A granular flux suitable for submerged arc electric welding comprising particles of composite fluxing ingredients of the agglomerated or fused type combined with a halogenated polymer as a reducing agent for diffusible hydrogen in the resulting weld metal and a method of making this granular flux wherein the polymer is mixed with the flux particles and then heated to a temperature above the melting temperature of the polymer and below the vaporization temperature of the polymer.

Submerged arc flux and method of making same

A consumable welding element for arc welding comprising a steel sheath surrounding a compacted core containing metal alloying powders and an essentially 100% basic compound in an amount less than about 1.60% of the total weight of said element. The basic compound is calcium fluoride powder which is preferably in the range of about 0.1% to about 0.9% calcium fluoride powder by total weight of the element. As another feature the core of the element contains a specific agent for decreasing the amount of diffusible hydrogen in the weld metal. This new element may be a filler metal for TIG welding; however, it is preferably a consumable electrode for MIG welding.

Basic metal cored electrode

In a consumable welding element for depositing a weld metal bead onto a steel workpiece with the diffusible hydrogen in the weld metal being less than 2.0 ppm, the oxygen of the weld metal being less than 0.040% by weight and the yield strength of the weld metal being greater than about 85,000 psi, there is provided an improvement wherein the weld metal is a steel alloy including, as a percentage by weight of the weld metal, 0.03-0.09% carbon, 2.5-4.0% manganese, 0.01-0.05% titanium, silicon less than about 1.0%, nickel less than about 2.0%, and oxygen less than about 0.035%.

Low hydrogen basic metal cored electrode

A flux cored welding electrode for use in electric arc welding with a shielded gas, which electrode includes a tube of low carbon steel having on the inside thereof a titanium dioxide based flux with fluxing ingredients including aluminum oxide in the amount of 0.1 to 0.5% of the total weight of the electrode. The improvement of the invention wherein the titanium dioxide based flux with aluminum oxide free of magnesium or compounds of magnesium.

Gas shielded, flux cored, welding electrode

A cored type welding electrode which enables good penetration, has an improved range of welding voltages, produces low smoke and provides a weld deposit having good impact properties. The flux contains larger than normal quantities of basic oxides, controlled maximum amounts of acidic or amphoteric oxides and deoxidizers, and a very carefully controlled maximum and minimum amount of combined fluorine in the form of a fluoride.

Cored type welding electrode

A cored type arc-welding steel electrode for the welding of 14 gauge to 3/8 inch thick mild steel wherein the ingredients in the core provide a smooth spray arc that is easy to control along with excellent bead appearance, low spatter, and good slag removal. The core ingredients include: calcium oxide, as a necessary compound, in a prefused mix to lower its hygroscopicity; aluminum and magnesium in controlled amounts; and selected fluorides.
