Disclosed is an ungelled acrylic resin composition containing an acrylic polymer having in a molecule thereof at least one group containing a silicon atom selected from: ##STR1## each R independently is selected from the group of moieties consisting of Y, hydrogen, a C.sub.1 -C.sub.10 group joined to Si through an Si-C linkage, and OR.sup.7 in which R.sup.7 represents alkykl having at least 4 carbon atoms, aryl, alkylaryl, arylalkyl, aryloxyalkyl, or alkyloxyalkyl, wherein Y represents an easily hydrolyzable group. The acrylic resin composition, contains an amount of easily hydrolyzable Y moieties such that the ratio of the number of grams of the ungelled acrylic resin composition to equivalent of easily hydrolyzable Y moieties in the ungelled acrylic resin composition is in the range of from 40 to 667. Preferred acrylic resin compositions of the invention can be cured in the presence of atmospheric moisture and a suitable catalyst at a temperature of less than or equal to 121 degrees Celsius within 3 hours. Disclosed is a method for producing the ungelled acrylic resin composition. Also disclosed is a nonaqueous composition, particularly a nonaqueous coating composition, containing the ungelled acrylic resin composition. Preferred coating compositions containing an ungelled acrylic resin composition can be cured in the presence of atmospheric moisture and a suitable catalyst at a temperature of less than or equal to 121 degrees C. within 3 hours.

Method of preparing acrylic polymers containing hydrolyzable moieties

Disclosed is an ungelled acrylic resin composition containing an acrylic polymer having in a molecule thereof at least one group containing a silicon atom selected from: ##STR1## wherein each R independently is selected from the group of moieties consisting of Y, hydrogen, a C.sub.1 -C.sub.10 group joined to Si through an Si--C linkage, and OR.sup.7 in which R.sup.7 represents alkyl having at least 4 carbon atoms, aryl, alkylaryl, arylaklyl, aryloxyalkyl, or alkyloxyalkyl, wherein Y represents an easily hydrolyzable group. Substrates coated with nonaqueous compositions comprising acrylic

Disclosed are essentially zinc-free, organic coating compositions based on silicon-containing polyols comprising reaction products of hydrophobic polyols, organosilicon-containing materials, and higher monohydric alcohols, R-OH. The organosilicon-containing material comprises an organosilicon-containing substance free of certain functional groups attached directly to carbon and essentially free of alkali metal ions. The organosilicon-containing substance has atoms bonded directly to Si all of which are selected from O, N, and/or Cl. The organosilicon-containing substance also has moieties directly bonded to Si which are displaceable by reaction with water and/or alcohol. The reaction product is not capable of being gelled when subjected to a specific gel test, has a content of hydroxyl groups from the hydrophobic polyol ranging from 0.4 to 10 milliequivalents per gram of reaction product, has a content of groups, --OR, from the higher monofunctional alcohol ranging from 0.1 to 7 milliequivalents per gram of reaction product, and a content of the moieties directly bonded to Si which are displaceable of less than 1 milliequivalent per gram of reaction product. The organic coating composition also contains a curing agent for for the silicon-containing polyol selected from the group consisting of an aminoplast, a phenoplast, an isocyanate, a blocked isocyanate, a semi-blocked isocyanate, a lower-alkoxy-containing silane, and a hydrolyzed lower- alkoxy-containing silane. The coating composition is essentially free of elemental zinc and cures to an essentially organic coating.

There are disclosed herein lactone-polyester polyols which are derived from lactones, resinous polyols thereof, and coating compositions formulated therewith. The polyester polyols are typically prepared by reacting a large excess of low molecular weight polyols with lactones or functional equivalents thereof. The polyols are employed in amounts sufficient to produce reaction products containing a significant amount of unreacted polyols which can be subsequently removed by means such as vacuum distillation.

Disclosed is a resin comprising a reaction product prepared by partially reacting to homogeneity a hydrophobic polyol and an organosilicon-containing material comprising an organosilicon-containing substance. The organosilicon-containing substance has atoms bonded directly to silicon, all of which atoms are selected from oxygen, nitrogen, and/or chlorine, and additionally has moieties directly bonded to silicon which are easily displaceable by reaction with water and/or alcohol. At least a part of the organosilicon-containing substance is hydrolyzed. The reaction product is homogeneous and contains residual hydroxyl moieties from the hydrophobic polyol and residual moieties bonded directly to silicon which are easily displaceable. the reaction product is capable of self-curing, optionally with a catalyst, by reaction with moisture and/or with the residual hydroxyl moieties, of the residual moieties directly bonded to silicon which are easily displaceable.

Disclosed is a liquid composition containing a reaction product prepared by reacting a hydrophobic polyol and an organosilicon-containing material. The organosilicon-containing material comprises an organosilicon-containing substance free of functional groups attached to carbon and essentially free of alkali metal ions, having atoms bonded directly to silicon all of which atoms are selected from O, N, and/or Cl. The organosilicon-containing substance additionally has moieties directly bonded to organosilicon which are displaceable by reaction with water and/or alcohol. The reaction product is not capable of being gelled when subjected to a specific three-step gel test, has a ratio of milliequivalents of residual moieties from the organosilicon-containing material which are displaceable by reaction with water and/or alcohol to milliequivalents of hydroxyl moieties from the polyol greater than 1, and is capable of self-curing to a continuous film in the presence of moisture.

Ungelled reaction products of a condensation product with an amino silane are formed. The products are capable of curing at a low temperature to form durable coatings. Polyols can optionally be blended with the ungelled reaction products to provide useful coating compositions.

Film-forming resins containing alkoxy silane groups

Coating compositions capable of liquid application to substrates consist essentially of a curable film forming polyol-containing component and an organic reactive diluent. The reactive diluent is an organic compound containing a primary or secondary hydroxyl group and further characterized by having a retained solids value of greater than about 80 percent, a hydroxyl equivalent weight of from about 180 to about 800, and a liquid viscosity of less than about 10 poise at 60.degree. C. The coating compositions can be formulated to contain little or no volatile organic solvent and/or water.

Coating compositions based on polyol-containing film forming components

Low organic solvent-containing coating compositions are prepared by blending (i) an ester-containing polyol, having a number average molecular weight of from about 140 to about 700, a hydroxyl value of from about 160 to about 1100 and a viscosity of less than about 1200 poises, which is derived from an aromatic or alicyclic monobasic acid and, optionally, a minor proportion of a polybasic acid and a polyol having an average hydroxyl functionality of from about 2.1 to about 5.0 with (ii) an aminealdehyde crosslinking agent. Particularly valuable coating compositions which can be cured at relatively low temperatures are obtained by incorporating a cure accelerating catalyst into the composition. The compositions aid in environmental pollution control and form films having good adhesion, flexibility, hardness, stain resistance, detergent resistance, solvent resistance and durability.
