Disclosed herein are analgesic copper coordination compounds and a process for using them in the treatment of analgesia in animal bodies. The copper coordination compounds utilized are the reaction products of copper salts with: 1. carboxylic acids or their alkaline earth salts; 2. aromatic carboxylic acids or their alkaline earth salts; 3. heterocyclic carboxylic acids or their alkaline earth salts; 4. amino acids or their alkaline earth salts; 5. anthranilic acids or their alkaline earth salts; 6. salicylic acids or their alkaline earth salts; 7. acetylsalicylates or their alkaline earth salts; 8. arylacetic acids or their alkaline earth salts; 9. disubstituted aminodithiocarbamates, and mixtures of any of the above. The process disclosed comprises administering to animals, orally or parenterally, in controlled dosages, the aforementioned copper coordination compounds.

The present invention relates to copper complexes exhibiting superoxide dismutase-like activity in mammalian cells. The copper complexes, which act as superoxide radical (O.sub.2.sup.-) scavengers, are used in treating cancer by replacing the lost superoxide dismutase activity which characterizes tumor systems. The low molecular weight and lipid solubility of the copper complexes facilitate penetration of cell membranes. Depending upon the specific type of copper complex used, treatment may result in decreased tumor growth, increased survival of the host organism, decreased tumor metastasis or induced morphological differentiation of cancerous cells. The copper complexes used according to the invention include copper salicylate complexes, their solvates as well as mixtures thereof. A method for the treatment of cancer using these copper complexes is also disclosed.

Copper complex for treating cancer

Copper-dependent enzymes are required for normal brain development and function. Copper deficiency can result in pathological disorders accompanied by convulsive seizures or tremors in man and animals. The present invention is directed to a method for treating convulsions or epilepsy comprising administration of a therapeutically effective amount of an organic compound of copper having anticonvulsant activity. Those compounds include copper complexes of carboxylic acids, acylsalicylates, salicylates, amino acids, imines and known anticonvulsant and antiepileptic drugs.

Method for treating convulsions and epilepsy with organic copper

Copper-dependent enzymes are required for normal brain development and function. Copper deficiency can result in pathological disorders accompanied by convulsive seizures or tremors in man and animals. The present invention is directed to a method for treating convulsions or epilepsy comprising administration of a therapeutically effective amount of an organic compound of copper having anticonvulsant activity. These compounds include copper complexes of carboxylic acids, acylsalicylates, salicylates, amino acids, imines and known anticonvulsant and antiepileptic drugs.

Methods are described for using organic copper complexes or their solvates, which exhibit superoxide dismutase activity and act as superoxide radical scavengers, as radioprotectants to protect mammalian cells from damage caused by gamma- or x-irradiation. Treatment can result in the protection of normal tissues in cancer patients undergoing radiotherapy and in the protection of individuals who may be at risk with regard to hazardous effects of exposure to occupational or environmental ionizing radiation.
