A video telemetry system for monitoring the deployment of an apparatus coupled to a satellite body includes a camera that produces a video signal. A video compressor is coupled to the camera and digitally compresses the video signal into a digitally compressed video signal. A modulator is coupled to the compressor for modulating the compressed video signal. An antenna is coupled to the modulator for converting the compressed video signal into an RF video signal and transmitting the RF video signal to a ground station or other means for monitoring the signal, particularly during a deployment.

Video telemetry system for a satellite

A spacecraft traveling in a volume of space receiving radiation from the sun and encountering an undesired force. The spacecraft has a solar panel movably attached to said spacecraft. The spacecraft further includes a solar panel controller which controls the movement of the solar panel, wherein the controller moves the solar panel in a time modulated manner so that a torque is generated which compensates for the undesired force.

Optimal solar tracking system

A propellant immobilizing system and method in which propellant motion in the propellant storage tanks (22) is reduced or eliminated during velocity change maneuvers to reduce disturbance torques acting upon the spacecraft (10) and improving the spacecraft attitude pointing performance. The thrusters (14, 16, 18 or 20) are fired to produce a small impulse in the direction of the desired Velocity change to begin motion of the propellant within the fuel tank in the opposite direction. After the fuel has moved within the tank to a location in which the propellant center of mass is aligned with the propellant tank (22) center of curvature in the direction of the desired velocity change, thrusters (14, 16, 18 or 20) are again fired to produce a force in the direction of the current velocity of the propellant center of mass to stop the propellant center of mass relative to the propellant tank (22). With the center mass of the propellant now aligned with the propellant tank center of curvature in the direction of the desired velocity change, the thrusters (14, 16, 18 or 20) are again fired to produce the desired velocity change with the propellant center of mass now being trapped in the propellant tank such that additional motion of the propellant is inhibited. After completion of the maneuver, the propellant gradually migrates back to its original position due to the influence of a propellant management device within the propellant tank.

Propellant immobilizing system and method

Apparatus for use in gyroscopically ejecting a spacecraft supported in the open end of a spacecraft supporting cradle. The invention comprises a separable ejection restraint mechanism attached between the cradle and the spacecraft. The mechanism restrains the thrust force applied to the spacecraft for a predetermined time period in order to dissipate undetermined forces acting upon the spacecraft prior to the ejection thereof. The mechanism comprises a separable resilient portion and a releasable clamp portion coupled thereto. The resilient portion comprises a spring loaded anchor rod arrangement while the releasable clamp portion comprises a spring loaded split ball clamp arrangement. The invention also contemplates the use of a flexible carrier coupled between the spacecraft and the cradle. The invention acts as a tether connected between the cradle and spacecraft which acts to establish a determinant state of force on the cargo and eliminate unwanted ejection-related problems prior to cargo deployment. In addition, the release of a single tether employed as the sole cargo release initiator minimizes the possible imparting of uncontrolled momentum to the cargo due to structural deformation energy.
