Disclosed are deactivatable RFID labels and tags in individual and web form, and methods of making same. When it is desired to deactivate the label or tag, the tag or label is subjected to tearing. One arrangement involves providing the label or tag with a tear strip by which the RFID transponder in the label or tag is destroyed, and in another arrangement a tag can be torn along a weakening line to destroy the RFID transponder.

Deactivatable RFID labels and tags and methods of making same

Various embodiments of an ink roller assembly include a capillary ink metering unit and a surrounding porous ink retaining sleeve, wherein the unit is comprised of a pair of capillary sections connected to each other and wherein capillary sections include a hollow shaft and discs with intervening ink capillary chambers interconnected by passages. In another embodiment, a capillary ink metering unit includes discs on a solid shaft, wherein there are passages interconnecting capillary chambers. In yet other embodiments, separate sections are provided to enable inks of different colors, viscosities and/or types to be applied to printing members. There is also provision to meter ink to printing members having different faces or areas in accordance with or as function of the sizes of those areas. The ink roller assembly with separate sections can carry both visible ink and visually alterable ink for coding purposes.

Ink roller assembly having a plurality of sections each having a porous sleeve

There is disclosed a package containing a series of side-by-side label rolls and an ink roll package positioned in a tubular opening in the label rolls and having a flange against the side of the endmost roll. The flange provides a stop to limit migration or insertion of the ink roll package into the opening. The flange provides a surface to which a cover sheet or label can be releasably attached. The cover sheet can carry a substantial amount of information and is peelable to release the ink rolls.

There is disclosed a release-coated linerless label web which includes a cleaner and a printable portion. The web can be threaded into contact with a thermal print head and the cleaner can clean the print head and thereafter the web is advanced to printed on a series of labels. The cleaner can be comprised in one embodiment of a plurality of lines of perforation cuts which roughen the surface of the web sufficiently to clean the print head upon many contact of the web with the print head. In another embodiment the cleaner is provided by embossments. In yet another embodiment the cleaner is provided by straining the web. Methods of making and using the web are also disclosed.

Ink roller assembly

An ink applying sleeve of resilient micro-porous ink retaining material is confined between a pair of circular flanges mounted on a connecting support hub. A cylindrical ink retaining unit is also mounted on the center hub and is confined between the flanges to support the sleeve. The unit includes a stack of thin plastic discs which define concentric annular ink retaining capillary passages or chambers for receiving a supply of ink. The concentric chambers are interconnected by a series of radially extending passages which control the outward radial flow of ink from the concentric chambers into the micro-porous sleeve. In one form, the thin plastic discs are heat-formed from thin sheet plastics material and have a center hole for receiving the support hub.

Method of making an ink roller assembly with capillary ink supply

A rigid plastic tube supports an ink applying sleeve of resilient micro-porous ink retaining material, and a pair of end journal and closure members are pressed into opposite ends of the tube. An ink retaining unit confined within the support tube between the end closure members and includes axially spaced thin plastic discs which define therebetween ink retaining capillary chambers for receiving a supply of ink. A series of axially spaced holes are formed in the support tube and control the outward radial flow of ink from the capillary chambers into the micro-porous sleeve. In one form, the thin plastic discs are separately formed of molded and include axially projecting hub portions which interfit and provide for pressing a stack of the discs together to form the ink retaining unit.
