bone growth in situations where enhanced bone growth is desirable. In the invention methods beta glucans are administered so as to enhance the development of osteoblasts and the inhibition of the development and recruitment of osteoclasts. The inhibition of the recruitment and development of osteoclasts, coupled with the enhancement of osteoblast maturation by beta glucans leads to decreased bone resorption and increased bone formation, making beta glucans ideal agents for the treatment of osteoporosis and other bone resorption diseases.

Methods of purifying beta glucans

A cleaning composition for treating and removing residue containing hydrocarbons and other flammable substances uses a mixture of one or more cleaning members containing quaternary salts, a chelator and a dispersant, mixed with water. The preferred cleaning members are tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide, tetrasodium ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid, benzethonium hydrochloride and 2-butoxyethanol. The chelator is tetrasodium salt ethylenediamine of tetraacetic acid, and the dispersant is polyvinyl alcohol. Optionally, the cleaner contains ethanol and isopropyl alcohol.

When uncured meat is stored, even for a relatively short time after cooking, it develops what is commonly referred to as warmed-over flavor (WOF). The present invention is drawn to, inhibiting WOF, and preserving (e.g. extending the shelf life of), uncured meat containing materials i.e. UMCM (for example, uncured meat per se or materials (e.g. foods) which include uncured meat) by combining said UMCM with an additive composition selected from the group consisting of, desferoxamine mesylate (also referred to as Desferal.RTM. mesylate or desferrioxamine), or N-carboxymethyl-chitosan.
