Free radical polymerisation process

A polyphenol compound wherein the aromatic rings are linked by direct bonds or by a divalent link in the ortho position relative to the --OH group and the end aromatic rings contain either oximino substituents or substituted alkylaminomethyl substituents in the ortho position. The compound can be coated onto a metal surface to give improved corrosion resistance. The metal surface can be zinc-coated steel or zinc phosphated steel. The polyphenol compound can be the only coating material or can be incorporated into a surface coating composition such as a paint.

Polyphenol compounds and their use in lubricants and coatings

A composition comprising at least one compound which is a 2,6-bis hydroxyalkylamino methyl phenol. The composition is typically water-based and certain of the compounds are novel. The composition or the compound may be deposited onto a metal surface. The coated metal surface can have corrosion inhibiting and/or adhesion promoting characteristics.

Composition and method

A fused ring compound having hydroxy, carboxylic acid and hydroxyalkyl substituent groups and the metal salts or complexes thereof. The hydroxyalkyl group is especially a hydroxymethyl group. The compound is prepared by reaction of the hydroxy carboxylic acid derivative with formaldehyde in an alkaline medium at a temperature of not more than 50.degree. C. The compounds, especially the metal salts or complexes thereof, can be used to provide corrosion inhibition of metals, for example iron.

Compound, preparation and use

A compound contains a ligand group and at least one group of the general formula --XR.sub.n where X is a linking group which contains at least one hetero-atom, R is a saturated hydrocarbyl group containing at least six carbon atoms or is an unsaturated hydrocarbyl group containing at least three carbon atoms. The ligand group can be a polyhydroxyhydrocarbyl, a triazole, an imidazole, an indazole, a thiazole, an oxazole, a carbamate, an xanthate or a phthalazine. The compounds can be used to improve bonding between a metal and a coating material in contact with the metal surface. The metal may be a tire cord and the coating material rubber or a rubber composition.

Triazole/thiazole amino-s-triazine bonding agents

A tetraoximino derivative of a bisphenol, for example the 3,5,3.sup.1,5.sup.1 -tetraoximino methyl derivative of 2,2-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl) propane, can be coated onto a metal surface to give improved corrosion resistance. The metal surface can be zinc coated steel or zinc phosphated steel. The tetraoximino derivative can be the only coating material or can be incorporated into a surface coating composition such as paint.

Oxime compound, preparation and use for coating and lubricating metals

A compound containing a ligand group and a group of the general formula --NRCOR.sup.1.sub.a X.sub.b CR.sup.2 .dbd.CHCOR.sup.3 is used for treatment of a metal. The ligand group can be a triazole, an imidazole, an indazole, a thiazole, an oxazole, a carbamate, an xanthate or a phthalazine, or derivatives thereof. The compounds can be coated onto a metal surface, for example a copper surface. The metal surface may also be coated, simultaneously or subsequently, with a surface coating composition such as a paint or lacquer or an adhesive. When used with an adhesive, an increase in the adhesive strength is achieved.

Process for disperse azo dyes having a cyano radical ortho to the azo group by reacting the corresponding halogeno dye with a covalent non-metallic nitrile in the presence of a copper catalyst and an acid acceptor. Previous processes have used a metal cyanide as the cyanide source. The present process does, however, contemplate the use of a non-metallic nitrile, even in small amounts, in combination with a metal cyanide for which advantages are to be gained in terms of reduced copper usage. The non-metallic nitrile is preferably a cyanohydrin which may be prepared in situ by reacting an aldehyde or ketone with a metal cyanide. The metal cyanide may itself provide the copper catalyst.
