The present invention is a method and apparatus for providing a control system that controls at least one of a plurality of display units. In one embodiment, the control system includes a remote control circuit capable of activating a remote signal for moving the display unit between one of a first, a second and a third positions and another one of the first, the second and the third positions. The control system further includes a local display unit movement control circuit coupled to the display unit, and a transmitter coupled to the local display unit movement control circuit. The transmitter is configured to transmit a light beam capable of being reflected from a reflective surface near the transmitter to make a reflected light beam, and a receiver coupled to the local display unit movement control circuit. The receiver provides a signal to the local display unit control circuit upon detection of the reflected light beam to move the display unit between one of the first, the second and the third positions and another one of the first, the second and the third positions. Various embodiments are described.

Method and apparatus for providing a monitor deployment

An apparatus is described which includes a frame, a video monitor display mounted to the frame, a torque shaft coupled to the frame such that rotation of the torque shaft causes the frame to pivot along a predetermined arc. The apparatus further involves engaging to the torque shaft to impart rotational motion to the torque shaft, a releasable cam follower slidably disposed on the cam shaft and a spring mounted on the cam shaft exerting a spring bias force directed toward the cam so as to cause rotational motion of the cam.

Spring cam mechanism for stowing a monitor

An in-flight entertainment system includes several liquid crystal display (LCD) retract units mountable in a passenger service unit of aircraft. Each of the LCD retract units includes an input connector and an output connector arranged such that signals provided to the input connector appear at the output connector. A system control unit (SCU) is also provided. The SCU is configurable to provide video, power and control signals independently to the input connector of each of the LCD retract units and is also configurable to provide video, power and control signals to the input connector of only a first of the LCD retract units. In the second configuration, the input and output connectors of successive LCD retract units are connected in a daisy chain fashion such that the same signals are provided to each of the LCD retract units. In another aspect of the present invention, each of the plurality of LCD retract units includes status communications bus electronics such as RS-485.

Interface for liquid crystal display retract device

The present invention is a method and apparatus for providing a vehicle entertainment control system that controls a plurality of display units. The vehicle entertainment control system includes a remote override control circuit capable of activating a remote signal for moving at least one of the plurality of display units between a first position and a second position. In addition, the vehicle entertainment control system includes a local display unit movement control circuit coupled to one of the plurality of display units. The local display unit movement control circuit includes a photodiode coupled to said local display unit movement control circuit, the photodiode transmits a light beam capable of being reflected from a reflective surface near the photodiode to make a reflected light beam, and a photodetector coupled to the local display unit movement control circuit, the photodetector providing a signal to the local display unit control circuit upon detection of said reflected light beam to move the one of the display units between the first position and the second position.

Method and apparatus for providing a vehicle entertainment control

A latch is disclosed for securing a television monitor for an aircraft video system in a horizontal position, wherein the monitor is rotatable between the horizontal position and a downward position suitable for passenger viewing. The latch includes a solenoid having a hinged element. The hinged element may be rotated to a closed position wherein the hinged element is in a vertical orientation. The hinged element may also be rotated to an open position wherein the hinged element is rotated away from the vertical orientation. Further, the hinged element includes a cutout having a reverse L-shaped configuration and a first mating surface. In addition, a notch is formed in a bezel for the monitor. The notch includes a second mating surface wherein when the hinged element is in the open position and the monitor is in the horizontal position, the second mating surface rests upon the first mating surface thereby securing the monitor in the horizontal position. Further, a noise reducing material is affixed to the hinged dement to reduce the amount of noise generated during operation of the solenoid.

Latch for securing an aircraft video device

A connector module for terminating a video signal for a monitor in an aircraft entertainment system is disclosed. The module includes a switch having a post that is movable between an extended position for terminating the video signal and a retracted position for enabling transmittance of the video signal through an output connector for the monitor. In addition, the module includes a lever rotatably attached adjacent to the output connector. The lever is rotatable to a terminating position wherein the lever is adjacent to the post to enable positioning of the post in the extended position. Further, upon attachment of the video cable to the output connector, the video cable contacts the lever to cause rotation of the lever against the post to move the post to the retracted position.

Apparatus for automatically terminating a signal

A screen assembly that includes a screen material which is bonded to a thin metal substrate. The substrate is typically a solid 1/16 inch thick sheet of aluminum that is both light weight and strong. The bonded screen/substrate subassembly is mounted to an flip panel frame which is pivotally connected to an outer frame. To increase the rigidity of the substrate, the edges of the screen subassembly are located within a channel of the flip panel frame and held in place by a flexible foam cord that is pressed between the subassembly and the frame. The outer frame is pivotally connected to a stationary frame that is mounted to a structure, such as the wall of an aircraft passenger compartment. To display images on the screen, the outer frame is rotated away from the wall and the flip panel frame is flipped around to expose the screen to the passenger compartment.

Flip screen assembly

A screen for an aircraft video projection system. The screen includes a frame for attachment to an aircraft cabin surface and cylindrically shaped first and second pulleys rotatably mounted to the frame. In addition, the first and second pulleys are oriented substantially parallel relative to each other and the first pulley includes an interior hollow. The screen further includes a belt having a viewing surface and an indexing hole adjacent to the viewing surface. The belt is positioned in contact around the first and second pulleys and is moveable between a viewing position in which the viewing surface is exposed for display of the projected image and a stored position in which the viewing surface is hidden. The belt also serves as a heat absorbing layer. A light sensor is positioned opposite the belt. The light sensor serves to detect the presence of the indexing hole. In particular, if the indexing hole is positioned opposite the sensor, the sensor indicates that the viewing surface is exposed. Further, if the indexing hole is not positioned opposite the indexing hole, the sensor indicates that the viewing surface is hidden. In addition, the screen includes a gearmotor affixed within the hollow. The gearmotor serves to rotate the first pulley to move the belt to the viewing position upon detection that the viewing surface is hidden, wherein the gearmotor is affixed within the hollow.

Automatic video projection screen

A display unit that rotates a video monitor between a stowing cavity and an exposed position so that viewers can see the monitor. The monitor is attached to a frame which is typically mounted into the ceiling of the passenger cabin of an airplane. Also attached to the frame is an electric motor that rotates the monitor into the stowed and exposed positions. Attached to the output shaft of the electric motor is a slip clutch that allows the monitor to rotate up from the exposed position when a predetermined force is applied to the viewing device. A spring is operatively connected to the monitor and electric motor, that pulls the monitor up into the stowed position if the electric motor becomes disabled. An electric brake is also attached to the output shaft of the electric motor to hold the monitor in the exposed position.
