A glass melting furnace has a gas inlet positioned proximate to a charging section oxy-fuel combustion region to introduce gas into the region and to at least partially displace gas having a partial pressure of alkali vapor from the region, and optionally a gas outlet is adapted to provide an exit for a volume of furnace atmosphere. A method for reducing alkali vapor corrosion of glass furnace refractory structures includes providing a gas inlet proximate to the oxy-fuel combustion region; introducing a volume of gas from the inlet into the region, displacing a volume of gas having a partial pressure of alkali vapor from the region; and, optionally providing a gas outlet adapted to provide an exit for a volume of furnace atmosphere.

Gas injection for glass melting furnace to reduce refractory degradation

A method for melting glass forming batch material includes charging the glass forming batch material to a glass melting apparatus; impinging a flame proximate to the surface of the batch materials to form a glass melt from the batch material; and bubbling the glass melt in proximity to the impinging flame with a fluid, advantageously producing a shearing action sufficient to enhance the solution rate of the glass forming batch material relative to the same system without bubbling, but without splashing glass and without significant production of seeds or blisters in the glass melt. Melting of the glass forming batch material with bubbling proceeds more quickly, and/or at lower temperatures than occurs in a comparable conventional glass melting furnace.

Rapid glass melting or premelting

In an industrial glass furnace which contains recuperators, regenerators, electric boost or other devices for providing heat to glass batch material an oxy-fuel burner mounted in the roof of the furnace provides additional heat to melt the batch material. A method of mounting and using such a roof-mounted oxy-fuel burner including the operating parameters to maximize heat transfer while minimizing the disturbance of the batch material is disclosed.

Method of boosting a glass melting furnace using a roof mounted oxygen-fuel burner

In an industrial glass furnace, which optionally contains recuperators, regenerators, electric boost or other devices for providing heat to glass batch material, at least one staged combustion oxy-fuel burner is mounted in the roof of the furnace to provide heat to melt the glass batch material by providing a flow of fuel to the oxy-fuel burner; providing a flow of gaseous oxidant in association with said the oxy-fuel burner; injecting the fuel and the oxidant into the furnace; and, combusting the fuel such that at least a portion of combustion is effected in the vicinity of said glass forming material to enhance convective and radiative transfer of heat to said glass forming material without substantially disturbing the glass forming material. In one embodiment, the oxy-fuel burner is adapted for injecting liquid fuels. In another embodiment, the oxy-fuel burner is adapted for fuel staged combustion and contains at least one outer oxidant injector and two inner fuel injectors, the innermost fuel injector being adapted for high velocity fuel injection and the other fuel injector, disposed between the innermost fuel injector and the outer oxidant injector, being adapted for lower velocity fuel injection.

Method of heating a glass melting furnace using a roof mounted, staged combustion oxygen-fuel burner

A process for installing a refractory burner block in a glass furnace crown, wherein the glass furnace crown comprises a second refractory material different than the burner block refractory, includes installing a refractory crown block in the furnace crown, wherein the crown block refractory is compatible with the burner block refractory and the second refractory material, wherein the crown block is provided with a hole for accepting the burner block; and disposing the burner block into the crown block hole in sealing engagement therewith. A process for installing a refractory burner block in a hot glass furnace crown, wherein the glass furnace crown comprises a second refractory material different than the burner block refractory, includes removing crown insulation from the exterior of the furnace crown; inserting a patch of refractory material compatible with the furnace crown second refractory material into the crown in the vicinity of the removed insulation; drilling a hole into the crown through the refractory patch, optionally with a water cooled diamond drill; and, inserting the refractory burner block into the hole in the furnace crown through the refractory patch. A process for installing a refractory burner block in a glass furnace crown, wherein the glass furnace crown comprises a highly thermally conductive fused cast refractory material, includes installing an insulating barrier mounting block on the upper surface of the furnace crown, wherein the mounting block is compatible with the burner block refractory and the fused cast refractory material, wherein the mounting block is provided with a hole for accepting the burner block, and wherein the insulating barrier mounting block is prepared when the furnace crown is not hot; and disposing the burner block into the mounting block hole in sealing engagement therewith.

Process of installing roof mounted oxygen-fuel burners in a glass melting furnace

Briefly, according to the present invention there is provided a refractory lined glass melter for producing refined glass from raw glass-forming material using at least one oxygen-fuel burner recessed within a burner block mounted in the roof of the furnace and a process of using the burner. The velocities of the gaseous fuel and of the oxygen from the oxygen-fuel burner are controlled such that the velocities of the gaseous fuel and the oxygen are substantially equivalent to provide a generally laminar gaseous fuel and oxygen flow to combust proximate a top surface of the raw glass-forming material and produce a flame which impinges the surface of the raw glass-forming material and which has a middle portion of a columnar shape.

Roof-mounted oxygen-fuel burner for a glass melting furnace and process of using the oxygen-fuel burner

A device to measure round objects, especially threaded objects is shown where three cam surfaces located on the interior of an annular ring are contacted by rollers which are advanced or retracted as a cam surface is traversed. The traverse of the cam surface allows change in diameter formed by the rollers and by locking the cam position, a fixed gauge is formed. The rollers directly contact the part to be measured. As applied to thread measurement, the three point gauge uses annular rollers to measure properties of thread fit and use when the rollers have the threads slightly offset from each other to make a pitch test set. The device allows a single gauge to handle at least 12 normal go and no-go gauging functions with just change of rollers for various fit and pitch classes. The gauge also is settable at special sizes near a standard size due to a range of adjustment.

A combustion method wherein oxidant and fuel are provided into a charged furnace in a substantially stoichiometric ratio for relatively complete combustion and secondary oxidant is provided in a defined manner outside the furnace for further combustion without excessive NO.sub.x or carbon monoxide formation.
