This invention concerns a process for removing carbonyl-containing impurities from impure extractive distillation solvent such as a glycol, comprising: contacting the impure extractive distillation solvent with an acidic ion exchange resin. The purified extractive distillation solvent can be recycled for use as a solvent in an extractive distillation process that removes impurities from alkylene oxide. The extractive distillation solvent can be ethylene glycol monomethyl ether (EGME) used to purify propylene oxide.

Purification of solvents used for the purification of alkylene oxide

A process for purifying propylene oxide containing an unacceptable quantity of a poly (propylene oxide) polymer contaminant having a number average molecular weight of at least 50,000 and precursors having a number average molecular weight below 50,000. The process comprises contacting the propylene oxide with a sorbent selected from activated carbon, charcoal, and attapulgite for a time and under conditions sufficient to reduce the amount of the contaminant to acceptable levels, and thereafter recovering the purified propylene oxide product, wherein the propylene oxide is contacted with the sorbent at a temperature below 10&#xb0; C.

Purification of propylene oxide

A process for producing cyclohexane by benzene hydrogenation using a hydrogen source that contains impurities, such as carbon monoxide and/or light hydrocarbons, wherein a supported catalyst reduces benzene to cyclohexane and carbon monoxide to methane and water. Alkenes, such as ethylene, are also reduced to their alkane counterparts. Under the disclosed operating conditions, the process proceeds without deactivation of the catalyst, and without the formation of a significant amount of cracking products, such as methylcyclopentane.

Manufacture of cyclohexane from benzene and a hydrogen source containing impurities

A method for removing diethylhydroxylamine (DEHA) from butadiene streams that does not leave an excessive amount of residual contaminates in the isolated butadiene stream. The DEHA is removed from the butadiene streams by ion exchange resins, which efficiently remove DEHA from the butadiene streams without causing the accumulation of an excessive amount of residual contaminants. To prevent polymerization of the butadiene upon removal of the DEHA, tert-butylcatechol (TBC) may be added to the butadiene stream before or after DEHA removal. Fresh or spent ion exchange resins may be used. After removal from the butadiene stream, the isolated DEHA can then be easily concentrated, and disposed or recycled. A method for removing DEHA from hydrocarbon streams is also disclosed.

Removal of DEHA from butadiene streams

A process for producing substantially pure isobutylene containing relatively small amounts of higher oligomer byproducts. The process may employ a Y-zeolite catalyst having a silica to alumina ratio of less than or equal to about ten.

Process for producing isobutylene from tertiary butyl alcohol

Provided herein is a process for producing alkylene carbonates of ultra-high purity. According to the present invention, certain stages of traditional distillation of alkylene carbonate distillation are replaced by carbon treatment. Alkylene carbonates produced according to the invention have a color of less than 25 (Pt-Co), and are suitable for uses requiring ultra-pure alkylene carbonates.

Methods for decomposing esters and purifying alcohols

A tertiary butyl alcohol charge stock typically contaminated with from about 0.5 to about 2 wt. % of formates and peroxides, is passed through an oxygenates decomposition reactor containing a bed of a decomposition catalyst comprising rhodium, platinum, palladium or mixture thereof at a temperature of from about 100 to about 280.degree. C. to decompose the peroxides and formates, and to dehydrate a portion of the tertiary butyl alcohol to form isobutylene and water to thereby form a non-corrosive tertiary butyl alcohol feedstock that is substantially free from formates that is suitable for reaction with methanol in a methyl tertiary butyl ether etherification reactor to form a non-corrosive methyl tertiary butyl ether etherification reaction product from which methyl tertiary butyl ether can be recovered.

Methyl tertiary butyl ether is prepared from contaminated TBA by reactively distilling the contaminated TBA in a reactive distillation column to provide a lower boiling isobutylene fraction and a higher boiling aqueous TBA fraction, by distilling the higher boiling aqueous TBA fraction to provide a lower boiling TBA fraction, by charging the lower boiling isobutylene fraction, the lower boiling tertiary butyl alcohol fraction and methanol to an etherification reactor to form an etherification reaction product, by distilling the etherification reaction product to provide a lower boiling fraction containing isobutylene, methanol and methyl tertiary butyl ether by charging the lower boiling fraction to a finishing reactor to react the isobutylene and methanol contained therein to from additional MTBE and by recovering MTBE from the etherification reaction product and the isobutylene conversion product.

Method for the manufacture of methyl tertiary butyl ether from tertiary

A tertiary butyl alcohol feedstock is dehydrated to form isobutylene and water in a reactive distillation column having a reactive distillation section in the middle portion thereof containing a bed of a TBA dehydration catalyst and a substantially anhydrous lower boiling isobutylene fraction is recovered adjacent the top of the reactive distillation column and a higher boiling aqueous fraction is recovered adjacent the bottom of the reactive distillation column.

Use of reactive distillation in the dehydration of tertiary butyl alcohol

A process in which carbon is used to catalyze production of alkylene glycols from alkylene oxides and water. Using this process, carbon may be employed to selectively catalyze the hydrolysis of alkylene oxides, such as ethylene oxide, to monoalkylene gylcols, such as monoethylene glycol. Typically, activated carbon is employed. Suitable forms of activated carbon or other carbon material include powders, granulates, extruded shapes, or mixtures thereof. The process may be carried out as a continuous or batch reaction process.

Alkylene glycol production using carbon catalysts

An MTBE recycle stream (which consists mainly of TBA and methanol) contaminated with residual amounts of tertiary butyl hydroperoxide, ditertiary butyl peroxide and allyl tertiary butyl peroxide can be effectively catalytically treated under mild conversion conditions with a silica-supported nickel, copper, chromium, iron catalyst in order to substantially completely decompose the peroxide contaminants and to thereby provide a treated MTBE recycle stream which is not only substantially free from contaminating quantities of such peroxides, but which also contains an enhanced amount of methyl tertiary butyl ether.
