A blade sharpening and blade sharpness detection system for permitting blade sharpening and a determination of blade sharpness without mechanical contact with the blade cutting edge. An optical inspection unit inspects blade sharpness optically, and a blade positioning and guidance mechanism positions and guides the blade in relation to the optical inspection unit. An output display provides visual output of blade sharpness. The optical inspection unit, which can be a reflective optical sensor, and the blade positioning and guidance mechanism are retained by a pivotable support structure. The positioning and guidance mechanism can comprise first and second pairs of rotatable spheres, each such pair disposed in immediate juxtaposition to act as rolling supports for the blade. The entry of ambient light into the sharpness sensing volume can be prevented by resiliently deflectable light-blocking bodies retained to first and second sides of a sharpness inspection slot within the housing.

Systems for blade sharpening and contactless blade sharpness detection

A blade sharpness detection system for determining a sharpness of a blade without mechanical contact with the cutting edge of the blade. An optical inspection unit is operative to inspect blade sharpness optically, and a blade positioning and guidance mechanism is disposed to position and guide the blade in relation to the optical inspection unit. A dual polarization radar system is calibrated based on real-time data measurements, such as measured horizontal and vertical reflectivities, Zand Z. In this regard, the radar system analyzes the reflected power measurements to identify which measurements are associated with reflections from a respective spherical object. Using such measurements, the system determines a system differential reflectivity value, and combines such value with reflected power measurements for calibration. Since the calibration is based on real-time data measurements, the calibration process may run simultaneously with the collection of weather data. Further, the calibration process is immune to the weather events within range of the radar system. Accordingly, it is possible for the calibration to be performed at any time and without interfering with the weather monitoring activities regardless of the types of weather events occurring within the vicinity of the radar system.

A procedure state descriptor system for generating state reports of the progress of the invocation process for procedures executed on a digital data processing system is disclosed. The procedure state descriptor system includes a procedure descriptor generator process that generates a procedure descriptor for each procedure. Each procedure descriptor contains a number of offset values that are offset addresses from the start of the procedure to locations in the procedure that are the demarcations between states of the invocation process for the procedure. When a particular procedure is invoked for execution, a procedure state analyzation process accesses the procedure descriptor offset values for the procedure, the memory address of the start of the procedure, and the address of the next instruction to be executed in the procedure. The procedure state analyzation process then determines the difference between the address of the instruction to be next executed and the starting address of the procedure. The difference between the two addresses is compared to the offset values to determine the state of the invocation process for the procedure. As the result of selected state determinations, the procedure state analyzation process also may review the next instruction to be executed by the invoked procedure. The instruction is reviewed to determine if it is a specific type of instruction indicating that the procedure was in still another invocation state.

Procedure state descriptor system for digital data processors

A real-time, concurrent garbage collection system and method uses the virtual-memory page protection mechanisms of a standard computer system to collect used storage space in a heap. The heap is divided into old-space and new-space portions, each of which is further divided into a multiplicity of pages. At least one mutator thread modifies and adds objects to new-space. Two garbage collection process threads are used: a fault processing thread, and a concurrent scanning thread, both of which help to collect the accessible objects in old-space. The garbage collector initially copies only the root objects, or a portion of the root objects, to new-space. In addition, all pages of new-space which contain copies of old-space objects are initially marked as being protected. Whenever the mutator tries to access an object in a protected page, a page-access trap is generated. The fault processing thread of the garbage collector responds to the trap by scanning the objects in the referenced page, copying old-space object and forwarding pointers as necessary. Then it unprotects the page and resumes the mutator at the faulting instruction. The concurrent scanning thread of the garbage collector executes concurrently with the mutator, scanning the protected pages in new-space and unprotecting them as each is scanned. The two collection threads together provide an efficient, medium-grained synchronization between the collector and the mutator.
