The invention features bone screws having a threaded screw body and a screw head attached to one end of the screw body, the bone screw further including: a) an interior channel extending longitudinally through the screw head and through at least a portion of the screw body, wherein the interior channel has a width of less than 5.0 millimeters; and b) a plurality of radially-disposed delivery channels connecting the interior channel to the exterior of the screw body, each delivery channel having exterior openings. The invention further features devices that include a bone screw and a delivery manifold detachably attached to the screw head of the bone screw. In addition, the invention features methods of treating a patient having a bone defect by using a bone screw described herein.

Bone screws and methods of use thereof

A minimally invasive reaming assembly for creating an entry portal into the canal of a bone and for providing a working channel in which to ream the canal of a bone. The assembly includes a sleeve, a housing and an inner reamer. The sleeve is an elongated cylindrically-shaped hollow sleeve that has a proximal and a distal end, with the distal end having a plurality of cutting blades. The housing is attached to the sleeve and is generally cylindrical in shape and it has a top portion, a bottom portion and a through bore. The top portion includes a releasable locking mechanism for engaging the inner reamer within the housing. The inner reamer has an elongated cannulated body and proximal and distal ends. The distal end has a rotatable reaming head and the proximal end has a drill shaft and a connector for connection to a drill. A portion of the body includes an annular collar with a tab for engaging a notch in the housing. The reamer is sized and shaped for insertion through the bore of the housing and the sleeve. The reaming assembly is configured to create an entry portal into the canal of a bone and to provide a working channel in which a plurality of reamers of graduated sizes are inserted for progressively reaming the canal of a bone.

Minimally invasive intramedullary nail insertion instruments and method

An attachment tool for attaching a drill guide to a medical implant such as an intramedullary nail including a first end and a housing. The first end includes a first opening that allows a fastener to pass through and thread into the implant thus attaching the tool. The housing includes a second opening whose longitudinal axis is preferably offset from the longitudinal axis of the first opening. The housing also includes a guide surface with a grove for directing a driving tool to the second opening. The driving tool is inserted through the second opening to drive the fastener. The driving tool can be inserted and removed during the procedure. In one embodiment, the fastener is cannulated to afford a surgeon access to the interior of the implant. The housing also includes a plurality of holes that can be used as drill guide holes or to attach separate drill guides or other orthopedic devices.

Attachment tool for drill guide

An intramedullary nail apparatus includes an elongated nail body having a longer section and a shorter section. A detachable connection affixes the larger and shorter sections together end to end, using a taper lock connection, for example. The shorter section can provide transverse openings therethrough for enabling one or more fasteners to attach it to bone tissue, depending upon the medical indication. The nail includes a bow that consists of two tangent radii. This bow allows for the anterior bow of the femur and the relative straightness of the tibia. Thus, the apparatus of the present invention enables the same stems to be used in the treatment of femoral and tibial fractures. A stem is selected for any indication based on the desired diameter and length. The bow allows for a simplified surgical technique and a reduction in inventory of the nail system.

Intramedullary nail hybrid bow

A bone screw apparatus and method of implantation provides a bone screw having an elongated shaft of an oversized length with proximal and distal end portions. The distal end portion of the shaft has a cutting head. The proximal end portion of the shaft is sized and shaped to accept a driver tool, such as a drill chuck. The shaft is externally threaded along a majority of its length. A pair of opposed longitudinally extending circumferentially spaced flat surfaces are provided along the shaft. A removable head with a central opening enables the head to slide along the shaft proximally to distally. A ratcheting mechanism prevents movement of the head along the shaft in but one direction. A central opening of the head is shaped to conform to the shaped surfaces of the shaft, so that the head and shaft can be rotated as a unit by engaging and rotating the head. The tool receptive surface portion of the head includes intersecting external surfaces of the head spaced radially away from the shaft during use.

Orthopaedic done screw apparatus

A modular intramedullary nail which, selectively, includes two or three connectable sections that are connectable end to end. In the two section nail the second section is an elongated curved nail component having an elongated, open-ended longitudinal bore, and terminating in a distal end. The three section nail includes an upper proximal nail component having an open-ended bore. The second section is a central nail section that is an elongated curved nail component having an open ended longitudinal bore. The third section is a lower distal nail component having an elongated open ended longitudinal bore. The nail components are connected at the end using corresponding conical socket and conical projecting end portions of adjoining end nail components that can be fitted together and secured upon impact. Upon assembly, the connections are self orienting, providing corresponding tooled 'flat' portions adjacent the respective conical socket and conical projecting end portions of the nail components. This interlocking tooled flats align and abut upon assembly so that the adjoining nail components only align in one relative rotational position. The assembled nail thus provides an elongated continuous open ended bore that receives a cannulated fastener. In the three section nail, the fastener extends the full length of the longitudinal bore of the assembled three nail sections. In the two section nail, the fastener extends into the distal end. An upper enlarged head portion of the cannulated fastener grips the proximal nail component. The distal end portion of the cannulated fastener has external threads which engage corresponding internal threads within the bore of the distal nail component.

Cannulated modular intramedullary nail

A device that holds a personal communication device in an manner such that it can have the alpha numeric display easily read by positioning the display in the line of site of pager attendant. An angular planar surface allows the pager to be clipped on so the pager will not fall if bumped, and will hold stationary while the attendant actuates the function buttons on the pager, which can be quickly done with only one hand. The plurality of rigid surfaces will easily hold a personal communication device in other positions, but also provides a dedicated easy-to-find location of a plurality of personal communication device.

Apparatus for storage and display of personal communication devices

A surgical guide rod holder is provided for holding guide rods, surgical pins, bone pins, trochars and the like during orthopedic surgery procedures. The apparatus has a frame with a handle and a barrel. The barrel has two spaced apart supports that hold the pin or rod. A multi-link assembly is operated by a trigger. The multi-link assembly moves between gripping and releasing positions when the surgeon rotates the trigger. The multi-link assembly includes a link member that presses laterally against the pin or rod during gripping, forcing the pin against the barrel. A turnbuckle adjusts the multi-link assembly to provide greater/lesser 'bite' for holding the rod or pin, or for allowing holding of pins of different sizes.

An intramedullary femoral rod provides a hollow rod body with five openings including a first group of three openings and a second group of two openings spaced at 180.degree. from the first opening. The five openings define three passageways including two upwardly oblique passageways for femoral repairs or one downwardly oblique passageway for recon repairs.
