A portable transceiver for locking and locating an automobile, includes a remote keyless entry system for locking the automobile; a locating device determining a location of the transceiver, wherein the remote keyless entry system and the locating device are housed in a pocket sized housing; and a processor deriving directional information from a current location to a waypoint, wherein in response to an activation of the remote keyless entry system, the locating device determines the waypoint corresponding substantially to that of the automobile.

A remote programmer for remotely programming a vehicle control system is provided. The remote programmer includes a display, an input for receiving user input data, a first interface for interfacing with a computer, wherein the first interface receives data associated with programming the vehicle control system from the computer; a transmitter for wirelessly transmitting the data associated with programming the vehicle control system to the vehicle control system; and a controller for controlling operations of the remote programmer, wherein the controller stores the data associated with programming the vehicle control system and controls operations of the first interface and the transmitter in accordance with the user input data.

A system for controlling engine operation responsive to engine emitted CO presence in a closed space includes a CO sensor carried in a control unit in the vehicle or in the space. Other control units can be used and are associated with a space closure door and a space fan unit. When the sensor unit detects an unacceptable CO level in the space signals including discrete RF signals are generated to effect engine shutdown and to open a space closure door as well as operate a space ventilation fan until a safe CO level in the space is produced at which point second signals are generated to shut the closure door, turn off the ventilation fan and optionally re-enable engine operation.

An upgrade method and apparatus for both remote and key-operated two-step vehicle security systems is disclosed. The upgrade blocks attempts to disarm the alarm circuit when the vehicle is armed and unlocked improperly. The upgrade can be added to existing systems regardless of the polarity of the signals used therein. Improved power-up and remote control features can also be added as a part of the upgrade.

An add-on, or after-market, remote-control vehicle security system expander allows auxiliary remote-control functions to be added to previously-installed remote-control systems. Using complementary remote control functions for multiple actuation encoding permits auxiliary function codes to be transmitted without a change of state in the underlying function.
